[1990-06-16-USWA-Championship Sports] Devastation Inc. Birthday Party
Early in the show (not shown), Devastation Inc. celebrate their birthday and have cake and decorations and other assorted snacks at ringside. Later, Jeff Jarrett is working a squash and Devastation Inc. all run into attack him. Jarrett singlehandedly fights off all four guys, which is ridiculous, until Chico Torres throws hot sauce still at ringside from the party in Jarrett's eyes.

[1990-06-16-USWA-Championship Sports] Jeff Jarrett vs Devastation Inc. Feud Recap
Akbar has been trying to recruit Jarrett, and he has offered him a $5,000 sign-on bonus. Akbar praises him like crazy, and says he's the one guy that can beat Jerry Lawler. Jarrett says if he's going to bring the belt to their camp, shouldn't he be worth more than $5,000? Akbar immediately doubles his offer to $10,000 if he'll sign today. He tells him he'll team with Jeff Gaylord later today and Jeff accepts. It cracks me up that Jeff Jarrett and Jeff Gaylord is his dream team. Later in the same show, Jarrett offers continued support during a tag match against Billy Joe Travis and someone. Jarrett encourages Gaylord to pose in every corner then socks him, leaving Gaylord open for a pin. Gaylord's acting is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. Continuing later in the same show, Brickhouse Brown is trying to negotiate himself a $15,000 rate in front of Reggie B. Fine and Sweet Daddy Falcone. This causes an argument and Brown gets attacked. Weird segment, as Brown was the one who came across as the heel before he was attacked. Akbar is about to burn him with his cigar (!) but Jarrett makes the big save. More members of Devastation Inc. hit the ring, but Jarrett gets away before a beatdown. Also in the same show, Jarrett and Brown say they'll put up $10,000 for a tag match if Akbar will match it and they'll have a $20,000 winner take all match. Not sure who in Devastation Inc. they will face. To close things out, Craig Johnson announces that Brickhouse Brown won't make the show because his father passed away. Odd that they would acknowledge that on the air.

[1990-06-16-USWA-Memphis TV] Bill Dundee and Dirty White Boy
Finish from MSC. DWB suffers a TECHNICAL LOSS after attacking the ref. John Tatum attacks Dundee after the match, as the feud is now taking place in both Memphis and Dallas. Jeff Jarrett and Billy Joe Travis make the save. Back at the studio, DWB is standing by with Ronnie P. Gossett. Dundee sends in a taped promo with Tessa vowing revenge. DWB says if Tessa gets in his way again, he'll knock her teeth down her throat. He's after a $10,000 bounty on Dundee's head. This is a good promo, but Tony Anthony really found himself in SMW.

[1990-06-16-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler / Jerry Lawler vs Rex King
The Leon Spinks thing is happening this coming Monday night, so something was off with the dates on the local Evansville promos. Lawler thinks there is a conspiracy between him and Eddie Marlin, that he and Marlin seem to not like each other, but Snowman seems to always get his way. "You couldn't beat me if you had a knife and a gun, which you probably do" ... that gets a big "WHOA" out of the crowd. He starts in again on the stuff with Snowman being a no-talent bum who's not a worthy contender, which I hate, but we've been over that. Lawler then gets in the ring to take on Rex King. He's distracted by Snowman at ringside the entire time. Snowman finally has enough of the taunts and they get into a pull-apart brawl that looks pretty legit with Marlin losing his glasses and Lawler throwing some awesome punches. Pretty awesome. This feud is still delivering.

[1990-06-16-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs The Snowman
Another match worked in the same style of the previous ones. Again, just highlights, but what a series. As promised in the hype, Lawler did throw fire after some help from Downtown Bruno. Referee Kerry Von Erich seems to be having a mild seizure over what to do in some really odd acting. Lawler is still hanging on as a heel.

[1990-06-15-NWA-Power Hour] Arn Anderson vs Rocky King
Arn destroys the poor guy and the Horsemen run in to help finally take this guy out. Sid always wearing a tux is great. The Dudes With Attitude make the save and run the Horsemen off.

[1990-06-15-NWA-Power Hour] Rocky King and Thunderbolt Patterson
Rocky King has ANOTHER surprise for Ole Anderson ... THUNDERBOLT PATTERSON. Thunderbolt threatened to have the NAACP picket CNN Center if WCW wouldn't give him a job, and that threat worked. But WCW feels even more in a time warp now than they ever did in the Bischoff era.

[1990-06-15-USWA Texas] Interview: Percy Pringle / Kerry Von Erich vs Matt Borne
Percy does a classy promo before the match, pointing out that Kerry may be the next one of Fritz's sons who gets buried six feet under. It doesn't even get much heat, so there you go. I don't know why they act like Kerry is the last son. What about Kevin? Percy gets mouthy with Chris at ringside and at this point, they are getting more of the focus than Kerry/Borne, which reeks of Jerry Jarrett trying to bully Kerry into taking a pay cut or something. Nothing they've done since the parking lot brawl has hit that level, even if all of their matches have good qualities. Borne takes a bump right on the cameraman. Chaotic scene from there, as Tony Borne is accidentally knocked down by Kerry, Percy Pringle pulls out handcuffs to try to lock up Chris and the tables are turned on him and the heels are laying as this segment ends. This feud had some real promise early on.

