General thoughts on 1990
I'd have to think about it more, but without going back through anything, just off the top of my head: 1 - El Dandy 2 - El Satanico 3 - Ric Flair 4 - Yoshiaki Fujiwara 5 - Jumbo Tsuruta 6 - Lightning Kid 7 - Bobby Eaton 8 - Nobuhiko Takada 9 - Mitsuharu Misawa 10 - Jeff Jarrett Lawler would be somewhere in the top 25, but below Genichiro Tenryu, Stan Hansen, Riki Choshu, Ricky Morton, Shinya Hashimoto, Tsuyoshi Kikuchi, Toshiaki Kawada, Kenta Kobashi, Masa Fuchi, Angel Azteca, Brian Pillman, Rip Rogers and maybe others. I just don't like his matches as a heel AT ALL.

GOAT music debate stuff
I'm totally opposite of my views on wrestling in my views on music, where I am blissfully dense and possibly a little shallow. Synthesizers are more interesting than "real" instruments. Bob Dylan is boring. Can we talk about New Order?

I moved the music talk to Pro Wrestling Mostly.

I'm going to split this off and send it to Pro Wrestling Mostly, but I'm finding this conversation amusing, and encourage you all to continue it.

Does a match need to go a certain length?
My problems with it: (1) Shawn Michaels telling HHH to end it when nothing really bad had happened yet (2) The weird preoccupation with busting HHH open hardaway (3) Shawn Michaels making strange facial expressions in the corner (4) Me not being clear on why Shawn superkicked Taker into the pedigree, and why he had that reaction afterward, and the announcers not explaining it (5) The match being built almost entirely around talking (6) Shawn Michaels

Does a match need to go a certain length?
I suppose the answer is that yes, it does have to go a certain length -- long enough to get across their point. Great matches that last less than 10 minutes are rare, but they aren't impossible.

[1991-01-12-WCW-Saturday Night] Paul E. Dangerously and Missy Hyatt
Missy Hyatt has paid Alexandra York to use her computer and see how long it's going to take her to beat Paul E. at the Clash. Paul E. tears into Missy to a point where she runs off in tears. He starts to do the same to Alexandra York, and changes his tune immediately when Michael Wallstreet comes out.

[1991-01-12-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Fabulous Ones
The Fabs are out celebrating the tag title win and Lawler comes out for his interview. Lawler gets a few words out before Cornette hits him with the racket from behind and the Fabs work him over, including a really nasty spike piledriver on the floor. I think that's Jerry Lynn helping Lawler up. Cornette immediately heels himself while Stan Lane wears Lawler's crown. They immediately clarify that they are here to collect the bounty. He explains his actions in that typically great Jim Cornette way, and they get in a few digs at fellow heel Eddie Gilbert. He calls "Terry" and says he's two for two. Eddie Marlin gets in Cornette's face and promises him Lawler is done. Cornette says he's not the same guy Lawler used to make fun of 8 years ago -- he's played with the big boys and the Fabs aren't to be messed with. This guy is too good to be stuck working Memphis. Fuck a WCW.

[1991-01-12-USWA-Memphis TV] Fabulous Ones vs Dirty White Boy & Doug Gilbert
Highlights from Mid South Coliseum of the Fabs beating DWB and Doug Gilbert to regain the tag team titles in their first match back in the promotion. Looking at gates around this time, this looks to be somewhere in the middle of where they normally were, but the return didn't draw as much as you'd think, at least not the first time out.

[1991-01-12-WWF-Superstars] Ted DiBiase & Virgil vignette
DiBiase cuts a promo after a squash that's pretty good, actually. He wants to make a point that he can do anything with his money. He throws his money on the mat, slaps Virgil, then commands him to pick up the money. Virgil teases snapping, and the crowd is with him, until DiBiase whispers something in his ear about his family. Virgil slowly picks up the money as DiBiase laughs. DiBiase is tremendous. Great stuff.

[1991-01-12-WWF-Superstars] Update: The Ultimate Deadline
Wow, they are really hyping up Iraq's deadline to leave Kuwait as the Ultimate Deadline. This is so unbelievably disgusting that I don't really know how to react. I'm not even offended. I am too shocked that this stuff actually saw the light of day to be offended.

[1991-01-11-AJW] Aja Kong & Bison Kimura vs Bull Nakano & Kyoko Inoue (Hair vs Hair)
There were some really sloppy moments in this, especially from Kyoko, who I think is actively bad in this match. But the match layout and drama overcame most of that, and we still have a very good match. The Bull/Aja showdowns are epic. With the haircutting and general chaos, this feels like an 80s Dump Matsumoto match in many ways.

The Steiner Brothers
The pre-match video, on the other hand, is an all-time classic.

The Steiner Brothers
I was always a little surprised at some of the love for that match. It had major dream match appeal at the time, but I never really liked it.

I just had one, but it wasn't taped. I'm sorry you missed it. I cut quite the pace.

Wrestling Culture Podcast Episode 35!
Yes, Funk's Grill. The offshoot of that where Cornette and Funk always acted like best of friends in front of each other and badmouthed each other elsewhere every chance they got was great.

Bret Hart vs. Ric Flair
Could you explain what you think is important in a wrestler? If you feel like you have before, could you point me to where that was?

Does a match need to go a certain length?
If a match feels too short, it's too short. Sometimes, wrestlers can do a lot with a little time. Sometimes, wrestlers have a lot of time and can't do much. There's no definite answer here.

Your Personal GOAT "Bar"
We serve drinks around the clock at my GOAT bar. My GOAT pick wouldn't have it any other way. But I have to make sure he has funds before he orders a damn thing to drink, or else I'll go bankrupt quickly. Every drink counts, of course, since I only have five or so patrons. The other four are there to recognize that they are reasonable choices someone could make to be the guest of honor at their own GOAT bar, but not really because I would let them be the guest of honor in mine. I know better. If I hear about other potential patrons doing cool things, I'll occasionally let them start drinking here. But I need to see evidence of them doing said cool things over a long period of time in a variety of places and with a variety of people. Small, skewed, favorable sampling that lacks context doesn't get anyone an invite. That's how we roll at my GOAT bar. Business was better than at any bar in history in the 1980s. We stayed open longer than we should have, and probably needed new decor and management eventually, but people occasionally like to pretend that us getting a little set in our ways not aging gracefully somehow makes other bars better, despite being voted the best neighborhood bar 8 years in a row! It's not our fault we have the market covered and people got a little tired of our cocktails. Just because you've had the drink a million times doesn't mean it's not as good. It just means that you have a drinking problem. Still, go check out the bar that is only open three months out of the year. Or go check out the one that is popular with local guests, but that out-of-towners never really get into. You may even want to check out the one that serves Canadian beer, where they go all out for holidays and special occasions, but have really lazy bartenders who just go through the motions during slow times. When you get that out of your system, my GOAT bar will still be open and we'll still serve the same cocktails we always have. Other bars may have better bartenders or more variety on the drink menu, and some may even serve food. But eventually, everyone comes back here when they want to get laid or vent to their co-workers after a long week.
