Bam Bam Bigelow
Lawler and Bigelow had a match on 7/6/94 that made tape in full. It was a good match, but nowhere near the earlier match the two had.

[1991-09-22-WCW-Main Event] Danger Zone
We see the clip again of the Luger/Simmons match at the Omni the previous month to lead into Barry Windham and Ron Simmons as the guests. They are hyping up a Luger/Hughes vs Simmons/Windham tag, locally I presume. I hate how out of sync WCW shows were with each other. No mention of the big angle from SN just the day before. The shows all exist in their own universe, and it's one of the most frustrating things about watching WCW at this point.

[1991-09-22-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Sgt Slaughter
Slaughter admits that he got exactly what he deserved at Summerslam. He admits that he sold his soul to win the WWF title, and that he doesn't expect anyone's forgiveness. But he tearfully states that he wants his country back. That they actually think they can turn a guy like this into a babyface again shows how stupid they think wrestling fans are.

[1991-09-21-TWA-Autumn Armageddon] Terry Funk vs Kevin Sullivan
Woman is out with Sullivan and has dragged the Fallen Angel gimmick out of mothballs. Pretty crazy, all-over-the-building brawl, with Sullivan chasing Funk around with a hammer! He also takes off his wrist tape and uses it to tie Funk to the ringpost by the throat. He goes to take Funk's head off with a chair, and Funk ducks just in the nick of time. A low blow causes Funk to yell a series of profanities before Funk musters a comeback of his own that includes his own low blow. Woman takes a spinning toehold when she interferes, and I think that's the first time I've ever seen her get any comeuppance in any angle at all, come to think of it. The match is eventually thrown out when the referee loses control. Who could have possibly seen that coming with these two? Fun match.

[1991-09-21-WCW-Saturday Night] Barry Windham vs Mr Hughes / Barry Windham and Lex Luger
Hughes loses his sunglasses quickly, so his brag in Jericho's book that they never fell off during a match was a lie. The announcers sell the point that Hughes isn't out to pin Windham, he's out to take him out so he's not a challenge to Luger. This was way better than I thought it would be, and it's not all just Windham carrying things. Race interferes liberally, which in this case helps the match. Hughes looks surprisingly athletic here, and Windham even bleeds, which surprises me for a TV match. I love Hughes putting on a figure four and it being put over as this hitman-like attempt to break Barry's leg. Hughes takes some wild bumps for a guy his size. Windham is about to rub Race's face in the concrete when Luger runs out from behind to attack him with a chair for the DQ. Hottest match on WCW TV in a long time thanks to the action in the ring, Harley Race at ringside, and great announcing by Jim Ross and Paul E. Later in the show, Windham is out bandaged up and wants Luger in the ring right now. Hughes come backs out and they brawl while Luger stands back and casually looks on. Great stuff.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
Does Larry really think anything there makes him look good? So much of that seems like pure bullshit, and he also comes across as impossible to work with.

[1991-09-21-WCW-Saturday Night] Lex Luger and Tom Zenk
Clip from another show recently. Tom Zenk is angry on behalf of the fans for Luger turning his back on him and is yelling at Race and Hughes about it. Luger finally comes out and says he'll allow Zenk to walk if he drops this right now. Luger ends up giving him a piledriver, which injures him, and now Zenk is a referee while he recovers. Silly angle. Tom Zenk is really the best they could do for an angle like this? I can't figure out if they needed to build challengers to make Luger look good, or if Luger needed to put over potential challengers, but this is neither. They cap this off with Jim Ross interviewing Zenk about all of this. What a lame-o.

