  2. Terrence Garvin is not much in the ring, but this is inoffensive. Lots of hide-the-chain.
  3. Last minute or so, which sees Misawa debut the Tiger Driver '91. This was a last-minute edit, but I plan on checking this match out in full when I go back through the decade and fill in gaps.
  4. Not as good as their previous match, but still a solid effort. Gary Young really works well with Embry, and he seems to be more motivated than he was in 1990. He pins Embry here after hitting him with a chain.
  5. A brief reprise of the 1990 feud between these guys. Tessa has even been pulled out of mothballs. Tatum, fresh out of prison, is freshly groomed. This is like most of their matches the previous year, and they sort of pretend this feud is still going on even though it's long over. Weird.
  6. Interesting. They shot an angle between Flair and Scott Steiner at the Meadowlands. Flair is in his suit all cleaned up as the Steiners are leaving the building. Flair picks a fight and a shouting match ensues before the glowing mullets of Ricky Morton and Tommy Rich calm them down. Back at the green screen, Flair does a nice promo putting the world title over big. This works in an interesting way - we see how valuable this is to Flair, so it creates a desire from the wrestling fan to see someone take it from him. Well, that's the way it would work if he hadn't just won it back and WCW fans weren't elated about that.
  7. Very good match, but not as good as the 8-man the following year with the Dangerous Alliance in February. This one had some nice moments, but it was pretty crowded. I think there were too many people doing too many things for anything to really stand out. However, the one thing that did stand out, surprisingly enough, was the Rick Steiner-Sid Vicious mini-war, which believe it or not made me want a singles match between those two guys. I was surprised at how perfectly competent Sid was in this match, but overall, this was a collection of spots and sequences you've seen a million times. No finish after a 15+ minute match feels like sort of a ripoff, but that's a pattern with 1991 WCW TV.
  8. Sting is all focused on "shaking things up" and says the phrase about a half dozen times in a minute. I will never get used to Flair's hairstyle.
  9. This is incredibly misogynistic and slimy talk from Paul E. at the gym. Funny stuff.
  10. We join just before Tugboat's entrance. Hogan eliminating Tugboat is a big thing, and it was also hyped in a big way in the pre-show hype. Martel is the marathon man, and his elimination gets a big pop. Hogan is left with Brian Knobs and John Tenta, with Jimmy Hart at ringside. To be surrounded by friends at such an exciting time. Wow, the Nastys left WCW and showed up here quickly. Hogan's first Hulk-up is really shitty, and the second one is even worse. Earthquake is great in feeding him spots, though. Hogan wins the Rumble.
  11. Last few minutes. Dustin is having his leg worked over and Virgil accidentally nails DiBiase. He apologies, and DiBiase starts beating him up. Dusty does a job on his way out of the promotion. Virgil finally has enough of DiBiase's bullying after the match and pops him to a HUGE pop from the crowd. DiBiase (and the bookers) really deserve a ton of credit for getting so much out of this feud.
  12. Last few minutes. This crowd is on fire. Sherri, who has completely changed her look from earlier in the night, comes out to interfere and ends up taking a bump into the ring, and gets thrown outside. Savage breaks the scepter over his head before they take off, then Slaughter pins Warrior to win the title. The crowd is stunned. I am sad that we didn't get Savage attacking Warrior with the light fixture. I was thinking that was close to the finish, but it wasn't I guess. And with that, the top two WM matches are set. This was a ballsy title change, I will give them that.
  13. Sherri drags Gene Okerlund out to the interview era and wants to speak to the Warrior. She tries flirting her way into Warrior's good graces, going pretty far by WWF standards of the time, kissing him and even strongly suggesting that she'll give him a blowjob if he'll give Savage a title shot. Still a woooowww moment. Savage is in the dressing room blowing a gasket. He runs out to the ring to sell the embarrassment and this is awesome. I love how they've been able to sustain the momentum of this program even with Savage letting an injury heal.
  14. Excellent match. One of the better WWF tags. There were some really clever spots in this. I love the slingshot/sunset flip combo finish, and Shawn's counter to the belt clothesline. There are a few things that I noticed during the match that were minor flaws, but I forgot what they were as the match progressed, which makes them pretty meaningless. Give them credit for thinking outside the box and coming up with something creative that tore the house down.
  15. Lawler is wearing a cardigan sweater with no undershirt, which is a pretty daring fashion choice. Lawler says one day the Fabs are going to get smart and get rid of Cornette. Lawler takes exception to the Fabs being the best Memphis team ever -- that would be him and Dundee. The titles are on the line on Monday night, and Jeff Jarrett will be in their corner to watch Cornette. Where do I buy?
  16. Funk has put out another bounty - another $50,000 on Jeff Jarrett! Funk doesn't want to face anyone! They are coming after him next. Seeing Cornette in the Memphis studio doing his thing is really fun.
  17. I'm not sure what it is about facing each other that makes these two get so stoic, but it's what happened here. It's a very good match, but it's still a disappointing match. They mostly work holds and work them well, which is fine, but it doesn't seem like anything big is at stake here, which is a weird thing to say about a match where the Triple Crown changed hands. I don't want to oversell this. It's not a bad match, and it's something just about any two other wrestlers could be very proud of. I just don't know where the big personalities go when these two lock up.

This is about Bobby Eaton. No WWF-ing this thread.
  19. Despite watching as much wrestling as anyone alive in the past few years, I agree with this. I have my pick for GOAT, but I also acknowledge that it could potentially one day change. It would take a lot to make that happen, but it's not impossible. Rounding out my top ten or top twenty would be the harder part. I look at the GOAT lists and projects as a snapshot of opinion at the time, not necessarily something etched in stone that can never be reconsidered. As long as we approach it that way, I think it's fun and produces interesting things worth reading. The Smarkschoice poll wasn't great because of the final list as much as it was great because of the discussion and debate that led to a final list.
  20. It seems like people are being a little too tough on Jerry. He has praised quite a few artists of different genres in this thread. He just has his pick of who he thinks is a cut above the rest, which we likely all have. I don't see him writing off hip hop or jazz as much as I just see him explaining where he's coming from. I don't agree with his opinion necessarily, but just because he has an "obvious" answer doesn't mean he came to that conclusion in an obvious way.
  21. khawk summed it up well. The WWF had the deeper roster, but JCP at its peak had the deeper lineup.
  22. Very good match! I wasn't sure what to expect, so this exceeded my expectations for sure. They brawl into the Sportatorium crowd and back into the ring. Embry is a really expressive wrestler, both through body language and facial expressions, especially when he's selling. There's not much here in the way of wrestling moves (although Gary Young does have an excellent high knee), but the match is so well crafted that it doesn't really matter. Embry gets the win, which earns him a shot at the Texas title.
  23. This has always been one of my favorite matches. A total war, with Taue covered in blood and the two hating each others' guts by this point. They swing chairs and are out to really hurt each other instead of winning a match. Taue gets a hard time, but he works his ass off and puts on a great performance here. All Japan's version of the lucha brawl.

  25. Gotta love the awesome Santo mini-movie between the matches. This was an outstanding match. I've seen this before, but I've never loved it this much. They worked a really bloody, dramatic brawl that is every bit as good as the Satanico and Dandy brawls in 1990. Everything is a total struggle, and the match is filled with crowd-pleasing spots. There's a great mixture of good wrestling with the really intense brawling. Early MOTYC. 1991 is bringing the match quality in a big way thus far.
