[1991-09-04-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Mitsuharu Misawa & Toshiaki Kawada vs Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue
Lots of drama in this one, as the crowd is hot, and Jumbo tries to yank Misawa's shoulder off of his body early on, which leads to Misawa needing his shoulder taped up. Meanwhile, Kawada is fighting the good fight for his team. Misawa makes a triumphant save when Kawada is in a crab. The tape ends up falling off right away, which unfortunately hurts the visual effect of what Misawa is doing. Great moment when Misawa gets a tiger suplex on Taue and Jumbo breaks the nearfall by kicking him in the shoulder before coming in to give Misawa some type of weird reverse abdominal stretch thing. The rest of the match is built around doing big damage to Misawa's shoulder and giving Misawa a series of heroic kickouts. Misawa finally rallies a big comeback and the match starts to feel like something special is about to happen when Misawa start getting big nearfalls. He then submits Jumbo (!!) with a front facelock, which gets a huge pop from the crowd. It was about time something big happened, and what a great match and moment.

Who's the "local flavor" HOF picks for next year?
I could see them inducting Terry Taylor. He's a friend of HHH and he was a Mid South star.

Who's the "local flavor" HOF picks for next year?
Cornette throws a wrench in MX HOF plans, and I'm not sure about Kamala with his amputated foot or whatever the story was. But I do think Magnum TA is a likely pick. I wonder if they would induct the Rock & Roll Express.

Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair
The only thing I'll say in response to that is that I'm not a fan of generalizations about "the site". PWO doesn't have any set opinions on anything. I don't think there's a specific type of wrestling that people prefer over others here. If a wrestler has any fans at all, they probably have at least one who posts here.

PWO Radio
Well, we don't do anything dry, so Today In Wrestling History would be days of heightened interest where a lot has happened, like January 4, which has the Fingerpoke of Doom/Foley title win, TNA trying to bring back the Monday Night Wars and all the New Japan Tokyo Dome shows. It definitely wouldn't be a monotone reading of title changes. And yes, each yearbook would be a series of podcasts, not just one. We will probably also do the occasional call-in show and I was suggesting to Will last night an idea I really like, which is to have a podcast on societal things we learned through wrestling as a kid. For example, a college friend of mine got into a debate with his English teacher in junior high over use of the phrase "bleeding profusely" in an essay, because the teacher questioned how that was even possible, or what it meant. I have quite a few other examples of my own that I will bring up too.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
Actually there's a thing in the Observer from around the time the UWF trophy cover came out. Dave says most of the comments he'd heard about that picture were in the same vein of "why were all those guys staging a photo together?' It's fine because wrestling was and still is portrayed as a legit competition on some level. Boxers who talk trash and punch each other in the face over and over again still get together for a news conference/weigh-in/photo-op before the fight. Obviously, I think way too much about things like this...... I guess the difference is that boxing doesn't run angles where people are sneak attacked in parking lots, or during matches or interviews.

[1991-08-IWCCW] Rick Rude and the Honky Tonk Man
Who is the best Intercontinental champion of all time? Who has the most devastating neckbreaker? Tony Rumble fumbles through an interview with George Napolitano about it, because apparently the entire wrestling world can't stop buzzing about this sudden controversy. Napolitano points out that Rude has held far more titles, including the WCCW title, and this brings out Honky Tonk Man to dispute this. HTM points out that he held the IC title for 15 months, and they keep going back and forth about it. This angle is like a bad Pro Wrestling Only thread. A babyface Rick Rude wants to settle this in the ring and seems fired up about it. What a silly premise.

[1991-08-31-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler & Dutch Mantel
The Dragon Master, whose height has grown every time he has been mentioned, has won the USWA title. This Monday night, Dutch Mantell will sit next to Christopher Love at ringside to keep him from interfering. He pokes fun at himself, saying he looked all over WCW and couldn't find him, and asks anyone who knows where he is to write the Memphis studio. Hilarious!

[1991-08-31-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Bobby Heenan
Heenan is out in a suit with the Big Gold Belt, which Vince calls "a championship belt par excellence". Heenan says this is the belt of the Real World Champion Ric Flair. The WWF title is a cheap imitation of the real deal. I wish someone other than Paul Bearer had conducted this interview, because while I have grown to LOVE those facial expressions, it makes the impact of this too much a part of the machine. Heenan trolls Piper, and Piper leaves the broadcast booth in a very obviously edited in spot, but it's a nice bit of production. Piper tells Hogan there is only one real champion, and that's Hulk Hogan. Piper pulls the "I Scare Flair" line out of mothballs. Heenan says if Flair was there, he'd have Piper on his hands and knees shining the belt. Piper says he'll shine the belt all right and spits on it. Just ... wow.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
That's an awesome cover, but covers like that, the UWF trophy pic and Hogan/Andre on the cover of Wrestlemania III used to make me wonder as a kid why exactly those wrestlers who hated each other so much were in the same place.

