[1991-04-13-USWA-Memphis-TV] Bill Dundee and J.C. Ice
Clips of a Dundee/Bruno vs Austin/JC Ice match from Mid South Coliseum. Post-match, Dundee spanks his son, and JC throws a big temper tantrum to close things out. Back at the studio, Dundee says his son has been a spoiled brat his entire life and that he's the one responsible for it. JC interrupts quickly to come out and apologize for his recent behavior. He says he would like to go home and talk about it when the Texas Hangmen blindside Dundee and JC is awesome, screaming "DON'T EMBARRASS ME!" Not that hiring hitmen to attack your father is justifiable, but spanking your adult child in front of an arena full of people isn't really justified behavior either.

[1991-04-13-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Ultimate Warrior & The Undertaker
Quite the segment, as it was really the first memorable angle involving the Undertaker. He attacks Warrior from behind while being interviewed, and they lock him in the casket and seal it shut. This is sold as total panic, as Goulet, Garea and others try in vain to open the casket before finally prying it open, where they have to administer CPR. Savage is great on commentary - at first enjoying the attack, and then starting to get scared. A fantastic angle.

[1991-04-12-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett vs Tom Pritchard
Excellent match, the best between them that I have seen so far, especially in the last few minutes. The title was held up going into this, and remains held up even after the match due to a controversial finish involving a ref bump and a dispute between referees. I am perfectly happy to see this feud continue!

[1991-04-12-USWA Texas] Eric Embry vs Bill Dundee
Solid match, but nothing too special, or that I'll remember. Jarrett is handcuffed to Tojo Yammamoto at ringside. I should mention again how much I hate talking on the house mic during wrestling matches. Hate it, hate it, hate it. After a ref bump, Tojo tries to hand a chain to Embry, but Jarrett intercepts and throws it to Dundee, who nails Embry, pins him and takes the Texas title.

[1991-04-06-WCW-Saturday Night] Lex Luger and Nikita Koloff
Luger and Nikita have a fun brawl with the locker room jobbers flooding the ring to break them up. Nikita ends up getting his hands on the U.S. title and nailing Luger with it before destroying the belt on ringpost. Weird that it's the old NWA belt, when I'm pretty sure the whole purpose of Nikita's debut was to present Luger with a new belt, but anyway. I really enjoyed this segment, but you'd think the heat would have been through the roof. It wasn't. RIP to my favorite wrestling belt ever.

[1991-04-06-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Ric Flair
Flair hypes Starrcade in Tokyo replaying on PPV in the month of April, which did a surprisingly high buyrate by WCW standards of the time. Flair and Missy have a little fun.

[1991-04-06-WCW-Worldwide] Ric Flair & Barry Windham vs Ricky Morton & Tommy Rich
The Horsemen can't even get a win over two midcarders at this point, and El Gigante is saved from a heel beatdown by Big Josh. WCW's sense of hierarchy was a complete and total mess at this point. That said, anytime you want WCW fans to react to something, even as late as 1991, put Ric Flair and Ricky Morton in the ring together. Rich is usually a total passenger when he teams with Morton, but this was a really good match with the other three working really hard, and Rich doing a little more than he normally does. Everyone seems to be working more stiff than normal. Check out Flair and Morton laying into each other. The crowd was a little dead at the beginning, and the stiff shots seemed to turn on the heat, which was interesting to watch. Booking problems aside, very much worth checking out.

[1991-04-06-WCW-Pro] Barry Windham vs Brian Pillman
Really strong TV match sees Pillman still selling the War Games injury, with Barry working over his shoulder. Pillman pushes Barry further than would be expected, and Barry wins after rolling through a reverse rollup and holding the tights. He tries to give a post-match promo and Pillman keeps attacking him every time. This was a really good time period for Pillman because he actually had a storyline, but they didn't seem to want him to actually get over from it.

[1991-04-06-USWA-Memphis TV] USWA fans / Jerry Lawler vs Eric Embry
We start off with a montage of interviews from fans regarding what I guess was a new ringside setup at Mid South Coliseum. Sweet Brown and Antoine Dodson, step aside. If this happened now, at least one YouTube remix would be created from this. "Jeff Jarrett has always been a favorite in my household." She is sexually frustrated and wants him, and you can see it in her eyes. Then, we follow with clips of a heated, bloody match with Lawler and Embry from MSC. Lawler throws some fantastic jabs and punches and also throws a fireball at Embry for the finish.