[1990-06-15-USWA Texas] Steve Austin vs Chris Adams
Last few minutes. Adams catches Austin with a nasty superkick to the gut, then ties him in the ropes. Good action. Austin misses a top rope splash, and Adams responds with a lariat from the top for the win. One of the better matches. Jeanne, who was banned from ringside, is out quickly to throw Austin a chair. She tries to sneak away but Jeanne chases her with a kendo stick! Austin snags the kendo stick and Jeanne ends up hitting Toni with it. Really good segment all around.

[1990-06-15-USWA Texas] Bill Dundee vs John Tatum
Tatum is in tears over Dundee's talk of marrying Tessa. He bought Tessa a diamond ring that he plans to give her as a symbol of his love. He hopes Tessa will come back to him. He is completely torn apart, and we start seeing the signs of the mental breakdown to come. Get used to the words CHANGED MAN. Before the match starts, Tatum apologizes, saying he knows he shouldn't beat a woman. He bought some self-improvement books and he has learned the error of his ways. Fans are heckling him, and he seems genuinely hurt. He wants everyone to know he means what he says. Outstanding. He apologizes to Dundee and offers to pay his doctor bills for busting him open on the ringpost recently. He promises to wrestle this match in a way to demonstrate that he's changed man. He has nothing against Bill Dundee, but he's ... really not a good person. This is too much for words. As they try to get the match started, he pleas with Dundee. "I was sick, I was in love!" He randomly stops to shake hands with a security guard and hug the cameraman! He tries to hug Bronco Lubich, but he wants none of it. Tatum gives him a HILARIOUS "Oh, you!" point and smile. Throughout the match, Tatum teases cheating, but stops himself. He's obsessively wanting to shake hands with Dundee. Dundee takes a big bump off of a shoulderblock and Tatum holds the ropes for him to come back in and goes for ANOTHER handshake. This is a riot! He tries to start a round of applause in the arena after Dundee gets him in an armdrag. If the crowd had done it, this would be the greatest match in history. Dundee ends up landing on Tessa after a shoulderblock, and Tatum immediately pulls a chain out of his trunks and decks Dundee to get the win. MUST-SEE.

[1990-06-15-EMLL] El Dandy & El Satanico vs Atlantis & Angel Azteca
Sadly, the Dandy/Atlantis title match that aired the week before on TV was clipped down so much that it wasn't really yearbook-worthy. It's unfortunate, because the Lucha Title Match is easily my favorite type of wrestling match, and getting two of them with great workers over a one-week period would have been a real treat. Still, knowing that helps with context here. This is a pretty cocky El Dandy taking on two guys who he's recently had some tough title matches against, teaming with the guy who will be his biggest rival by year's end. This is a great match. Every time Dandy takes a bump, he oversells it like crazy since the crowd seems to love him getting his comeuppance so much. He is amazing in this match, working beautiful sequences that no one else in wrestling could probably pull off at this point, then mixing in just enough rudo mannerisms to make sure it doesn't babyface him. Simply walking away from a long exchange with Azteca gets big heel heat. The match isn't really about Satanico, but he is tremendous every time he is in. He's so good as a character that it's easy to forget how good he is as a wrestler sometimes. Just wonderful stuff with four total pros.

[1990-06-13-NWA-Clash of the Champions IX] Interview: Ric Flair / Ric Flair vs Junkyard Dog / Interview: Rocky King & Sting / Ric Flair and Sting
They tried with the entrances, but the drawing of Flair is pretty horrible. Since when does he wear tape around his wrists? This is a notoriously bad match, but it's not as bad as its reputation. Still, Flair makes a good effort, but JYD just can't do much. He looks exhausted just a couple of minutes into the match. This feels more like a TV main event than a Clash main event. The Horsemen beat down JYD for the DQ (Flair can't even beat JYD at this point!) until the Dudes make the save. After a commercial break, Jim Ross interviews Rocky King and Sting. Sting announces that he's ready to take on Flair for the World title at the Great American Bash. He begs Flair to come back out. Arn Anderson takes a bump and we finally get the Flair/Sting confrontation we've been waiting on for months. The Dudes hold the Horsemen off, and for a disappointing show, they at least ended on a hot note.

[1990-06-13-NWA-Clash of the Champions IX] Arn Anderson vs Paul Orndorff
Last few minutes. This is worth checking out in full, but it was a borderline pick and we needed space, so we opted to just show the finish. Cool to see Orndorff back. Of all the guys Ole brought back for returns, I think Orndorff was the only one who came to work. This makes his run being so short a little baffling.
-
[1990-06-13-NWA-Clash of the Champions IX] Lex Luger vs Sid Vicious
Don't blink. The story here was that Luger was still injured and couldn't work a full match, but they wanted him to work the show. Sid surprisingly agreed to do the job. Luger is still way too over to fall down the card like this, although he doesn't feel the same that he did before the Flair series.

[1990-06-13-NWA-Clash of the Champions IX] Midnight Express vs Rock & Roll Express
I addressed the match in the previous posts. Not at the level of the other matches between these teams, but an interesting one for what they tried to do. Jim Ross is a riot here, saying hello to specific fans all over the country and even taking a shot at WON readers by saying a lot of fans didn't really want to see the Rock & Roll Express return, but they've come back and proven everyone wrong with this run.
