Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
It's a great idea, but the potential to box themselves in is there if they look at it is as their only recruiting method. Some college dropouts, along with some people with no athletic background to speak of, have done quite well for themselves in wrestling. I've always thought one of the biggest plusses of football players becoming wrestlers is the credibility factor that can be played up on commentary. I would be surprised if WWE even uses that to their advantage in most cases if this becomes a real thing. Still, it's difficult to find future stars when there's nowhere for people to work and get experience, so I give them credit for thinking outside the box.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
WWE's focus on a legitimate athletic background seems misplaced, considering that they don't really present their product as something serious, or something where the athleticism is played up all that much. It's not the worst idea in the world, but it would resonate a lot more if wrestling was still presented as a fake sport.

Crowdsourcing: The Shield
To follow up on this, what historical lessons can we take from how DX buried The Spirit Squad that would help us predict what they will do here? I think The Shield is a way hotter act, but perhaps the top guys could use the same formula to bring them down a peg.

Crowdsourcing: The Shield
Suggest HHH & Undertaker vs The Shield on a B-show that never draws, so they can be proven as non-factors.

Recommendations for 20 Crockett TV matches to watch
It's not a "TV" match, which is why I didn't recommend it, but the Flair/Morton cage match from the GAB tour (on the WWE Four Horsemen DVD) is a classic.

Recommendations for 20 Crockett TV matches to watch
It's on a WWE DVD (the second Flair collection that WWE released called Nature Boy Ric Flair: The Definitive Collection). It's listed as 8/31/83. The first Flair DVD set has it too, but it's edited there.

Dave Meltzer stuff
Unless I missed something, you were never banned. Pretending to be a different person seems unnecessary.

Would Furnas and Lafon have been better off if . . .
U.S. wrestling promotions stopped caring about tag teams in the 90s. I don't know that there was an ideal place for them in the U.S.

[1990-06-13-NWA-Clash of the Champions IX] Interview: Ric Flair / Ric Flair vs Junkyard Dog / Interview: Rocky King & Sting / Ric Flair and Sting
It's a good comparison, and I do agree that the Lawler approach worked better. Flair had always been able to carry guys who were capable but limited. JYD wasn't even really capable at this point. I think Flair thought he could get a decent match out of him through sheer will, but that was the wrong approach in this case.

My Top 100 Matches of 1991
The 1994 Yearbook has been my favorite so far of any yearbook, but part of that is because I think it's also been the most active in terms of discussion among multiple people. I do think 1991 was a transitional year for the U.S. promotions. Every year was a transitional year for WCW until the NWO got hot, the WWF was oddly dark and Texas went from the USWA to the GWF. Japan and Mexico seemed to be holding steady from 1990 for the most part although I wish 1991 had continued the hot run of El Dandy and El Satanico. But yes, I agree that '91 was easy to get through, even though I took more long breaks than I have for any other set so far. What 1991 has to its advantage is that maybe the high end isn't quite as high end as in other years, but I do think the amount of GOOD is as good as any year. It's one of the most easily digestible yearbooks we have done so far. There are very few long matches also. Matches longer than 30 minutes are rare, and only one match goes over 45. Compare that to 1995, which had two 60 minute draws in January alone, and a couple more throughout the year. 1991 is a minimalist year in terms of wrestling action and angles, so it will be interesting to follow it with 1997, which has an abundance of everything and borders on excessive at times.

[1991-08-10-GWF] Stan Lane & Steve Cox vs Chris Walker & Steve Simpson / Interview: Jim Cornette & Stan Lane
WCW also offered Cornette a similar angle to the Dangerous Alliance as their top heel manager, which he turned down, before they made the same offer to Heyman. He was in demand at the time, but was just really disillusioned with the national wrestling scene.

[1991-12-15-WWA] El Hijo del Santo & Black Shadow Jr vs Fuerza Guerrera & Octagon
Thank you. Knowing these things always helps. That made a huge difference! Just that detail of Shadow throwing the match so he could face Santo and unmask him is a huge thing that makes this awesome. They follow it up with great work like I mentioned before. Santo does an awesome selling performance of this at the beginning, with Fuerza acting as an appropriately sleazy lackey for Shadow, and Octagon (and Perro) now rooting for Santo. Santo comes back and does one of his trademark beautiful dives on Shadow while covered in blood. As great as Santo is, his greatness is known to me and Black Shadow's isn't, so that is what stands out the most for me here. The opportunism, the cheating tactics, the aerial moves and his bumping when Santo goes on the warpath makes this a fantastic match.

[1991-12-29-WCW-Starrcade] Battlebowl
We join in progress. Luger has won the battle royal in ring one, and Sting, Austin, Rude and Steamboat are the final four in ring two. Are three camera angles really necessary when only one ring is being shown? Classic WCW. Rude, Steamboat and Austin fall by the wayside, leaving us with Sting and Luger as the final two, which is a fun stretch. Sting finally eliminates Luger after some great teases. And there you go, 1991.

[1991-12-29-WCW-Starrcade] Sting & Abdullah the Butcher vs Bobby Eaton & Brian Pillman
My favorite match of the night I think best proves the concept behind the Lethal Lottery. Abdullah attacks partner Sting. Brian Pillman runs out and starts attacking Abdullah with his stick until his partner Bobby Eaton comes out to stop him and immediately goes after Sting's leg. They worked so hard to make Sting's leg injury a thing during this time, but Sting just didn't want to sell it. Abdullah uses a pencil as a weapon until Pillman stops him. This crowd loves Pillman vs Abby! WCW should have run that match on TV at some point. Cactus Jack runs in with a stick and accidentally hits Abdullah, and Sting is able to pin Eaton. He and Abdullah advance to Battlebowl. Fun match.