[1991-09-21-USWA-Memphis TV] Dutch Mantell vignette / Interview: Billy Joe Travis / Dutch Mantell, Eric Embry & Eddie Marlin
Dutch is still looking for Stan Hansen. This kills me. He points out getting a letter in the mail that really angered him, because it contained tons of profanity and inside wrestling terms. Weeeiiirrd. Dutch is determined to find out who sent him this, and gets bleeped in the process. Curious where this is leading. Next, BILLY JOE TRAVIS is out for an interview. "Love Shack" is his entrance music. Could he be any more awesome? He's out to play a little diddy on his guitar and gets booed out of the studio. He's singing "The Eyes Of Texas Are On Me" to the tune of the Battle Hymn Republic. He's about to have a match with Chris Frazier, and makes his opponent stand there and wait while he finishes his tune. Frazier gives him a hard time about it and gets a guitar to the head in a brutal looking spot. No match. Finally, Dutch Mantell is out. He knows he's not supposed to be here today, but that letter is really angering them. He wants whoever sent him the letter to come out. Embry is out to insist that it's not him. Dave Brown ends up outing him for something bad he said about Dutch earlier in the show. Dutch verifies the accuracy of this with the studio crowd, and Embry accuses everyone in the studio of lying. Embry frantically tries to make peace, even offering an alliance, and Dutch asks the obvious question -- if he didn't write the letter, why did he come out so quickly to say he didn't write it? Things get heated as Embry keeps digging his hole, and Tojo ends up hitting Dutch from behind with the Texas flag. Babyfaces finally clear Embry and Tojo. Good segment, even if the premise of letter writing is silly. Embry looks way too sleazy to sit down and pen a letter, by the way, if we're judging purely on a surface level. Eddie Marlin is out in the next segment to point out how Embry has been the source of so many problems. Embry comes out and punches him right in the face and starts choking him out. Jeff Jarrett tries to make the save, and Billy Joe Travis tackles im on the way and they end up brawling. Dirty White Boy is finally out to chase Embry away. Marlin looks visibly shaken and does a great job in this. Marlin should have won Best Non-Wrestling Performer in the WON Year End Awards at least once.

[1991-09-21-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Ric Flair & Bobby Heenan
I love Paul Bearer, but again, Flair being a guest here makes this Just Another Angle, not to mention that this would have come across so much better with Flair wearing a suit and being interviewed by Vince, especially since it's by far his best promo this year. I'm also not sure Flair needed Heenan (or later Perfect). "While you were in Hollywood makin' movies, Thunderlips, I was winnin' world titles."

[1991-09-15-CWA] Dave Finlay vs Dave Taylor
Finlay with another terrific performance, and this time, the camerawork is better, so the stiffness stands out more than it did in the Benoit match. Taylor looks really good, and the match follows the same template. I think this one may have been better. I really enjoyed watching Finlay lay in his shots, along with all the crowd-taunting they did. Taylor gorilla press slams Finlay onto his knee at point in an awesome spot. I know it's the style, but I struggle sometimes with rounds because it halts momentum, so that was the only real drawback here for me.

[1991-09-15-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Randy Savage
Savage does an incredible sit-down interview from home with Gene Okerlund. It's the most human I've ever seen him. Elizabeth is understandably having some trouble getting over what happened at the wedding reception. He wants to be reinstated so he can do something about this. He thanks Sid Justice for standing between the cobra and Elizabeth. Since his career is over, all that he can hope for is for Sid to make him pay for what he has done. This was GREAT.

[1991-09-14-WCW-Saturday Night] Sting vs Steve Austin / Sting, Cactus Jack and Abdullah the Butcher
Highlights from the one-night tournament for the vacant U.S. title at The Omni. Sting vs Austin was the final. Stupid finish, as Lady Blossom gets on the apron to congratulate Austin after he hits the Stun Gun and Austin starts celebrating with her. It's not really believable that the heels are that dumb, but it's all to set up the recent Maria spot from ROH with Sting and Lady Blossom. Sting takes the match and the title. This is followed by a recap of all the gift box angles so far. Sting reminds me of Cena in his promo. Cactus with an even better promo than before.

[1991-09-14-WCW-Saturday Night] Control Center
Paul E. hosts this and is very funny in how seriously he takes all of this. Recap of The Patriots -- Todd Champion and Firebreaker Chip -- winning the U.S. tag titles from the Freebirds. Wow, that finish looked terrible, but the finish got a pop. We also get a promo from Sting, and he's determined to find out who his benefactor is. Insane that WCW would run this angle less than a year after the Black Scorpion killed him as a top guy. Cactus cuts another strong promo in response.

