  1. Equating New Japan juniors with acrobatics is something I never really understood. Is there really a huge gap between the high-flying offense Misawa and Kobashi pulled out, compared to the high-flying offense Liger and Otani pulled out? Liger and Otani probably did more dives, but I would argue that they spent more time working holds than the AJ heavies did. Plenty of New Japan juniors matches are more grounded. I'm not sure I've ever seen Liger work a spotfest. He would be a great wrestler even if he didn't do a lot of flying, and watching old footage, he did a lot less flying than his reputation suggests. His acrobatic ability probably is part of his rep - right or wrong - but it's not the reason Liger was a great wrestler. He didn't really work like Rey, Psicosis and Juventud, or the Michinoku Pro guys.
  2. Nash did return the favor to Goldberg at Spring Stampede ... months after Goldberg had cooled off when it wouldn't mean as much. I remember reading that he considered booking a rubber match where Nash would hire a trainer and they would do an old-style build up. Rumors floated around like crazy during that time, so who knows how true that was.
  3. If you could make a four-hour comp of Liger matches February 2003 forward that would represent him well, what would you choose? I've seen the Hashi match from NOAH, which I thought was outstanding, but not much else. I'm sure he was less consistent, but I'm guessing there's some good stuff mixed in.
  4. All Japan fans tend to boo tactics. American fans tend to boo people. I always liked that because it seems more ... fair? Wait until you get to 1995 and hear the jeers for Taue cutting off Misawa's comeback in the Carny final by just grabbing his injured face and gouging for all his worth. It's probably my favorite moment in All Japan history. Anyway, I've seen wrestlers on opposite sides get booed in the same match. You do something they don't like and they'll boo you.
  5. I loved the time Dave was asked why HHH's body type had changed, and Dave explained that he and Stephanie were trying to conceive a child.
  6. I'm pretty sure there is lots more 80's footage available if that's what you mean. Is there? I may be wrong, but it seems like there's a lot of 70s Florida out there relative to other territories, and that there are footage gaps in the 80s. Maybe it's all relative -- there's less 80s available than for a lot of groups, and more 70s available than for a lot of groups.
  7. My least favorite thing about wrestling: the vast majority of wrestling matches seem to start from square one, not in terms of living their characters but in terms of the actual work in the ring. Wrestlers don't typically learn from mistakes over time and stop making them -- if a specific type of bump gets a reaction, it gets repeated and becomes a trademark. I wish wrestling was geared toward people with long memories. Like, why can't a wrestler sell their knee being worked over in one match for several weeks, or sell severe injuries for months? I know this happens occasionally, but why isn't it the norm? I wish the actual body of the match meant more in booking. I wish wrestlers weren't suddenly more or less effective in the ring just because of a babyface or heel turn. I realize that would be a horrible business model for wrestling, because it would demand that fans remember too much, but I would personally enjoy it a lot.
  8. Link doesn't work, but I am wondering the same thing. I don't know that an 80s set is going to be as kind to Florida as a 70s set would be. I'm guessing there based on rep, I could be wrong. I'm not sure there's a vast difference in available footage between the two decades either.
  9. I'd like to hear about how Scott Hudson's views of wrestling changed in going from being a hardcore fan to being part of wrestling. Some talk about the old WON letters page, how he found out about sheets, etc. would be fun.
  10. This is the coolest thing I've heard all week. I personally love it, but then again, Bash '89 makes me think happy times.

Speaking of Joshi, I just received all of the 1997 non-AJW Joshi that had been recommended prior to that post, along with some things I've seen praised on various match lists. I plan on going through it fairly soon. I'm pulling insane hours at work right now, but when things settle down, I want to try to make sense of it. Right now, there is way, way, way too much Joshi. We need to cut about a third of it.

Fantastic stuff, Pete. I think I agreed with almost every award you gave, along with the runners-up, to a point that I would put almost all of them in the same order even. I admire you having the capacity to make a post like this at the end of the run. I'm usually exhausted by that point.
  13. That's exactly how I would describe this match. And matches like that tend to be my favorites.
  14. Has him agree? HHH is so transparently phony in this interview and in the way the WON story was told that I'm surprised Bruno fell for any of it, but I never saw it anywhere that Bruno insisted that he be vindicated. I love the line in the WON where it says HHH always saw wrestling being more like it was in the Bruno days when he gained power. You know, like those backstage skits where Bruno received a blowjob from the Fabulous Moolah and accused Gorilla Monsoon of killing his girlfriend and then having sex with her. Or the tag team run where Bruno and Pedro Morales ran around pointing at their crotches and making shoot comments. And who can forget the time the microphone that dropped from the MSG ceiling fell on Vince Sr., and he shouted "Bruno, I can't feel my legs!" Yes, HHH's run as a top guy has been remarkably like Bruno's. Wait, you say. By "gained power", he didn't mean getting to the top of the promotion as a wrestler, he meant acting as Vince's successor. That makes sense, since when I saw Kharma and Sin Cara, I immediately thought about 1960s WWWF. I give HHH credit for bullshitting his way into this, but this is even less sincere than his feigned admiration of Flair.
  15. Childs has a science project? Looking forward to listening to this soon.
  16. Hmmm, I actually really enjoyed this. It's probably not even match of the night, but I thought they worked an excellent match. But then again, I usually like the Steiners in Japan. Hase and Sasaki got a lot more offense in this match than I remembered, as my original thoughts were that it was pretty one-sided. Not a classic on the level that it's sometimes hyped, but definitely a very good match.
  17. This was an okay match that was lacking heat. I hated how many attempts both guys made to hit their finishers. Muta looked like an idiot repeatedly going for the moonsault when it hadn't worked. There is an aura that always accompanies these two facing each other, and that's present here, but they have had better matches than this.
  18. I don't think I've ever really seen an Akira Nogami match, so I wasn't sure what to expect here. But this was fantastic. Granted, that was mainly because Liger looked incredible, but Nogami was really good too. This is the best juniors match in a dome that I can recall seeing. It's weird that this is one of the first matches of its kind, and the matches that followed it didn't try to take from the example they set here in how they worked the match -- which was to bring out the highspots in the opening minutes and create an emotional hook through Liger's selling of his knee injury. This was worked really big, and despite the offense being pretty top notch for the time period, the layout is classically basic. I really loved this.

  20. The yearbooks sort of took precedent over those for me, but perhaps I'll fire them up again one day. I'd love to walk through 1989 since it's such a beloved year.

  22. I still think RIC FLAIR IS MISSING had an incredible amount of potential. They should have had him travel around the country and hosted a sweepstakes prize for whoever found him first and could get a picture.
