  1. The Bobby Eaton singles run officially begins, with his first big match against the champ. Eaton gives his usual inspired performance, and is motivated to take some big bumps. Sting really feels like a guy going through the motions here, which is unfortunate, because this is exactly the type of opponent he needed more matches against on TV -- someone willing and able to make him look great. Eaton goes after Sting's leg, which I'm excited to see since leg work is not something we've seen him do on the yearbook. And ... suddenly the match becomes a total WTF when audio of a Black Scorpion promo accompanied by weird music starts playing over the loud speaker. Sting is distracted by this and accidentally throws Bobby Eaton over the top rope and gets disqualified. Two anonymous job guys hit the ring and start attacking Sting, but he neutralizes them, all while the Black Scorpion continues his promo. Post-match, Jim Ross interviews Lex Luger to ask his thoughts on this. Luger points out that Sting can't handle this alone, and from here on out, he has help. Nice touch, but they never followed up on this. I have no idea what to say about this.
  2. I LOVE the theme music Arn was using at this point. I don't think I've mentioned that before. Pretty stiff match with Arn gnawing away at Taylor's arm. The tone is established right away when Taylor slaps Arn after he gets a little talkative during a rope break. Taylor does a few things that bug me (why do a cool move like the jawbreaker twice?), but gives an inspired performance overall. This ends with a slugfest to set up a rematch. Very intense and hard-fought. The kind of 10-minute WCW TV title match I really miss.
  3. Hansen and Paul E. together are a riot. They've already started hyping the bullrope match for Starrcade.
  4. Another great Eddie Gilbert promo. He's about to buy Graceland. Terry Funk doesn't need his help to beat Lawler. He hypes the barbed wire match on Monday night in another tremendous promo.
  5. Even though they've been feuding for months, I think the Lawler/Gilbert match has never felt more fresh than it does right now. He hypes an upcoming coward waves the flag match against Jeff Jarrett. Great, great interview.
  6. Lawler is in Philly, so this week's promo is done outside to cover for his absence. Funk and Eddie Gilbert may have won the title, but Funk didn't do it by himself. He references that Funk will be in Japan for 21 days. He promises to get Funk in the ring in a way where Gilbert can't interfere. He has double duty on Monday night. Lawler and Dundee are teaming against The Internationals on Monday night, where the winner of the fall must leave the USWA for six months. Then in the main event, Lawler faces Gilbert in a barbed wire match, which got ****3/4 in a fan report in the WON. Oh how I wish we had that. Classic promo.
  7. Last few minutes of good action, which sees Funk win the USWA title. I'll never complain about Funk beating anyone, but I wish he would have been in the studio every week while holding the title. As he previously promised, Eddie Gilbert interferes and distracts Lawler. Eddie Marlin holds Gilbert outside the ring to keep him from interfering, but the damage is done, as Funk socks Lawler with a chain to get the win.
  8. We start with Bill Dundee coming out. I love that he cuts promos on gas prices. This is incredibly xenophobic and mildly racist toward Middle Easterners, but it works.
  9. A super bumping team like the Orient Express are really the perfect team to feud with the LOD. Tanaka does the 360 spin bump off of a lariat, and does a really high angle bump off a hiptoss from Animal. Add in his flat back bumping off of simple moves like the press slam and back body drop and it's an impressive performance. Animal and Hawk seem to be scaling back their aggression, which had to be something at Vince's direction, which is what drags this match down. It's still fun, but it's a shame, because the OX were game, and this could have been really excellent if the Road Warriors were in their usual role as world beaters. Demolition attack the Roadies when they're about to win the match. It seems like they could have done that after the finish. The beatdown continues, even after a commercial break. I do like the visual of three masked hitmen swarming the ring and attacking them, but I'm not used to seeing the Road Warriors this vulnerable, and I'm not really a fan of it, even if the beatdown is well done (if you could consider a series of double axehandles to be really menacing).
  10. Mr. Perfect has formed The Perfect Team with all three members of Demolition in preparation for Survivor Series. Demolition wear their masks during the interview, I guess to make them look more evil. I do think Bryan Adams could have eventually become a decent promo had he been well-coached. Three weeks later, Brother Love is still selling the DDT. That's dedication.