[1991-04-06-USWA-Memphis TV] Doctor announcement / Interview: Jerry Lawler
It's official. Lawler has to take time off to heal a neck injury. The doctor would prefer 6 weeks off, but he's giving him 4 weeks off. Being able to do angles like this is something lost in the national expansion. If your own local doctor says a guy is hurt, then it makes the whole operation seem a little more legitimate.

[1991-04-06-WWF-Superstars] Ted DiBiase vs Reno Riggins
Savage and Piper on commentary for DiBiase and Sherri in the ring is a loaded setup, and I love it. Savage and Piper take off in disgust pretty early on. Just a standard squash and nothing essential, but I like how they handled even inconsequential things like non-angle advancing segments so well in the DiBiase/Virgil feud.

[1991-04-06-WWF-Superstars] Jake Roberts and Earthquake
Savage, Piper and Vince are having WAY too much fun at the broadcast booth. Jake is finishing a squash and Earthquake is headed out for his match when we learn that he's terrified of snakes. Quake sacrifices Jimmy Hart and then runs like hell after selling huge fear for a few minutes. This is great and all, but why didn't Jake just chase him away with the snake when he was attacking Hogan the year before?

This time, IRS goes on a tangent about unreimbursed medical expenses, so I have a feeling he's talking through Vince.

[1991-04-06-AJPW-Championship Carnival] Jumbo Tsuruta vs Toshiaki Kawada
Such a great match in so many ways. It wasn't really an epic, but it didn't need to be. It was another example of Jumbo giving a younger guy so much of a match, only to win in the end. Kawada got plenty of time to shine, which in turn got Jumbo over for beating someone so good. This was the first singles match they had that I know of - if not, definitely the first one since Kawada really found himself, and they made the most of it. Kawada's aggression and Jumbo's selling were a great combination.

Does wrestling TV need writers?
He did mention Cena also, but yes, I agree that the bigger issue is midcarders. There was the WON item a few years ago that Vince was upset when Edge couldn't cut a serious promo one of the first times they tried to push him on top, because the writers had only ever scripted comedy for him.

Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair
That was actually Foley's original point in Have A Nice Day too. Well, that, and being a lousy booker, but mostly just that Flair wasn't a nice person. Over time, it morphed into Flair defending himself against an argument that he held down Foley in WCW, which Foley never really said.

Does wrestling TV need writers?
John, I took his post to be more about writing lines in promos than crafting storylines. And there may be cases where bad talkers would find that useful, but I don't think it's a good practice in general.

Little questions thread
I loved Mid South/UWF until the bitter end. But they kept repeating ideas to diminishing returns, like Watts coming out of retirement, and while they probably did have the best booked show in the country and a roster I really enjoyed, the wrestlers they pushed on top weren't really considered stars at the same level of the top talent in other promotions that had TV in most of his markets. The game was changing in a way where regional promoters weren't going to be able to thrive. Watts knew this, but he tried expansion without any type of national TV coverage, and with no real breakout star. I don't think most of the issues were in his control, but blaming it all on the oil crisis is too easy an answer.

Guys who got away with being bad
I enjoy Brother Love at times, if only for the sheer commitment Bruce Pritchard had to the character. The act did run way too long.
-
Little questions thread
The oil crisis tended to disproportionately affect wrestling promoters who weren't giving people what they wanted to see anymore.

Acknowledging the Past
This is a great topic and I'm glad Jerry brought it up. I do enjoy any form of entertainment - wrestling included - that really rewards people with long memories. I hated the WWF's approach to history in the 1980s, but I also think it's part of what made them successful. They ultimately were seen as a cut above other wrestling promotions because they didn't acknowledge those promotions. They didn't even call themselves wrestling. So as much as I hated it, it was a brilliant bit of marketing and fan education that worked very, very well. Yes, they have built up the past to be so much better than the present, to a point where they can't do Wrestlemania without returning stars at this point. They don't have the star power. And sadly, they don't seem to care all that much.

Current WWE
I missed Raw, what did he say? I was responding to the point about the original quote in whatever publication it was where Cena talked about Rock leaving. Nothing about tonight.
