[1990-10-27-NWA-Halloween Havoc] Ric Flair & Arn Anderson vs Doom
This was a well-worked match, but it was also tone deaf. They had the crowd into it by the end, but I'm not sure making Doom the de facto babyfaces was the best way to work this match. Starrcade was much better, I think because it felt more like what a heel versus heel match should feel like. I don't fault them too much. They had to work their way to that. So this is part of the journey, not the end destination. There's plenty to like here. But it just doesn't really fit into the feud.

Things guys that you like do that you hate
It's not a "you wouldn't do that in a real fight" thing. It's a "why even do that in a fake fight?" thing. It looks sloppy, and the move is forever ruined.

Things guys that you like do that you hate
Something a very casual fan friend of mine pointed out: What is the value in picking up the guy in Go2Sleep? Why not just knee him in the face? I had no answer, so now that's a thing CM Punk does that annoys me.

[1990-10-27-NWA-Halloween Havoc] Sting and the Black Scorpion
Sting does a rambling interview and can barely say anything right. The Black Scorpion interrupts him. He steals a female crew member and makes her disappear. One of the worst segments ever on PPV and to top it off, the PPV version of this show included credits for the company that did the magic tricks!

[1990-10-27-NWA-Halloween Havoc] Midnight Express vs Ricky Morton & Tommy Rich
I love this match! It's not quite a great match. But I love this match. Sadly, it's the end of the road for the Midnight Express. But what a way to go. Ricky Morton and Bobby Eaton seemed to know that and went completely balls out for 15 minutes. Eaton took some big bumps on the floor, did a Rocket Launcher from the top rope to the ramp, ate a headscissors on the floor, and they worked some pretty fast-paced sequences. The crowd was really into the MX, which shows how much of a loss this team as a unit was to the promotion. There's an unspoken finality to all of this. Tommy Rich is barely involved and I think it works best that way. This was about the Midnight Express vs Rock & Roll Express feud coming to an end on the national stage, and he was just there as a warm body since Robert Gibson was injured. I really want to hear Childs' thoughts on this when he gets to it, because Bobby Eaton and Ricky Morton leave it all in the ring.

[1990-10-27-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Southern Boys and Jim Cornette
Dennis Brent announces that the Southern Boys are going to receive an Outstanding Achievement Award from the editors of Wrestling Wrap-Up for some unclear reason. They keep emphasizing how popular they are, and how much time they spend in hospitals, and this is just total bullshit. They show a clip from Worldwide of the Southern Boys upsetting the MX in one of their first televised appearances in the territory a few months back. The match looks pretty good and may be worth seeking out in full for the Errata. Cornette interrupts and is furious. He is really fired up. Steve Armstrong finally shoves him down to the ground. Cornette is on fire!

[1990-10-27-USWA-Memphis TV] Jeff Jarrett vs Danny Davis
Babyface match. Before the match, Davis vows that he's going to keep it clean, but he's going to take the fight to Jarrett. Ken Wayne does commentary at ringside, as Davis' former partner. They mention that Davis has taken Joey Maggs under his wing lately. There's some fun stuff to come based around that, so wait for it. These two have a really nice match while it lasts. Jarrett was really in a groove at this point in time. Doug Gilbert trips Danny Davis, giving Jarrett a technical loss. This creates an opening for Gilbert to attack Jarrett from behind with a chair. Gilbert paints a yellow streak down Jarrett's back. Ken Wayne leaves and does not help. After the commercial break, Wayne explains that he had to go to the bathroom. Jarrett promises revenge.

[1990-10-27-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Bill Dundee / Jamie Dundee promo
We start with a clip from MSC of Jamie Dundee getting the win for his team in a six-man tag team with his dad and Jerry Lawler. Eddie Gilbert runs out as soon as the match is over. They handcuff Bill to the ring ropes. Meanwhile, Tojo Yammamoto throws powder in Jamie's eyes and all the heels beat the shit out of him and leaving him a bloody mess. They sell this as a hardcore angle. A somber Dundee is back at the studio, wearing sunglasses and all dressed in black. He vows revenge. We cut to a tape of Jamie and Bill at home. Jamie has stitches in his mouth, but he too vows revenge. He wants the little "slant-eyed Jap" to get out here. He's furious and wants everyone to come out. The studio is in a stunned silence. This is great! On a side note, I think what I got from this is that Dick Murdoch, Chris Champion and Lou Fabiano are a stable, managed by Tojo Yammamoto and Downtown Bruno. Wow.

[1990-10-27-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert vs Jeff Jarrett / Interview: Eddie Gilbert
The finish of what looks to be a fantastic match from Mid South Coliseum. Don't worry, there's Gilbert/Jarrett in full still ahead on this and the 1991 Yearbook, and it doesn't disappoint, so brace yourselves. Jarrett is covered in blood and is punching the hell out of Gilbert. The ring fills up to pull them apart. Back at the studio, a bandaged Gilbert is out for an interview. He thinks Lawler's mystery opponent on Monday night is finally going to result in a new USWA champ. He does a great interview to get over his own credibility, and is very serious in his delivery. He is putting his hair on the line against the Southern title on Monday night. He is temporarily drowned out by a "We don't wanna hear it" chant. This may be the best Eddie Gilbert interview ever, which is really saying something. He wraps up by accusing Jerry Jarrett of giving Dave Brown bonuses to say nice things about his son and Jerry Lawler. Dave Brown is NOT happy with this and tears into him in his Dave Brown way.

