Jerry Lawler
I never said that. I conceded the category to Lawler, but said it should also be noted how important Flair was to Mid Atlantic, and used that as an opportunity to have Dylan talk about the territory switching from a focus on tag teams to singles stars, with Flair being one of the key guys, and the biggest star of them all over time.

[1991-02-24-WCW-Wrestle War '91] Ric Flair & Barry Windham & Larry Zbyszko & Sid Vicious vs Sting & Brian Pillman & Rick & Scott Steiner (War Games)
This looks just as great as it always has. Pillman's performance in particular is one for the ages. I don't think this is quite at the level of '92, but the gap is not huge at all. The first five minutes are my favorite first five minutes in any War Games ever. I don't think stopping the match was the right call unless another team member was willing to surrender on his behalf. El Gigante doing it instead of Sting or the Steiners was silly, but I understand why they did that. Flair/Gigante was doing surprisingly well around the loop, and they needed to keep him involved, but working this match would have totally exposed him. Dusty was clearly trying to recapture the magic of the Crockett era with that main event. It came close, but it just wasn't coming back.

[1991-02-24-WCW-Wrestle War '91] Fabulous Freebirds vs Doom
The Freebirds have a ridiculous number of people accompanying them to the ring, which was the whole reason I wanted to put this entrance on. Diamond Dallas Page, Oliver Humperink (as Big Daddy Dink - and another Dusty guy returning) and quite a few Diamond Dolls. Cut to the finish. Simmons looks awesome, but I worry that poor Jimmy Garvin is dead after those two moves. Reed tries to hit Simmons with brass knucks, but Hayes ducks and Garvin falls on top of Simmons for the pin. The Freebirds win tag titles that they have actually already lost. Reed and Long end up turning on Simmons. It's a good segment, but I'm sad. Doom developed into a hell of a team, and they should have stayed together longer. It seems like he should have, but truth be told, Simmons never clicked as a singles star.

[1991-02-24-WCW-Wrestle War '91] Lex Luger and Nikita Koloff
Nikita is about to present the new U.S. belt to Luger, but decides to hit him in the face instead. The Horsemen, War Games, heel Nikita ... you can tell Dusty's back. Nikita is still bitter about Bash '87.

[1991-02-24-WCW-Wrestle War '91] Lex Luger vs Dan Spivey
Surprisingly good match, with Luger working hard. He's added a lot of muscle since 1990 and is about to enter the phase where he looks ridiculous and slows down, but this is a good outing for sure. Spivey also works hard. I've always liked this show.

[1991-02-24-WCW-Wrestle War '91] Missy Hyatt and Stan Hansen
So begins WCW's pay-per-view running gag of 1991. Missy Hyatt tries to conduct an interview and accidentally runs into Stan Hansen, who screams at her and chases her away. Hilarious!

[1991-02-24-WCW-Main Event] Missy Hyatt and El Gigante
So bad and so awesome. El Gigante won't give Missy an interview until she dances with him. So they have a slow dance to wrap things up. I have seen Missy Hyatt and El Gigante slow dance. Never thought I'd see that, I must say.

[1991-02-23-WCW-Saturday Night] Brian Pillman and the Four Horsemen
Forget what I said about Paul E. putting himself over and Arn's line not making sense. The payoff is pretty clever. I won't spoil it. Let's just say the Horsemen all swarm the ring and attack Pillman while Sting and the Steiners are already in Phoenix for War Games. The Horsemen injure Pillman's shoulder when Flair drops a nasty knee from the middle rope. I'm surprised to see JYD still in the promotion.

[1991-02-23-USWA-Memphis TV] Jeff Jarrett and J.C. Ice
These Memphis segments are killing me in how good they are. This is a promotion on a major hot streak. Jarrett tries to reason with JC Ice, who just laughs him off. He goes through the full biography of Dundee being born in Scotland, shipped to Australia, joining the circus and finally walking seven miles from the airport to Nick Gulas's office to ask for a job. Jarrett is sincere in his delivery and this is extremely well done. I was expecting him to get beat up, but he actually just walked away, believe it or not. That made it more poignant in some ways.

[1991-02-23-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert and Eric Embry
Gilbert and Embry lose to Lawler and Jarrett when Lawler pins Gilbert. Embry blames Gilbert for the loss after the match and ends up attacking him. When Gilbert tries to fight back, Tom Pritchard attacks him from behind. Embry trash talks Lawler, telling him he didn't beat him at all, and lures him back into the ring. I'm sure the Gilbert babyface turn will be great, but I have really loved him as a heel, and I still think Gilbert vs Lawler had another few months of legs as a feud. Oh well.

[1991-02-23-WCW-Power Hour] Danger Zone: Ron Simmons & Teddy Long
Teddy Long is so delightfully obnoxious in showing off his PWI Manager of the Year award. They are teasing a Simmons turn, as Long is talking about partying, "Soul Brother" Butch Reed is absent since he is deciding between a Mercedes and a Rolls Royce, and Simmons would rather talk business. The jobber he is scheduled to face jumps in, the match gets underway and we cut out.

[1991-02-22-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett vs Eddie Gilbert
Some will love the Lawler match, the previous Jarrett match was excellent and this one is really good too. They all feel very distinct as well. Lots of really well done, very basic matwork. I think their previous match was better, but this isn't far behind. JC THE ICE BABY, who has already turned heel in Dallas apparently, runs out and trips Jarrett and holds his foot, but Jarrett still kicks out. Gilbert then hits him with a chain and Jarrett kicks out again, which is kind of a botched moment, more because of the referee and the timekeeper than because of Gilbert and Jarrett. Jamie finally runs in the ring and they summon Awesome Kong (no, not her) to attack Jarrett. He does a couple of splashes on his leg and is about to jump off the top rope when Travis and Dundee makes the save. Kong takes an impressive bump off the top rope for a guy that size. Good stuff, warts and all.

Jeff Jarrett
He is definitely someone who always felt like he was pandering for heat too much, both as a babyface and a heel, in both of the Big Two.

Jeff Jarrett
I'm open to the idea that Jarrett was only good in Memphis, but I wonder how much of that perception is just based on him having an extremely grating personality in the WWF and WCW, not so much on his ring work. I'll admit that the persona made him borderline unbearable at times.
