[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] Ted DiBiase vs Virgil
One of the better laid out matches and moments in WWF history, as Virgil gets his redemption for years of bullying and abuse by pinning DiBiase decisively. This is not at all a great match, but it's a great credit to DiBiase (and Piper) for carrying the feud and the match and making it memorable. The false finish with Sherri was very well done.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] Bobby Heenan and Hulk Hogan's arm
Heenan knocks on Hogan's dressing room door holding the Big Gold Belt, and gets the door slammed in his face. This actually happened.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] Bret Hart vs Mr Perfect
I don't like this match quite as much as its rep, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. There were some really spirited nearfalls, and Perfect gave a lot to Bret, including him kicking out of the Perfectplex. Still, there is some weirdness about this, as it seems like that should have been a bigger part of the final stretch instead of just another nearfall. I also didn't care for how he started to work over the leg and didn't. But they took the crowd on a ride and Bret had his moment, so the big stuff was done right. Hennig puts on a classy performance on his way out, and Bret starts looking like an up and coming star. I still love how Alfred Hays asks Stu what he thought and then pulled the mic away from him as soon as he started talking.

[1991-08-26-WWF-Summerslam] Summerslam introduction
Cute segment with Savage fretting over his tux and putting his hat and sunglasses on Lord Alfred Hays. Savage is The Man. Savage threatens anyone who objects to the marriage. I think they wanted us to think something would happen, even after the PPV started. Vince is AWESOME in narrating the PPV intro. "IT'S SUMMERSLAM - AND THE LIVIN' IS ANYTHING BUT EASY."

[1991-08-24-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Lex Luger & Harley Race
They have hyped Luger vs Simmons at the Omni on national TV so much, and I'm betting they still drew a disappointing gate. If it's not the same interview from before, it's close enough.

[1991-08-24-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Cactus Jack
We'll find out why Cactus Jack is in WCW soon enough. I didn't realize he was on TV at all before the Clash.

[1991-08-24-USWA-Memphis TV] Dirty White Boy and Eric Embry / Chris Love & Dragon Master debut / Interview: Humongous
DWB still has a limp, but he is ready to go. He has a waiver (folded up in his pocket?) that will allow him to return to the ring, but releases the USWA from liability. Embry is out quickly and says they don't have to wait on Eddie Marlin. He tells him to go to the ring and Embry attacks him right away. DWB rallies a comeback, but Tony Pritchard attacks him from behind. They are about to take his knee out with a chair, but JIMMY VALIANT has seen enough and clears the ring with a garbage can. Have we moved on from Lawler/Embry without giving it a definitive conclusion? Next up, Bert Prentice is out as Christopher Love and brings a huge crate to debut the Dragon Master. He talks about Lawler putting the AWA and World Class out of business because Lawler is not a box office draw again. He talks about dropping gates in the USWA (!) and tells Lawler he just got his two weeks notice. If he doesn't quit in two weeks, the Dragon Master will take him out. This looks almost exactly like the Ricky Steamboat costume later in the year when he returns at the November Clash, so I hope I remember to make jokes. Love refuses to reveal the true identity of the Dragon Master until the time is right. Finally, Humongous is out for an interview, looking nothing like Sid. He just looks like a muscular dude in a Wal-Mart mask. Is that Debbie Combs? She fawns over his body and is obviously attempting to distract him for a sneak attack. She manages to unmask Humongous as Randy Lewis and Bull Pain attacks him from behind. WTF is this?? Jeff Jarrett and Robert Fuller make the save.

[1991-08-24-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Jake Roberts / Interview: Sid Justice / Interview: Bobby Heenan
Great interview from Jake, who explains his heel turn with a parable. Excited to re-live this run. Next, Sid is out for an interview and promises to call it down the middle. Finally, Heenan is trolling Hogan with Flair's belt, which I love.

[1991-08-24-UWF-Moving On 5] Nobuhiko Takada & Billy Scott vs Kazuo Yamazaki & Tatsuo Nakano
This was okay, but at best it was too much of a good thing. A 30-minute draw in this style is tough unless there's a lot of drama and playing to the crowd, which there wasn't here. Weird choice to headline a show too. Tabe called it "a keeper", which I know isn't a ringing endorsement, but I wasn't a fan.