[1990-10-27-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler
Lawler talks about the rough travel schedule of a wrestler. In a moment that makes me love the yearbook concept, he talks about an upcoming show in Philadelphia he's working to prove his point, and we will have footage from that show waiting on us. He's here to plug his new hotline. 1-900-654-5464. $1.50 for the first minute, $1.00 each additional minute, in case you're interested. Hotlines in general were the scam of the year, I suppose.

[1990-10-27-WWF-Superstars] Update: Rick Rude suspended indefinitely!
Jack Tunney suspends Rick Rude indefinitely for the comments he made about Boss Man's mother. Yeaaahhh ... that's a ridiculous way to write him out of the WWF. Bobby Heenan cuts a pleading promo asking for Tunney to reconsider, and in a funny moment, he thinks the cameras have stopped rolling and completely turns off the pleading. The real story was that Rude was being advertised on house shows, even though he was injured and couldn't appear. This was back in the day when purposely lying about upcoming cards was commonplace. Rude felt since his name was being used to draw the house, he should still be paid as if he worked the show. Vince disagreed, so Rude quit.

[1990-10-27-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Jake Roberts & Rick Martel
Rick Martel wants to apologize to Jake for what happened. He is saying the right things, but is so insincere -- I like how they played this. I've heard Jake talk about how heels apologizing for bad things is guaranteed heat, so I'm betting that was his idea. He came with a cane for Jake. Blind Jake works for me, as it's something almost no one else in wrestling could have pulled off in a compelling way, and it's amazing to watch him work the crowd. Brother Love taunts him, knowing he can't see. He hands him the cane and Jake swings it at his head and just misses, but Love's glasses fly off. He then cuts a pretty awe-inspiring promo, with a simple but poignant line: an eye for an eye. Martel is back out to taunt Jake and is such an asshole. He then pokes him in the eye and runs off. Jake ends up DDTing Brother Love since he's in his reach, thinking it's Martel, and the crowd pops huge. His glasses fall off and his eyeball is completely white. Freaky stuff, and an amazing segment.

[1990-10-26-NWA-Power Hour] Louisville Slugger: Nasty Boys
Check out Cornette's jacket! Where does one even find something that ugly? They show the Nasty Boys attack on the Steiners at the contract signing again. Decent interview to set up Havoc. This is capped off by Gordon Solie going over the PPV lineup. Why did everything Ole Anderson put together seem so small time, even when it was good?

[1990-10-26-EMLL] Atlantis vs Kung Fu
Just the third fall, as the match wasn't really that special, but it's Atlantis in a mask match, so I thought it should go on. Atlantis is pretty dominant here, and there's not as much heat as you'd expect for a mask match. I guess no one cared about Kung Fu. I'm being a little hard on this, as the action isn't terrible or anything. But after the last three consecutive matches on the set, it doesn't look all that impressive. Atlantis wins with the backbreaker and Kung Fu loses his mask.

[1990-10-26-EMLL] El Dandy vs El Satanico
It's really cool that they worked a bloody brawl. I wasn't expecting that, since they have the hair match later in the year. But it's also unfair to *just* call it that, as it's far more dimensional than a typical brawl. There is also some great wrestling that builds to the brawling, and they go back to flying and working holds in pivotal parts of the match, when the brawling alone can't get the job done. So in that respect, the match gets over both the feud and the wrestling style. I loved Satanico's moment of desperation where he faked a groin injury to win the first caida, and also the payback of the second fall going to Dandy when Satanico gets overzealous and accidentally pokes the referee in the eye, and just when he has victory in sight to boot. The anger only seems to drive Satanico to find new ways to torture Dandy as the match comes to a close. He throws all of his skill and dirty tricks at him, but Dandy manages to rally a comeback. This is as fundamentally strong, dramatic and hate-filled as anything I've seen all year, and it's a pleasure to watch the two best luchadores of 1990 do their thing. Dandy gets the win, but it doesn't seem like the feud is settled by any means. Bring on the hair match!

[1990-10-25-UWF-Atlantis] Akira Maeda vs Masakatsu Funaki
I definitely picked up on the dynamic of the young upstart challenging The Man. Really good match, with Funaki's lightning-fast strikes being a highlight. Those strikes would be exciting on their own, but they work even more for me as a contrast to Maeda's more deliberate style. I felt like I watched something special, and agree that this was a great match.

Where The Big Boys Play #30
I'm not crazy about those matches either, so I can see that. It's been ages since I watched it, so that's going on an old memory. How does Flair/Luger at Starrcade compare to Flair/Luger at Wrestle War '90? I remember the difference between Luger's performance at the Bash and Starrcade being pretty significant.
