[1991-06-16-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Barber Shop: Andre the Giant
Andre is out on his cane again. Brother Bruti asks what the future holds for Andre. He calmly says he needs a new knee, but his doctor told him he's too young for it. He plans on getting his knee rebuilt, then coming for revenge. No way did they think they could do an Earthquake/Andre feud this late, but the Bushwhackers match at Summerslam definitely felt like an attempt to salvage something out of the build.

[1991-06-15-WCW-Saturday Night] Fabulous Freebirds & Badstreet vs Young Pistols & Dustin Rhodes
Tomk has done an amazing write-up of this match in the past, so I'm excited to finally watch it. It's supposedly a match that demonstrates stalling as an art form. I can't possibly top his review of this, so I will just say that this is a pretty incredible display of having an incredibly entertaining match by not really doing much of anything except stalling. I LOVE the spot where the heels argue with the ref about the pace of the counts, then get what they ask for and complain. One great comedy spot after another. This is the best way to use the Birds at this point. They are so washed up, but make awesome bumbling idiots. A billion stars, even with Richard Morton running in for the DQ to attack Dustin Rhodes at the end.

[1991-06-15-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Ric Flair / Interview: Lex Luger
Luger cut a post-match promo after the Clash match with Muta. He's ready to take on Flair, and this is a really good promo hyping up how much this title match means to him, and dare I say he actually makes this incarnation of Flair vs Luger seem special compared to the rest. That he could get over his chances at this point despite so much bad booking says a lot. Then we cut to Flair cutting a promo after the Clash. He tells Luger he's the man who will make or break him. Luger touched on the history, and I wish Flair would have too. This should have been an epic build.

[1991-06-15-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: The Hardliners
Murdoch and Slater are dead serious about going after the Steiners. This is a good promo, and a good idea for a tag team. I don't know if they can still bring it in the ring at this point, though.

[1991-06-15-WCW-Saturday Night] Desperados vignette
The Desperados start arguing, as Dutch Mantell yells at Black Bart for saying hello to the Dirty Harry lookalike. Ragtime music starts playing out of nowhere. They are here to find Stan Hansen so he can get them into WCW. They forget their argument and start hugging in sheer excitement over the prospects of this. There's too much comedy in this to list it all, but this is genuinely funny. Take a shot every time someone hits someone else with a cowboy hat.

[1991-06-15-WCW-Saturday Night] Jim Ross, Paul E. Dangerously and Jason Hervey
Paul E. Dangerously is not on the show tonight, because he's in conference with Jim Herd over attacking Jason Hervey at the Clash. Surely, he's getting a raise and being given a humanitarian award. They replay the clip from the Clash, and my spirits are lifted. Jim Ross rants about the issue between Missy and Paul E. while the word COMMENTARY flashes across the screen.

[1991-06-15-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Bobby Heenan & Mr. Perfect
Mr. Perfect introduces Bobby Heenan as his *former* manager, which is a pretty big bombshell. Heenan will be focusing full-time on broadcast journalism. Bearer's facial expressions while Heenan is talking are priceless, but distracting because of the dissonance between the two. The new manager? John Tolos, packaged as COACH!

[1991-06-15-WWF-Superstars] update: Andre the Giant/Earthquake recap
Recap of the angle with Andre and Earthquake from Superstars. They show Andre returning, and he has a bad limp and he's using a cane. Andre's brief promo is excellent.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Ric Flair vs Bobby Eaton (2/3 falls)
The story with this one was always a little sad. This match was created specifically to be Bobby Eaton's coming out party as a singles star. It was supposed to go long and be a showcase. He trained really hard for weeks to prepare himself to have the match of his life. But they crammed too much into the show, so the end result was that they had a 2/3 falls match with only 19 minutes of time left on the show, including entrances and the show wrap up with the announcers. Even with the time they had, I liked this match. But if anything, I'd say this match feels like a good syndie TV main event, while the January 1990 match feels like it could have headlined a Clash. This felt really rushed, especially in the second and third fall. Flair just wasn't performing at the level he was in January 1990, and I prefer Bobby Eaton as a heel. The Flair Flop just for the sake of doing the bump, only to get back up immediately, was pretty bad. Flair was still good, but his act was tired, and he had quite the decline in a pretty short period of time.

