  1. Hogan is feeling better physically, but "emotionally and psychologically", he is still recovering. Perhaps he's embarrassed that a guy gently sitting on his chest sidelined him for the summer. Tugboat sends a message of thanks to fans for their cards and letters. Joking aside, this is a nice piece of hype that buys time and builds anticipation for Hogan's first appearance post-injury.
  2. They were given a ton of time and I agree with what Childs said -- they had a lot of great ideas, but they didn't quite come together. They had a very good match, but it's not at the level of the best matches of either guy (not that I was expecting that). Neither guy was probably ready for a singles match this long just yet. I think that's the cool thing about Misawa's ascension. He didn't just go on his own; he took others with him. Misawa and Kawada changed their style to work on top, while I think Kobashi was less a case of changing his style and more a case of just improving dramatically in a short period of time. You see flashes of what they can do on display, and it's clear that they are eager to make the most of the opportunity. This is a matchup that improved consistently throughout the decade. It's much better than the Misawa/Kobashi match earlier in the year for sure. Odd to see them working like juniors, though.
  3. I'm distracted early on by the idea that Moo Toe Cagey would be an amazing message board name. This is not a very interesting match. They spend too much time sitting in headlocks, and some of Owen's highspots are *too* graceful ... like he's doing ballet instead of competing in a contact sport. Just some punching and kicking mixed into the stuff he was already doing would have gone a long way to make him seem more aggressive.
  4. I'm not really sure why Ole is there, but Flair does a great promo hyping the Bash. I love that his shirt matches his hair.
  5. Paul E. Dangerously is excited for Mean Mark to challenge Lex Luger at the Great American Bash. He puts over the U.S. title big time in a good, short promo.
  6. So much to love here! I could have watched these guys go twice as long under elimination rules and loved every second of it, but I'll take what I got, which was a fantastic, high-octane match that's typical of the great NJ tags of the 80s. Saito was on a suicide mission with some of those bumps to the floor in the first fall. Koshinaka as the whipping boy is lots of fun. I love the retaliatory clubberin' spot that leads to the finish in the second fall. Kurisu vs The World was incredible. Great match, and I agree with Childs that this will likely be in the top 10 for the year.
  7. Ted DiBiase and Virgil are with Big Boss Man's teacher in Cobb County. She matter-of-factly says the Big Boss Man is the worst student she has ever had. Mrs. Cofer is hilarious!
  8. Pretty wild brawl even before they make it to the river. Great, wild spectacle. These two are a blast. I cracked up at the ring announcer in his thick New Yawk accent announcing that "STAN HANSEN HAS BEEN DISQUALIFIED FOR THROWING TERRY FUNK INTO THE RIVAH".
  9. Tatum gives himself away as the gift-giver in a funny moment. He wrote Tessa a poem that he memorized: Roses are red Violets are blue Tessa I love you How sweet! The crowd is on his case and it's having a real impact on him. He says he's stopped drinking, he has sleeping better and he has a tan and a new hairstyle. He pleads with Tessa to come back to him before hugging the cameraman and comes across as a total psychopath. A fan starts booing him and he runs to give him a hug. SELF HELP IMPROVEMENT GUIDE BOOKS. This is a total hugfest, as he is hugging and smiling at everyone in sight. Seeing him get more boos the more sugary sweet he gets is awesome. Pringle referring to Tatum's cobra clutch by its Japanese name freaked me out.
  10. Tessa receives a gift marked "Personal" during the interview that she hesitates to open. Dundee is fired up and does a great promo.
  11. Pringle is acting sort of like a babyface again, which is weird. Austin lies about what happened in the match. There will be a MIXED TAG MATCH next time around. Both come across as overly coached when they do promos, but they also both come across as believable in some ways. Austin gets in the ring to face Chris Germany and looks really good. It would be hard to see this guy and not see the potential at this point, even if he did have a lot to learn. He makes quick work of the guy, but isn't satisfied there. Jeanne is getting some "Go Home Slut!" chants while she slaps Germany a few times. John Brazille is out to offer them the contract. The moment they sign, Chris and Toni run out and all four are brawling all over the place. This is good stuff that did a great job of making me want to see the mixed tag match.
  12. Clip of their MSC match. Lawler has Snowman pinned and Spinks refuses to count, rolling Lawler off of him. Lawler punches Spinks in retaliation, Spinks punches him back and then does a fast count to give Snowman the title. Lawler comes out for a promo, wearing an airbrushed LEON STINKS t-shirt with some missing teeth, and gets some cheapshots in about standing in a welfare line. Lawler challenges Snowman to look the studio crowd in the eye and tell them Snowman beat him and won the title. Lawler wants Leon Spinks in the ring Monday night, which has been signed. Spinks sends in a taped promo which cracks me up. It made me laugh out loud too, Childs. It's a riot, especially when they show Lawler reacting to it in the corner. Lawler's reaction to it is priceless. They show highlights of him against Muhammad Ali from 1978 to close things out, which is pretty cool footage.