[1991-08-23-CMLL] Atlantis & Mascara Sagrada & Octagon vs Pirata Morgan & Pierroth & Kendo Nagasaki
Wow, what a fun six-man featuring such a weird collection of personalities. Things are especially heated between Octagon and Pierroth. Fun for how much of a mish-mash it is, with lots of emotion, chaos and a post-match angle to boot!

[1991-08-23-CMLL] Chavo & Eddy & Mando Guerrero vs El Satanico & MS-1 & Masakre
Pretty solid match. Each member of Los Infernales takes turns getting their legs worked over by the brothers Guerrero to start us out, and the Guerreros take the first fall pretty handily. Los Infernales ensure that they won't repeat their fate in the second fall by aggressively keeping Mando and later Eddy from tagging out. The third fall is a toss-up and builds to a series of hot nearfalls at the end. A bit formulaic and predictable, but the work is really good throughout and builds to a nice last few minutes.

[1991-08-23-PWFG] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Lato Kiraware
This is Fujiwara making mincemeat of a guy who looks like a monster but is totally outclassed. The spot where Fujiwara sort of grazes Kirawarik with a kick and catches him off guard is great. The surprise angles at which Fujiwara can sneak in a kick are a lot of fun. The rhythm of this is off kilter and Fujiwara keeps catching him with kicks at points in the match where you don't expect it based on the pacing or their positioning, which is what makes this fun. The finish is just an exclamation point on that. Short but fun.

[1991-08-23-PWFG] Wayne Shamrock vs Masakatsu Funaki
I didn't get as into this one as I did the previous Shamrock match with Sano, but it was still a very good match. I was about to talk about the athleticism and lack of selling, then saw that Phil covered that. So yes, workrate shootstyle is a great way to describe this. Really an incredible display in that regard actually, but there was no dramatic arc to really put it over the top.

[1991-08-18-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Hulk Hogan vs Sgt. Slaughter
"One thing you can trust in is Hulkamania. You always have been able to, and you always will be able to." -- Vince McMahon, in the context of a discussion about Jake's recent turn and whether or not Sid Justice can be trusted to call the Summerslam main event down the middle Quick heated match on the Summerslam Spectacular. Adnan and Mustafa are at ringside for Slaughter and liberally interfere on Slaughter's behalf. It's so over the top that it's pretty fun. They are working over Hogan in a big way before Summerslam in a hot angle. Sid doesn't really make the save, but he does chastise the heels. A bloody Hogan is about to hit the heels with a chair and Sid takes it from him and admonishes him, I guess because being a special referee in one match entitles you to enforce rules anytime before the match too. The Hogan/Slaughter feud is about to wrap up, but I've enjoy it, mainly because Slaughter has been allowed to get heat on Hogan at the right times.

[1991-08-18-CWA] Chris Benoit vs Dave Finlay
This is slightly clipped throughout, which is a bit annoying, but they have a good match, with Finlay as the heel and Benoit as the babyface. Finlay's execution is so flawless that I'm a little speechless by it. Everything he does is basic, but everything he does looks great. I love the shoulderblocks in the corner, the knee drops, and smashing Benoit's face on the ring apron. But it's the attitude that makes it all resonate, as Finlay is a really surly heel. Benoit works like Brian Pillman around the same time, which means he's really good. It's a match that I think would be very fondly remembered had it happened in the U.S. or even in Japan on a bigger show. But I'm not sure it would have had as much heat in either place as it did here. They definitely worked this for their audience.