WCW Head Bookers
That was the last show before Russo, but I think Nash's booking run was over by this point.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Coming Attraction: Black Blood / Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson
We start off with hype for Black Blood, Billy Jack Haynes under a mask. The clips of him in the ring look terrible. Later, Ricky Morton, who is now RICHARD MORTON, comes out in a suit and has joined the York Foundation. Morton starts heeling it up right away, and Robert Gibson immediately comes out to ask what's going on. Morton says it's all about money and ends up decking Gibson and giving him a piledriver. I loved this, even though Morton is the quintessential babyface. I give this promotion credit for trying lots of new things on this show, but most of their ideas were pretty bad.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Sting and Nikita Koloff / Bruise Cruise commercial
"Ben" (Is this Ben Sullivan?) wins the Sting lookalike contest. As a result, he gets to meet Sting. I understand wanting to heat up Sting vs Nikita, but considering how much WCW struggled with crossover promotion like this, Nikita doing a sneak attack in this segment was probably not a good decision. I say that, then his mother interferes when Nikita goes after the kid, and they are so obviously actors. Still, this promotion is terrible. Then we get a commercial for the Bruise Cruise! Hey, Flair was the center of the advertising for this too!

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Masa Chono & Hiroshi Hase
This crowd loves the Steiners. Too short to really meet its full potential, but the crowd was red hot and they had a fun little spotfest. Great finish too. Post-match, Dick Murdoch and Dick Slater debut as the Hardliners and attack the Steiners. Somewhere in all this, either in the match or the post-match angle, Scott Steiner tore his bicep, and they ended up having to vacate both the WCW and IWGP tag titles. The Steiners were top guys in WCW and New Japan, and this was probably their career peak, so the injury was pretty ill-timed for them. I don't think the team was ever quite the same again after this, even if they did have more good matches.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Barry Windham & Arn Anderson vs Brian Pillman & El Gigante
Short match, but a really good one. Pillman losing the match should have been a bigger moment, but this show was poorly laid out and rushed like crazy. Pillman doing the jump off of Gigante's shoulders was great. But still, because he lost such a short match and they moved on so quickly, this feels like a Pillman burial, whether it was intended to be or not. As a result of the fall, Pillman must leave WCW.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Johnny B. Badd and P.N. News
I love that Pepa and Spinderella are here, but no Salt. It may a Bloomberg-approved segment, but PN cannot wrap at all, and looks ridiculous in that getup. Johnny B. Badd is out before the interview really goes anywhere. Pepa's selling of all of this is TREMENDOUS. Johnny B. Badd is such an awesome gimmick and does the act very well, but this segment is so horrible.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Paul E. Dangerously and Jason Hervey
I hate you, Jason Hervey. Paul E. keeps asking him question and yanking the mic away every time he starts to talk. Paul E. is now WCW's top babyface! He confesses that he's dating Missy Hyatt and has a new car. Paul E. wants to know if he and Missy are in love. Jason Hervey responds by asking how Paul E. felt getting his butt kicked by a woman. Paul E. asks why when everything is new in his life, his girlfriend is used merchandise. Hervey talks a little smack, and ends up getting hit with a telephone. Missy makes the save. I will watch Jason Hervey get attacked anytime I need a pick-me-up.

[1991-06-14-WCW-Clash of the Champions XV] Ric Flair Flash & Bash Sweepstakes
Robin Leach (I think?) narrates a commercial promoting a Ric Flair sweepstakes for the Great American Bash. That they marketed the entire show around a guy whose contract needed to be extended is classic WCW idiocy. I feel bad for the huge Flair fan who won the sweepstakes. It definitely puts the crowd response at that show in perspective when you see how much Flair was part of its hype.By the way ... Flair is saying "At the Great American Bash".

[1991-06-12-NJPW-Fighting Connection] Jushin Liger vs Norio Honaga
The fourth match between these two. Not quite as good at the last two matches they've had, but still very good. Liger in this one shows what he can do as a high flyer, but the match still feels like a chapter in a series, and not just a showy exhibition. It's not as hate-filled as some of their previous matches, but Liger does wrestle like he has something to prove, and I like it in the context of the feud as a whole. Surprised to see Liger bust out a Macho Man elbow yet again. I don't know that these nearfalls would have had as much as they did had Liger not put Honaga over twice, which gave him instant credibility. Liger finally avenges his previous losses with a top rope DDT. Really good.

[1991-06-09-UWF-Beach Brawl] Steve Williams vs Bam Bam Bigelow
I loved this match! Stiff, bloody bull fight. Doc shows a level of aggression that I wish he'd show in All Japan when he's content to sit on the mat. And Bigelow looks like a guy who is actually working at his full potential as an athletic superheavyweight for first. I've always liked Bigelow, but I don't think he's ever had this really great performance. This was one of the better ones I've seen from him. This was exactly the match you'd hope to see from these two. It's short, but it didn't need to go any longer than it did.

Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair
This thread may have given me an ulcer. I'm sort of kidding. I think.
