  1. My memory was that the main event was worth the price of admission, and Luger/Windham, the MX match, and the Road Warriors vs Varsity Club were all fun at the very least. Luger/Windham was a match in particular that probably would have been GREAT with 10 more minutes. They had a lot of ideas they were cramming into a 10-minute match that didn't have time to play out. Luger was very motivated to put on a good performance and try new things.

  3. If Bill Watts had any chance of taking over the world, it would have had to have involved staying on TBS, and Vince never selling the timeslot to Crockett.
  4. Dave sold each and every chop in the Flair/Steamboat match, which was tremendous. I haven't listened to the podcast yet, but will do so, as I have it downloaded. That finish is one of the smartest of the era, because they were signaling to their fans that they were past the Dusty era. I wouldn't be surprised if Dave was the one who suggested it.
  5. There's nothing wrong with Bret not aiming to steal the show. But I think a wrestler rated at the level of a Bret Hart should be someone we don't find taking nights off very often, if ever. It's fine for your average wrestler, but Bret is supposed to be better than that.
  6. This Fujinami performance feels like something is missing, like he's filling a role anyone competent could have filled. Vader feels like the more interesting wrestler. I wouldn't say he's carrying this match, but he is definitely the one making it something special. 90s Fujinami hasn't been terribly impressive on yearbooks so far, not that there's been a ton of it or anything. But I think he was just past his peak, and he didn't have Vader's charisma. I enjoyed this match a lot, but I enjoyed it because of Vader. He really got the crowd into this match in a big way and let Fujinami punch him in the eye until he started bleeding. The crowd really bought the nearfalls and seemed a little deflated when Vader won. Very good match.
  7. So glad the Warrior title run is coming to a close. I always thought the Warrior bombing might have been a little bit of an overstatement considering how over I remembered him being as a kid, but after watching the 1990 Yearbook, that is clearly no myth. The guy was over, but did not click as the champion. Knowing he's about to drop the title makes him slightly more tolerable here. I know he didn't stick around past summer, but in the long run, he would have been better served as the #2 babyface anyway.
  8. This match has a questionable structure and Funk no sells three consecutive piledrivers, but this is still an awesome spectacle in spite of all of that. Funk just creates such a scene at the Sportatorium and gets the crowd riled up into such a frenzy that I still think the positives overcome the flaws. This is probably on par with their 1981 stuff. This is a hate-filled brawl that really feels dangerous for anyone who gets too close to the action, which is an element you don't really see much anymore.
  9. Because Flair told them to do that without clarifying his point. They were only doing what they were asked to do.
  10. Super match with a very hot crowd. Gilbert takes some impressive stooge bumps early on in this. The story here is that Gilbert's arm is useless from Jarrett's arm work, and Jarrett's leg is useless from Gilbert's leg work. So they are two wounded animals duking it out. Gilbert loosens Jarrett's boots before applying a figure four, which is a really cool touch, especially when he pulls on the laces to stop Jarrett from reversing the figure four. That's some Grade A detail. There are all sorts of cool spots you don't see every day. Both guys punching each other simultaneously and falling down was great, as was Eddie's hobbling around after the figure four was finally reversed. Jarrett pins Gilbert after intercepting a chain and punching him with it. He takes the Southern title to boot, but there's a Dusty finish with the title going back to Gilbert after a reverse decision when the referee finds the chain. This is just awesome stuff with a wild crowd. The best match so far.
  11. Paul E. tells Missy to dress like a lady at the Clash for their arm wrestling contest, instead of what she really is. Missy slaps him across the face and tells him to wear that! I remember getting a weird enjoyment out of this feud.
  12. Michael Hayes as Uncle Sam is amusing. Good to see War Games coming back.
  13. Lawrence Taylor in WCW is so forgotten. He's going to neutralize Paul E. Dangerously, and he will be in Lex Luger's corner in a football match against Curtis Hughes. I hate it when WCW does so much hype for a house show match on TBS.
  14. Lex On The Level made me laugh when they were running down the daily schedule.
  15. Rogers wants Pillman in a match where falls don't count in the first five minutes because it better suits his training regimen.
  16. The story here was that Rip wanted a match where falls wouldn't count for the first five minutes. He argues that this is the reason for his losing streak -- it simply takes him a long time to warm up. Interesting that they announce a Flair/Pillman match at the Clash. I never knew that was the original plan. I thought this was an excellent match. It's really the best of all the Rip Rogers matches including the end of '90. I think they were trying to give Rogers a visual fall at the 5-minute mark that wouldn't count because of his own big mouth, but the referee blew the spot. Pillman jumps off the top of the entrance in a great spot! Pillman feuds with the Horsemen and flirts with a main event spot over the next few months, so I'm not sure how wise it was to have him so competitive with Rip Rogers here, but at the same time, the match is really good.
  17. DiBiase is in his Million Dollar Man gear while wearing a cowboy hat, which really makes him look like a total caricature. He gets his boot dirty and forces Virgil to clean it up. Ted is great here.
  18. Cutesy promo hyping the Rumble. It's interesting that even by 1991 when the gimmick had been established, they still went to such lengths to explain and sell it. Hogan feels like a guy already being subtly repositioned as the #1 guy. Brother Love specifically mentions Tugboat being there for him in a tough time, and Hogan doesn't really give a shit, not surprisingly.
  19. Savage basically promises interference in Warrior/Slaughter at the Royal Rumble. Interestingly, they are already making excuses for Warrior dropping the title before he even gets to the Rumble, talking about the intense pressure he is under as champ. Anytime that talk starts in the WWF with a babyface champ, you know the title is about to change.
  20. They replayed the same update that was at the end of the 1990 Yearbook.
  21. This was a match Dave saw live on a tour of Japan and gave ****1/2. I think this may have aired on TV, but since the handheld was available, I wanted to capture that version to see if we could see what he saw. Also, AJW tends to edit things on TV sometimes, so I didn't want to take any chances. I actually thought the matwork in the first half was the best part of this. After that, it felt like they were doing too much and the match felt overworked. They obviously went too long, which Kyoko probably wasn't ready for, but I still thought this was an interesting glimpse at what she could do with this much time at this point. Not really a bad match, but not really good either. Lots of big plusses and big negatives combined to make a really long "just there" match. It reminds me in some ways of Kawada/Kobashi from 1990.
  22. Speaking of style things, I wish just once an AJW match could start with a collar and elbow tie up instead of an offensive move and an Irish whip. I wish there was more feeling out sometimes.
  23. Meh, that's just part of the joshi heel style. Weapons, interferance, etc... been that way for decades. I recognize that. I still hate it.
  24. "Brett Hart" is Barry Horowitz.
  25. The last two Classics episodes have a pair of tags -- Liger/Samurai vs Otani/Kanemoto from 1/20/97, and Liger/Samurai vs Jericho/Kanemoto from 1/29. I thought the first one was good enough to make a yearbook. I think for '98, the answer to finding more complete footage is in Samurai TV and DirecTV specials. I will probably include a few short clips for good measure, because it helps paint a more complete picture. But yes, it is indeed frustrating. At some point, maybe we'll get a Classics run that targets the last few years of the decade.