[1991-08-18-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi vs Jumbo Tsuruta & Akira Taue
Jumbo gives a great performance here, and his budding rivalry with Kobashi takes center stage just as much or more than his ongoing rivalry with Misawa. He tries saving Taue after a few teases and gets clotheslined out of the ring for his troubles. Kobashi even taunts him at one point to come back in. And Jumbo is really anxious to tag in when Kobashi is in, doing the eye rake across the top ring rope a few times, which gets him jeered by the crowd. Every time Kobashi starts rallying a comeback, Jumbo saves. Then when Misawa finally makes it in, every time Misawa strings together any offense, Jumbo saves again. It's awesome because I am really clamoring for him to get his comeuppance. Kobashi also takes a hell of a beating, including a belly to back suplex from the apron to the floor. There's a viciousness and stubbornness to Jumbo's act here that works really well, and I like how they switch things up to make Kobashi more the focal point. It's like they decided that since he is doing the job (which was painfully obvious to me when I looked at who was involved in the match) that they might as well put him over first as much as possible. The first All Japan match of the summer that has really excited me. I just wish we had gotten another Jumbo vs Kobashi singles match to follow it up.

[1991-08-17-WWA] Terry Funk vs Bob Backlund
Not really a good match, but Funk's antics made it interesting - not just his usual crazy man schtick, but also the way he worked holds. I loved him resting his knees on Backlund's face during the test of strength. This match was slow moving, but never felt slow moving, if that makes any sense.

[1991-08-17-WWA] Stan Lane & Jim Cornette vs Jerry Lawler & Mark Curtis
The announcer is going on about "comedy" and "great talkers", going on about what a draw Lawler is, how it's weird that he's never been with a major organization and probably also using a few other kayfabe-questionable terms too. Cornette and Lane as babyfaces is not what I expected. This is all clowning and comedy at first, but with these four, that is probably the best approach. I'm always impressed at how sort of decent Cornette is in the ring. Surprisingly, he and Mark Curtis work harder and bring more actual wrestling action than either Lawler or Lane. I enjoyed this.

[1991-08-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin vs Dustin Rhodes
Dusty and Dustin do an interview with Paul E. to set up Dustin's shot at the TV title. Lady Blossom interrupts, which looks SO bush league when it happens against a green screen, and accuses Dustin of sending her roses. She also never faces the camera until she leaves, just to make this even more cheap looking. This promotion ... what the fuck? This looks an ICW segment. This was a very good match with both guys looking like future stars, and I guess in some ways, they did rise through the ranks together, as they both worked in Texas early on, worked in WCW for a few years and then left and ended up in the WWF around the same time. They stuck to basics, but executed them really well, and I even liked the Lady Blossom DQ finish, as it keeps the door open to more matches between the two.

[1991-08-17-WCW-Saturday Night] Lex Luger, Ron Simmons and Barry Windham
Clip of Simmons calling out Luger. Luger finally comes out to confront him, but Mr. Hughes blindsides Simmons. Barry Windham makes the save and clears the ring. Jim Ross keeps saying Luger clearly "took advantage" of Simmons, which is some strange wording. Later in the show, Windham is out to call Luger out yet again. Again, it's a trap. Luger works over Windham until Simmons makes the save with a chair. Windham and Simmons form a partnership since they have the same enemies. Again, heel Luger as champ could have gone somewhere, but this all just seems so half-assed in terms of the booking This wraps up with Luger and Race cutting a promo for the Omni show. Good promo, but something is off in all of this. This is a company really hurting in the absence of Flair.

[1991-08-17-USWA-Memphis TV] Bill Dundee and Danny Davis
Dundee wants a submission match with Danny Davis, and GOOD LORD do I want to see that! Davis interrupts and things get heated when they throw a few slaps at each other. More good stuff with these two. I am digging this feud.

[1991-08-17-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Awesome Kong / Interview: Jerry Lawler / Dragon Master vignette
Clip of Lawler pinning Awesome Kong at MSC. Lawler is out for an interview in one of the ugliest shirts I've ever seen when Christopher Love interrupts. We hear his voice, but don't see him. He blames Jerry Lawler for putting the AWA and WCCW out of business and he's here for revenge, because Lawler has put him on the unemployment line for three years. He is determined to make Lawler lose his house and car. He announces that he is sending the Dragon Master after Lawler, and we get a music video hyping his arrival, which is just him in a dragon mask while eerie music plays. Lawler wants to know why all the monsters and freaks are always coming after him. Memphis wrestling.