[1991-09-14-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler & Dirty White Boy vs Eric Embry & Phil Hickerson / Jerry Lawler and Phil Hickerson / Dutch Mantell vignette
Clip from MSC. BILLY JOE TRAVIS comes out of nowhere and smashes a guitar over Dirty White Boy's head. YES!!!! Jarrett and Fuller suddenly make the save, and my life is complete. Back in the studio, Lawler is rapping with Michael St. John during PY Chu-Hi's squash. Lawler tells St. John to drop the act - everyone knows he's Phil Hickerson, and just call it like you see it. I would have cracked up if Michael St. John had responded by respecting his logic and pointing out that Lawler has half ownership in the promotion and that Brian Christopher is his son. The two get into a shouting match, and Hickerson teases something about Lawler's family life, perhaps just that, and they end up in a fight. But Billy Joe Travis sneaks up behind Lawler and breaks a guitar over his head. YES!!!! He's still here! The heels end up working over Lawler until Dundee makes the save. Bull Pain ends up coming out so Samantha can whip Dundee with her belt. This brings out Dirty White Boy, Jeff Jarrett and Robert Fuller eventually, among others. GREAT, chaotic studio brawl that just keeps going and going, and BILLY JOE TRAVIS! Lawler and DWB are back out to hype Monday night, and how often do you get two babyfaces who can talk like this? Lawler/DWB vs Hickerson/Travis on Monday night with lumberjacks holding guitars? Sign me up! Finally, Dutch Mantel CONTINUES the Stan Hansen running gag! He is sitting by a phone in case Stan Hansen calls. The phone rings, and ... it's "Eddie Marlin ... what a disappointment." Christopher Love and his heel troupe is coming after Dutch's hair, and Dutch wants Hansen's hair. Dutch is a riot!

[1991-09-14-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Hulk Hogan
First, we get a commercial for the HOT TICKET PPV Hulk Hogan - A Real American Story. Did anyone ever see this? It's overkill when Hogan starts his interview by also hyping the Hulk Hogan hotline. This guy was really obnoxious and self-absorbed sometimes. Eventually, this segues into Hogan talking about Ric Flair. He actually puts him over, and accepts his challenge to face him anywhere anytime. He says he has to know who the better man is for his own peace of mind. I'm sort of surprised they struck the right chord.

[1991-09-12-W*ING] Mr Pogo & TNT vs Iceman & Akitoshi Saito (Cage)
Surprised at how much I liked this. It was thrown on here because it was on Jeff Lynch's Best of 1991 set and we tried to include all of that, but that was really the only reason it was here. But this reminded me of some of the better FMW brawls after they started finding their groove later in the decade. Pogo/TNT as a strong heel team to head off Iceman and Saito really worked, and the focus wasn't so much on needless stunts or over the top violence as it was hate and blood. There were a few crazy spots, especially in the oddly-scored post-match angle, but the match felt like a war in a feud instead of people just getting violent for no particular reason. I don't think it's as good as the FMW 4/90 tag, but it's worked in the same spirit.
-
Stan Hansen
Anyway, the three decades thing could also apply to Shawn Michaels. It definitely applies to Jumbo Tsuruta, Jerry Lawler, Terry Funk and Genichiro Tenryu. It probably even applies to Antonio Inoki. It's a small club, but it's not a party of one.
-
Stan Hansen
I was thinking specifically of the Destroyer match, and a few of the Inoki matches he started having in 1977 that I sadly don't recall dates for.
-
Stan Hansen
Stan Hansen is threatening Ric Flair as my GOAT. I'm not ready to give him the mantle just yet, but he had great matches that spanned three decades. He pushed everyone around him to be better. For me, it's a question of if his US output is every bit as good as Flair's Japan output. And I haven't dived into 80s Hansen in the AWA enough to know how I feel about that just yet. Flair's US run and Hansen's Japan run feel pretty comparable. Hansen may even have a slight edge. I'm officially open to the idea.

[1991-09-12-Hamada's UWF] Los Ninja Turtles & Robin Hood vs Shu El Guerrero & Jose Luis Feliciano & El Texano & Black Terry & Ricky Boy
Great match with all sorts of awesome exchanges between Robin Hood (a Brazo brother, who gives a superstar performance) and the other team, who were great athletic bumpers. It was cool to see this given so much time, and this was the most luchaesque match I have ever seen in Japan. I'd be interested in hearing more thoughts on this from lucha novices, because I agree with Phil that this feels like a really great intro match.

[1991-09-10-NJPW-Battle Autumn] Hiroshi Hase vs Tatsumi Fujinami
This is mostly Hase tying Fujinami in knots, which is perfectly fine, but it's a little on the bland side, even if it is solid. Almost every positive this match has is because of Hase.
