Match of the Week: 2/3 - 2/9: 5/18/94 All Japan Misawa/Kikuchi/Kobashi vs. Hansen/Williams/Ace
In the best All Japan matches, there is usually a logic to the saves. I would need to rewatch in order to go into more detail, but a large part of the Misawa/Akiyama vs Kawada/Taue feud in '96 was the saves. Throughout the year, Misawa bailed Akiyama out when the going got tough. When it came time for the tag league final, he made clear that there would be no more saves. The payoff to that is pretty great.

A thread in which Dylan compares various wrestlers to HHH
Thanks for the clarification. Perhaps the difference is that I usually am a little bent out of shape when I give off that appearance.

A thread in which Dylan compares various wrestlers to HHH
When have I ever said Kane had zero good matches? You seem to enjoy assigning me positions that I never take - and specifically arguing points that I make when others make them too, I'm guessing simply because I am the one making them - which is honestly the primary reason I hate this board right now.

A thread in which Dylan compares various wrestlers to HHH
The only person who came to mind for too many TV matches with little or no quality was Kane. Not saying Kane doesn't have decent TV matches. Saying the ratio isn't good. All the weird creepy Kane fans can let this go or put it in the Kane thread. It is totally unfair that you can get away with saying things like "weird creepy Kane fans" when everyone thinks I'm breathing fire when I am anything less than a perfect gentleman. "Oh, that Will, so funny." "Jeez, why is Loss getting so bent out of shape?"

This is why I'm anti-poll: People can vote without explaining their position.

[1991-03-14-NJPW-Big Fight Series] Jushin Liger vs Norio Honaga
I'm glad to see so many singles matches between these two coming, as Liger vs Honaga was one of my favorite matches of 1992. Honaga scores a big upset here, and Saito is at ringside to cheer on his partner. Honaga is not your typical Liger opponent. There's almost no high flying. Everything is just about being an asshole and using very basic, effective wrestling moves. This was really good, and seemed to be more of a setup for things to come. Liger is unhappy about being screwed over and they tease an altercation with a suit-clad Akira Nogami, who is standing at ringside after the match, but nothing comes of it.

[1991-03-11-WWF-Pensacola, FL] Shawn Michaels vs Mr Perfect
This was a good match - much better than their '93 matches. Shawn does a dive that takes out a cameraman and takes a crazy bump on the guardrail in the first few minutes of this. I also really enjoyed the boxing stuff. I don't like how this eventually turned into Mr. Perfect vs The Rockers, with Jannetty hitting Perfect and Perfect attacking him from behind at ringside. Hennig's bumping was also too overdone. But they had the crowd, I have to give them that. The Boss Man runs in and attacks Perfect when he has Shawn pinned. The booking of this is a total mess.

[1991-03-11-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Jake Roberts in the studio
Jake tries to speak candidly about what Martel has put him through. Heenan fakes playing a violin in the background every time he and Vince turn their backs. There are several snakes in the studio on which Jake gives some background. Heenan keeps using Vince as a human shield, which is funny. Jake scares Heenan off, and I must say he has a way of coming across as the real deal, even when in an obviously fake environment. After commercial break, Jake gets over the blindfold. He says all you have to do is listen and those around you will show you the way. He then demonstrates how it will work on a returning Heenan. Heenan then demonstrates too, and ends up with his hands on the snake! Jake is so good in his persona it's ridiculous. This is the best of these studio segments so far.

[1991-03-11-WWF-Primetime Wrestling] Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri in the studio
Savage is hilarious! He has a series of gifts for Warrior - a cowbell because he's about to be put out to pasture, a brand new towel because he's all washed up and a telephone so he can call it quits. Vince asks what Sherri will do if Savage loses and she completely freaks out. Fun stuff. This crowd is no more or less annoying than fans at the Worldwide Arena.

[1991-03-10-WCW-Main Event] Sting vs Larry Zbyszko
This was a terrific short match. Great heat and action. These two match up really well. Sting loses by DQ for refusing to release the scorpion, and after the match, he still won't let go. He keeps tossing referees outside the ring. This followed by the Warrior segment is interesting -- that's twice that the guy who they tried to build around the previous year is used in a much better way.

[1991-03-09-WCW-Saturday Night] Ric Flair and Ranger Ross
Ranger Ross gets out about a half a word before Ric Flair jumps him and beats him up. Flair does one of his furious, maniacal interviews where he's ripping off his clothes and screaming. He's upset about being humiliated (not sure by whom) and hypes the cage match against Sting in the Omni. WCW using national TV time to hype local shows is one of the worst things about the promotion in a long list of bad things.

[1991-03-09-WCW-Saturday Night] Danger Zone: Theodore R. Long
Missy Hyatt interrupts Paul E. before he can get out a question, and Missy plays Tough Journalist. Long says Simmons cost him a lot of money by losing the tag titles. He says when he whipped him with the belt, he was whipping him for the brothers! They cut to an interview the previous week that Missy did with Ron Simmons in order to mock her. Teddy gets a GREAT line ("Once again, you're dippin' in the mustard trying to catch up!") until Ron Simmons scares him off.

[1991-03-09-USWA-Memphis TV] Steve Austin vs Jeff Jarrett
JC the Ice Baby is in Austin's corner and runs his mouth almost the entire time, which is great. Austin seems to improve by the match. About five minutes of good action which sees Jarrett get the win after a couple of really good false finishes. Team Texas hits the ring immediately after the match to do a number on Jarrett, but Eddie Gilbert makes the save.

[1991-03-09-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler
They are doing the big hype job for Lawler finally getting the title shot against Terry Funk. Lawler announces that win, lose or draw, he's planning on taking some much-needed time off after the match. That makes no sense, because if he's champion, he has to stick around and defend the title. Still, this was a great way to make Monday night's match feel special.

This was a phenomenal 7-minute retrospective on Lawler's career, with lots of great clips, both old and recent, capped off with "My Way". This is a tremendous piece of business - one of my favorite things to show up on any yearbook.

[1991-03-09-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Terry Funk / Interview: Terry Funk
Last few minutes of the title change from November. Funk sends in a taped promo to hype the rematch this coming Monday night. Every time Funk thinks of Memphis, a PHLEGM BALL forms in his throat and he tastes rotting flesh. Underprivileged, undernourished and undereducated is how he would describe Memphis fans. They are filthy slimeballs. Also, Jackie Fargo is a pervert and should be in a nursing home. Great stuff! I love how considered Funk seems -- like he's really thought about these things and formed logical conclusions.
