TLC 2012
With The Shield getting over so strong so fast, do we get some reshuffling of the planned WM lineup? I like the idea of them playing spoiler in the Rock/Cena II build if not. They could also add a lot to Punk/Undertaker.

[1990-08-17-USWA Texas] Steve Austin & Percy Pringle vs Chris Adams & Chris Von Erich
It's not exactly comfortable to watch Percy Pringle wrestle, but it's especially uncomfortable to watch Chris Von Erich wrestle. He's a miniature Kerry Von Erich who is trying so hard but just isn't very good. Pringle tries too, but Pringle isn't really a wrestler. This is a flat match aside from Austin's awesome bumping, and it shows how much Jeanne and Toni added to this feud when they aren't around. Chris Von Erich plays FIP in a choice I don't understand AT ALL and Austin has to carry him. He does a good job, which shows how well he's coming along. Von Erich gets the pin after a middle rope sunset flip and Pringle starts choking him out immediately after. The heels doubleteam him until Adams runs them off with a chair.

[1990-08-11-AWA] Team Challenge Series Recap / Survivor Battle Royal
That classic Eric Bischoff sincerity starts us off. Lee Marshall updates us on the Team Challenge Series. This is *wildly* complicated, but it was all to set up the survival battle royal. Then, we have an interview with Larry Zbyszko. He accuses Sting of ducking his challenges and throws out the "Anabolic Warrior" tagline to talk about "Vince Jr.'s champion". This is animated with lots of great lines from Larry. Really, really good. Then, we get the battle royal. Every 30 seconds a new man from each team - selected by the drawing of lots (lots?) - enters the ring and there's this point system that is so overdone that I'm completely uninterested in trying to understand it. Marshall and Verne do commentary on this, so I'm not sure it could get more quintessentially AWA. I had no idea Curtis Hughes ever worked the AWA. I also see Johnnie Stewart for the first time - a guy I had only previously heard of. The announcers not immediately picking up on who The Unknown Solider is cracks me up. Jake Millman is the last hope for Larry's Legends. The Milkman brings the battle royal home for Larry's Legends. Jake Milliman won the match for his team, but is being shut completely out of the victory party. The $1 million check is presented to Larry's Legends for winning the entire series.

[1990-08-11-USWA-Championship Sports] Jerry Lawler promo / Devastation Inc. and Jeff Jarrett
Lawler has been suspended in Texas for piledriving the referee. The storyline is that Akbar caused the suspension by complaining incessantly to USWA officials. He promises that when the suspension is lifted, Lawler will come after him. This is basic, but it's a textbook babyface promo vowing revenge, and I love it! Akbar and Young are out for an interview right after that. Craig Johnson has a contract for a Jarrett/Young hair vs hair match. Both are solid, but not great talkers, and Jeff Jarrett is out pretty quickly to interrupt. Jarrett admits that he would be scared to lose his hair, but if Young lost his hair, it would be an improvement. Therefore, he doesn't want Young's hair on the line. Instead, if Jarrett wins, Lawler's suspension is lifted. Akbar and Young have to talk about that one. Devastation leaves without signing anything and says they'll get back to him. And with that, we're out.

[1990-08-11-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Sting & Lex Luger
Luger is still upset about being jumped in the parking lot. This angle feels cold, even though all the right people seem to be involved in the top angle. I do like how the Horsemen previously denied any involvement, because I couldn't help but think how jumping someone in a parking lot is a crime and should probably result in an arrest.

[1990-08-11-USWA-Memphis TV] Dirty White Boy & Dirty White Girl and Bill Dundee & Tessa / Interview: Eddie Gilbert
DWB and Kimberly are out for an interview. DWG calls Tessa a "nothin' happenin' individual" and hypes the upcoming cage match she has with Tessa. Yikes! The taunting is finally too much for Tessa. They run the Anthonys off. Tessa does a fired up interview, pointing out that she is prettier, bigger, better and smarter than Tessa. DWG interrupts her train of thought by coming out again and the guys are trying to keep them apart. Good job hyping this, and it's not lost on me that they had both women dress up a little more than normal to hype the match. Later in the show, DWB does one of his typically strong wrestling interviews hyping the second cage match on Monday night - Lawler/Dundee vs Gilbert/DWB. I want to build a time machine so I can buy a ticket! Gilbert has been waiting to get Lawler in a cage his whole life. They aren't scared, and I like heels that aren't scared, mixed in with delusions of grandeur.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
Flair was supposed to finally drop the title to Luger at the Great American Bash. His contract was up in 1992, so he tried to play hardball and refuse to job without a contract extension and more money. They ended up deciding to part ways, and Flair agreed to drop the title to Barry Windham on a house show two weeks before the Bash. Then, they decided instead to negotiate a new contract, and Herd ended up getting mad and firing him in the middle of negotiations. Windham was only going to drop the title to Luger in two weeks anyway. But Herd was using him as a pawn, thinking Flair wouldn't dare try to get out of doing a job for Windham. But Windham was sort of manipulated for years into thinking that Flair quit the company so he wouldn't have to job for him. Not that Flair is innocent in all of this, either. I don't know that Luger would have sat the world on fire as champ anyway at this point, considering how many times he had been turned or failed to win the big one, but getting it without beating Flair was the kiss of death.