[1991-08-30-JWP] Devil Masami vs Itsuki Yamazaki
We haven't gotten two 80s stars going at it in the 90s very many times, so this is a real treat. Forget what her gimmick was later, as Devil was a super heel here. There's a great spot where she rests Yamazaki's hand on the bottom rope so she can stand on it. It eventually turns into another limb-based match, this time with Yamazaki doing a number on Devil's knee. Devil has this great spot where she's crawling around like a wounded animal daring Yamazaki to bring the attack again, then tries to lull her into a false sense of security to attack her, but Yamazaki was just playing along and goes right back to the attack. All kinds of neat bits of psychology you wouldn't expect in a Joshi match, as the sensibility resembles Fujiwara, if not the style. If there's anything this suffers from, it's that it feels extremely my turn-your turn for the first half or so. Lots of interesting stuff, but the momentum shifts are so fast and nothing is really sold in the long term. But once the match settles into a groove, that falls by the wayside. This is a sleeper pick, and something I don't expect others to like nearly as much as I did, but I really loved it as something completely different than expected.

[1991-08-30-JWP] The Scorpion vs Cutie Suzuki
The JWP style is a lot more grounded and deliberate than the AJW style at this point. Perhaps that always rings true. I really enjoyed this match. It was built around matwork, kicks and body part-focused attacks. Both of them sold the onslaught well, especially Suzuki, and it built to an exciting conclusion. While I think AJW is peaking higher at this point, this feels way more compelling in a totally different way. There's a charm to this. This will definitely show up on my top 100 for the year.

[1991-WWA-TV] Fuerza Guerrera vs Negro Casas (originally aired in either 1986 or 1987)
It's interesting to see Fuerza working a match without the comedy. This is more title match style, and Fuerza looks excellent, showing that the clumsy act is just that, a clumsy act, and that he's a very accomplished wrestler. I really enjoyed all of this, but the final fall was especially great, with each guy getting increasingly desperate to end this, and the nearfalls piling up. There's no real mean streak on display here. This is two pros going at it in a pretty straightforward wrestling match. But the match doesn't feel like it's missing anything for that, simply because it's executed so well.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN
This segment (really, this whole card) is an amazing display of the creative brilliance of Vince McMahon. When he's on, he's on. The gap between this and WCW is laughable. We also get the famous song that made another appearance in the Test/Stephanie wedding. TOGETHERRRRRRRRRRRRRR ... OUR LOVE WILL LAST FOREVERRRRRRRRRRRRR. Who is this guy supposed to be that is Randy Savage's best man? You'd think they would have chosen another wrestler. The maid of honor seems unhappy, almost like someone who privately is against this. Savage using his wrestling voice all the way through his vows is awesome. Not to mention that the reverend calls him Macho Man Randy Savage. They didn't even ask the objections question. This is the most feel good PPV of all time. Great choice saving the reception angle until after the show went off the air and replaying it on future shows. There is extra reception footage on the Coliseum Video version, which I've never seen. "A BLENDER, OHHHH YEAH!" Liz is trying to tell him they are supposed to wait to open presents, but Savage refuses to wait. Then we get the money angle, as a snake pops out of one of the boxes and Jake taunts Elizabeth with it. Undertaker hits Savage with the urn, and Sid shows up to make the save. This was a wild, ballsy angle. Completely over the top, but pretty crazy and unexpected at the time.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] A MATCH MADE IN HELL
Last few minutes. Warrior disappears into the locker room, not to be seen for months, while Hogan throws powder in Slaughter's face to get the pin and blow off that feud. Post-match, Sid joins the ranks of the Hogan friends that will be opponents in the future as they do a shared posedown. We close things out with one more clip of The Mountie in jail where he is propositioned by a leather daddy behind bars. Entertainment for the whole family!

Funny watching the Warrior interview while realizing what was happening with him behind the scenes at this point. Hogan does almost all of the talking.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] Legion of Doom vs Nasty Boys
Historic match, as the Roadies become the only team in history to have won the NWA, WWF and AWA tag team titles with the result of this match. A good moment for them, but they messed up by pushing them as a top tag team instead of as a tag team on part with the top singles stars. It just wasn't the WWF way. More fun footage of The Mountie being hauled off to jail closes this out.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] Interviews / The Mountie goes to jail
We hear from the Nasty Boys, Legion of Doom, Sgt Slaughter, Sid Justice (with secret footage shown of the heels trying to bribe Slaughter & Co going into the main event), The Mountie arrest continues to entertain. The exaggerated reactions to getting fingerprinted, and "YOU WANT THE FINGER? HERE'S THE FINGER!"