  13. BROTHER ULTIMATE is the guest. He has gone halfway in changing his look to what it would be later in the year, wearing much less face paint and slightly changing his hair. The WWF thought that the reason he wasn't drawing was that his look was dated, so they started trying to modernize it. He brings out AMANDA ULTIMATE WARRIOR, the name she gives herself, a little girl dressed like him. Warrior has her flex, do a cartwheel and do a handstand. This is apparently what intensity and love are all about. I wonder where *she* is now.
  14. This video is fucking genius. This is one of the best things the company has ever produced. So manipulative and emotional. I love it!
  15. Is Marine Le Pen a good comparison to JBL?
  16. Espectrito and Sagrada never fail to impress. Someone should put together a comp of their feud. A worthy addition to the cannon, with Espectrito as one of the best guys in wrestling at pacing a match and making high flyers look good. Espectrito can feed highspots to Sagrada so well, and there are some great ones here.
  17. Yeah, to this point, Takada has been in the best UWF matches of the year. This is another excellent showing, miles better than the January match, with Takada pulling off one of the best performances of his career. There is so much drama and urgency, which is what really puts this over the top.
  18. This IWA stuff must have been pretty deep in the can by the time it made TV, as JYD was working on top in WCW by this time. Here, he's hyping an upcoming match with Lawler, which was likely already in the past.
  19. Instead of having Damian in a bag, Jake comes out with Damian around his neck. They recap Bad News Brown recently attacking Jake after a squash. They point out that Bad News has a fear of snakes and Jake plans on exploiting that. Jake with a great line to wrap things up.
  20. What happened to this Toyota? The aggression, the pacing, the strikes ... everything here just really works for me. She has even more of a mean streak than Hotta, *and* manages to balance that with some really excellent selling that plays the crowd like a fiddle, *and* works in her trademark athleticism. She looks like an amazingly complete wrestler, and I'm baffled by why she narrowed her approach as she became more seasoned. This match was awesome. Hotta stretching Toyota so much in Boston crab that she's able to roll completely over into another hold was a wow moment. I was completely hooked into the story of this -- Hotta torturing Toyota to a ridiculous level; Toyota finding a way to hold on and kick out when it looks like all hope is lost; and Toyota displaying some amazing resourcefulness and putting together a desperate, but effective comeback. She goes from fighting for her survival, to fighting to prove her superiority. Now Hotta has to dig deep and responds in kind and it's anybody's game. Toyota pulls off a victory that really looks like she has accomplished something substantial. Total MOTYC.
  21. On here for the famous Hokuto injury, but yeah, the split crowd thing is fun. I'm guessing a crowd predisposed to be divided like this a few years later would have had the male fans siding with Hokuto over Toyota, as she had the larger-than-life character by that point. Hokuto stretches Toyota on the mat for the bulk of this, and Toyota hadn't really adapted the shrieking thing yet (which I've been able to move past by this point, for what it's worth). Hokuto does a high cross body to the floor and lands shin first on the guardrail in a nasty spot, creating a gash on her knee and resulting in a pretty bad injury. She tries to go back in the ring to continue the match and can't even stand. The match was developing nicely before that for sure, but this was a key moment.
  22. I can't figure out who he's talking about, but whoever it isn't fit to carry his bags, wash his car or tie his shoes. He wouldn't even allow this person to do maid service at his home or mow his lawn!
  23. The Horsemen accepts the challenge of the Dudes for next week, with Barry making sure to add that JYD can't get anyone of his own kind to help him, so he has to get Sting or Orndorff. Ugh.
  24. Tatum is still trying to show how much of a changed man he is. He feels guilty for covering a jobber after sidestepping a charge into the corner. He picks him up to hug him in the post-match, then superkicks him. A heckling fan calls him a jerk and he responds by THROWING THE GUY INTO THE CROWD. People start screaming and the woman who was already standing up to yell at him says that he could have hurt someone. He immediately apologizes, freaks out and runs away. Just unbelievable.
  25. Pringle was working hard on promos during this time period. He tells Chris Von Erich if he wants to have his first wrestling match, he can have it against Percy next Friday night! I think Kerry is gone at this point, as Percy talks about him in the past tense.