I just realized the 105-degree fever line was probably a subtle WWF attempt at trying to "top" Luger's fever at Capital Combat.

[1990-08-11-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Cowabunga
Cowabunga interview! Jeff Gaylord is bogus, dude! He's not bodacious like Jerry Lawler. He's going to take Gaylord down to the sewers and beat him up turtle style.

Warrior with another tweak to his look. They really thought that was the problem. Almost everyone in the crowd was wearing Warrior masks, which made for a great visual.

[1990-08-05-WWF-Wrestling Challenge] Interview: Dusty Rhodes
Sapphire is out wearing some expensive jewelry, and says she got a trip for a cruise around the world! They don't know where the presents are coming from, but both are happy. REALLY? COULD THIS BE ANY MORE OBVIOUS? COME ON! That aside, Dusty does an incredible interview built around the concepts of "satisfaction" and "playing dog".

[1990-08-04-USWA-Championship Sports] Steve Austin, Jeannie Clark & Percy Pringle and Chris & Toni Adams
First we get last week, where Jeanne had incriminating photos, including a nude photo with his naughty town covered with a sticky note! Some of them are obviously old and cut out from wrestling magazines while they are claiming the photos are new, which makes this funnier. Toni runs out and attacks Jeanne. Pringle holds her while Jeanne attacks her. Adams is out for the save. Wild stuff to set up this segment, but it was just a tease of what was to come. Now, Austin, Jeanne and Pringle are out and show about a dozen photos from last week of Chris Adams having what appears to be a romantic lunch with a woman who was not Toni. There is a photo that includes Adams getting a kiss. She says this conclusively proves that Adams is having an affair! Toni half-heartedly runs them off and then starts looking through the photos and crying. She tearfully demands that Chris come out now. Adams says it's obvious it was a complete setup and she knew he had lunch with an agent. Jeanne was willing to forget last week because they were obviously old photos, but this week is definitely not a setup. She slaps Adams and wants to know how he could do this to her. Later in the show, they show a clip of Jeanne vs Toni from the previous night. Percy Pringle runs in for the DQ. He holds Toni for a few shots before she gets in some shots of her own and runs him out of the ring before stripping Jeanne down to her bra. She runs around and screams before Percy covers her with his ring jacket. Toni meanwhile goes right after Pringle again, and the numbers catch up to her. Austin and Adams are nowhere to be found because the wrestlers are banned from ringside. Finally, Chris Von Erich makes the save as the women brawl out of sight. This brings Austin out to attack Chris. He's about to piledrive him when Adams makes the save. Now, we have Austin, Jeanne and Pringle out for an interview, with Percy tearing a photo of Chris and Toni in half as he laughs maniacally on the way to the ring. Austin is finding his voice in this feud and does a really good promo. Jeanne is a pretty strong on-camera performer too, actually. Percy does a screaming promo taking this to another level, saying he's going to beat up Chris Von Erich until Fritz and Doris have to jump in their Cadillac and save him! This brings Chris out to go after Pringle. The heels attack him, but Adams makes the save. After the commercial, Adams wants time to talk. He is grateful that Chris has stuck his neck out for him a few times now, and he can't believe Toni fell for that stupid trick. Chris really wants to cut a promo and be a wrestler really, really bad, but no. He promises to sit Toni down and talk to her when they're home, but he's coming after the asses of the heels. This feud is red hot.

[1990-08-04-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] The Pearl vs Joe Cazana
Meet The Pearl, WCW's idea to trick people into thinking that the Great Muta was back under a mask. Ranger Ross donned a mask and started pulling off Muta's old moves like the handspring elbow. Jim Ross points out that he is wearing "some type of oriental jacket" and "was not available for conversations with the media". The match is not particularly good, but it is amusing to see Ranger Ross trying to work a squash copying Muta's wrestling style and sorta kinda doing it.

[1990-08-04-USWA-Memphis TV] Eddie Gilbert vs Bill Dundee
I have heard of plenty of #1 Contender matches. But a #2 contender match? Very strange. The match feels a bit rushed, but hey, they go 7 minutes before there's a run-in, which is rare for this group. I'm just happy to see a match in full from Memphis. DWB runs in for the DQ on Gilbert, and Lawler quickly makes the save and they go to town with baseball bats. BUNDY THE GORILLA (a functional equivalent of Wildcat Willie) runs in and attacks Lawler and Dundee, and we find out soon after that it was JOHN TATUM all along! The three-on-two beatdown commences and Tatum clotheslines the referee. I usually don't focus on this type of thing, but using baseball bats as weapons this liberally concerns me, because kids watching may not get the idea of how dangerous a weapon a baseball bat is. I don't have a problem with baseball bats being used. It's more that I wish they were hitting them so many times with it. The heels hit the announce booth and cut a gloating promo. Meanwhile, we see the REAL Bundy the Gorilla tied up and gagged elsewhere in the building. Awesome.