  11. I wish it had been in Mid South Coliseum, but I'm thrilled that we at least get one full-length match between these two. I thought this was a fantastic match. They cut a good pace and Lawler goes after Gilbert aggressively. Gilbert's second, whoever he is, eats a baseball slide from Lawler just because. One thing I will point out is that while I wouldn't rank Gilbert ahead of Lawler as a performer, I think as far as 1990 goes, Gilbert performs the heel Lawler act better than Lawler himself. There's talking on the house mic, and there's chain hiding, but there's also a much better ebb and flow to the match, and there's more of a sense of satisfaction for those who want to see Gilbert take his share of lumps. He mixes in the Lawler tricks with a mean streak that works really well, and some great offense like the DDT, bulldog and all sorts of punches, jabs and fistdrops. He works over Lawler's neck to build to a piledriver, which is really his own revenge after Lawler gets him with one fairly early in the match, which Gilbert sells like crazy. Yes, it's used in a manner that it doesn't end the match, but it is a key point in the match and they protect the move. There are some great two-counts and some great referee-out-of-position spots that really bring the heat to a fever pitch. Cactus Jack tries to interfere for Gilbert after a ref bump, but his interference backfires and Lawler gets the win. Gilbert and Cactus argue about Cactus's screw-up after the match, which sets the stage for their 1991 feud. This match really reflects well on both guys, and I'm now convinced that 1990-1991 was Eddie Gilbert's peak as a wrestler. Low-end MOTYC. I'm glad we have at least one standout match for two guys that have been so heavily featured, with the potential for another standout for Lawler against Funk to follow.
  12. I love how ZANY this disc is. So much awesomeness here. Yes, this is insane. I think Satanico was thinking of sacrificing Ponzona inside a church.
  13. Best interview of all time. He doesn't have to tell you SHIT.
  14. It's really funny to see these guys feuding these late, and after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
  15. Has anyone here ever dropped acid while watching Memphis wrestling? I would imagine the experience is very similar to watching this match. Pogo's sunglasses-wearing manager takes a piledriver on a ringside table and Pogo takes off both of his cowboy boots and starts windmill socking Onita, as if he's some sort of possessed Eddie Marlin. The crowd really takes to Pogo as the ultimate villain, and Onita as their hero. This was a borderline selection that I'm really glad we kept. Each Onita match in 1990 has really produced something very different and notable. This has the feel of Atsushi Onita fighting off the monster in the famous final scene of a slasher flick. It's a brilliant match. The I-love-you-I-hate-you handshake and slaps while terrible music plays them out is awesome. Good fun for the family. It's really fascinating to watch Onita establish his stardom and legacy throughout the yearbook.
  16. Ric Flair makes an offer to Teddy Long. The Horsemen want a rematch at Starrcade. The challenge for the Clash: one person from each team faces each other, and if the Horsemen win, they get a shot at Starrcade. Flair is willing to put up $50,000. Long scoffs, so Flair ups it to $100,000. Long laughs at that as well, so Flair ups it to $200,000. Long laughs at that too and walks away. Later in the show, Flair ups the offer to $250,000, and Long still says it's not a lot of money compared to the tag titles. Flair is getting furious and finally makes it $500,000. "That's worth more than the neighborhood you grew up in." Long still says no. Long says he has a real offer for Flair a little later. Later, Long makes a counteroffer. He doesn't want Flair's money. He wants his limo and his yacht, so he can change the name to TEDDY LONG'S SOUL MACHINE. Flair says no way -- that's his stuff, not Horseman stuff. Long says take it or leave it. Flair plays hardball later on and re-offers $500,000. Long again says take it or leave it, and he's out of here if Flair won't take the offer. Flair is livid, but takes the deal. The match is made. Since Flair was going over anyway, he should have put up something like his hair to really guarantee a big TV rating. A Clash built around the possibility of Flair getting his head shaved would have been huge. This is well done, but I HATE THAT THIS IS ALL HAPPENING IN FRONT OF A GREEN SCREEN.
  17. Paul E. Dangerously walks into a bar and is looking for a problem solver. He finds Motor City Madman in a bar and pays him a lot of money to take out Lex Luger. Not sure why Paul E. was targeting Luger, and not sure why Luger couldn't just face a member of the Horsemen at the Clash. That said, Paul E. is excellent in this.
  18. I'd also like to look at Music City TV for '99. Wolfie D was pretty heavily featured. OVW started TV blocks in July, so I'd like to go through those and find interesting stuff as well. If anyone watched OVW at the time and has any recommendations, I'd be interested in hearing about it. Are there any other indies that had TV with semi-notable regulars?

  20. I would suggest throwing 1-2-3 Kid in there right before Razor Ramon. I'd also add Bret Hart. They never feuded, but they had three available matches between 1989 and 1991 (that I'm aware of).
