Chris Von Erich, who I feel sorry for every time I see him, is doing an interview when Percy Pringle comes out to mock him. Pringle was one of the best talkers around at this point. He goes to slap Chris and Pringle has to bump for him. Borne is out quickly, Kerry comes out to even the sides and we have a pull-apart brawl. Good segment. -
Joined in progress. Austin destroys the poor guy, with West taking a couple of really nasty bumps on the arena floor. I'm sure he didn't get paid nearly enough for all of that. He holds West for a few slaps from Jeanne on top of that before Chris and Toni are out to chase them away. Toni gives a decent fired up promo and has a wad of Jeanne's hair, but I think she's mentally ill. Adams is good here too.

A name so cool that Shawn and Diesel stole it a few years later! Sting looks like a lesser star by association hanging around these guys. I know Luger was injured, but they sure swept him aside.

Jim Herd announces that the Horsemen have been fined, Woman has been suspended indefinitely and that a full investigation is taking place to determine Ole's role in raising the cage at Capital Combat. He says if Ole raised the cage, then Ole will be suspended indefinitely as well. The Horsemen are not happy about this at all. Ole threatens to get lawyers involved.

Lawler walks through a fire green screen, and accuses Snowman of walking around Memphis with his hand out. Pretty blatant racial undertones. Between Lawler teasing throwing fire, Kerry being the ref, and Eddie Marlin declaring the match will not stop until one guy pins the other, they really wanted to draw a big house.

The next Lawler/Snowman match will have Kerry Von Erich as referee. Snowman is starting to act more like a babyface. He's an awful promo, but it an odd way, it does make this feel more real. He wants Eddie Marlin to come out, which should be awesome. Marlin says Snowman should be excited about Kerry as referee, considering how much he hates Lawler, and even says if he wins the title, he'll strap the belt on him, because he loves the idea of having a black world champion, and hopes all the black fans in Memphis will fill the Coliseum. They really went all out with this feud!

Highlights of what looks to be another spectacular MSC match built around strikes and takedowns. Redneck UWFI! I would have loved to have seen this live. It's so disappointing that we'll probably never see this in full. The match ends in a DQ when Snowman accidentally catches referee Lou Winston in the mouth. Both guys take their shot at Winston in the post-match and continue having their fun brawl, which is made even more chaotic by the ref hating both guys. Back at the studio, Lou Winston says he promised the week before he wouldn't put his hands on either wrestler if they wouldn't put their hands on him. He says when Lawler gets done, he's coming after Snowman. I like Snowman calmly in the studio crowd each week. This is the feud of the year.

Ted DiBiase visits Cobb County. He finds a guy on the side of the road who claims to have been abused by Boss Man in prison. I refuse to believe he called himself the Big Boss Man as a police officer! DiBiase vignettes are always fun. Later in the week, Gene Okerlund visits the same spot to investigate. He finds the foreman at the construction site, and I crack up that he mistakenly calls Gene "Ma'am" before correcting himself. He vouches for Boss Man's credentials.

Total chaos, as Toni jumps on Jeanne before the match starts and there's a catfight! Austin and Adams have a brawl before Austin can even get out of his ring robe. John Brazille comes down and says if the women don't stay out of the ring, he will ban all of them from the Sportatorium. Austin and Adams finally get started, and Austin seems to be improving by the week, even with Adams still carrying things. Jeanne runs in after a ref bump and gets spanked! Meanwhile, Austin ties Toni up in the ropes while Adams is distracted. I do have to admit that all of that blond hair flying around is a pretty fun visual. This feud is just now starting to heat up.

I still think this was a great match. The moment can't help but propel it. But I agree with what is being said as well. It does feel like a big batch of solid but bland sandwiched between a great opening and great ending. What they're doing in the middle is fundamentally sound, but not really all that interesting. I thought to myself that this would likely be the MOTY going in, but it's not even the match of the month. The six-man was much better than this, not to mention Dandy/Azteca. All of that out of the way, the moment really is special. It's always fun seeing a star being born in wrestling, and Misawa's rise is one of the most memorable. This begins a remarkable two-year chase to the Triple Crown that I've seen bits and pieces of, but I've never watched in order. So I'm excited.

Maybe she lived in the mall, like that father and daughter I was very jealous of on the Christmas episode of Saved By The Bell. (I'm not trivializing homelessness. I am trivializing the Saved By The Bell portrayal of homelessness.)

Regardless of who said it, it's a great point. If Scott made it up himself, I was ready to give him credit for it. Sounds like another thing Jim Cornette got right. Remember, Cornette talks an amazing game.

Does anyone know if the Scott Keith point about great promos having three things -- motive, intent and hype -- is something that came from him, or something he got from someone else? If he did come up with it himself, it's probably the sharpest thing he ever said, but I was curious.

No editing from us, I don't think. It was just what was shown if I recall correctly. Not sure what the point was of giving Gordy such a brief run, unless it was just that Jumbo couldn't be holding the title at Budokan, because it wasn't time for Misawa to get the win yet. Did I just answer my own question? Yeah, it's hard to really tell a lot about the match from watching this, but Gordy was indeed more inspired than he was in the Jumbo match.
So much of 1990 EMLL has been a showcase of the best matches. I felt like we should also show the main event scene at the time, great match or not, and this involves Ken Timbs, so it's hard to go too wrong. It's not at the level of the best EMLL matches so far, but it is still a really fun match with tons of fire and personality. Perro being as over as he was is one of those things I'll never quite get, but it worked. Satanico looks fantastic and is the workhorse of this match. The Timbs turn is excellent, as he trips Lizmark coming off the top rope and then attacks Satanico as well. I was wondering why they were teaming when Satanico has been such a crowd favorite in 1990, so that explains that.
I think Casas had a much better understanding of what Japanese fans wanted than Santo. It's not that this has way more heat than Santo/Fuerza or anything, but Casas made a bigger adjustment to his style to accommodate the style in Japan. I appreciated him bringing his mat game so that Asai's highspots would stand out more. And those highspots look beautiful, but I really enjoyed the struggle behind their stuff on the mat so much more, despite it being pretty basic by Casas standards. My favorite moment is the battle for the surfboard. Ultimo makes a big effort, but Casas gives him nothing and ends up winning that exchange by attrition, as Asai finally gives up on applying the hold. Some highspots still look great, and some have aged, but the stuff like that never gets old. The match picks up in the final few minutes when Casas tears apart Ultimo's knee pretty aggressively. In some ways, it feels like he watched some Choshu tapes and decided to emulate him in this match. Big credit to Casas for showing some Regal-like detail in applying holds, and the end result is a terrific grappler versus high flyer match that I enjoyed way more than I expected. One of my favorite matches of the year.
I was disappointed in this. Fuerza Guerrera is a fine wrestler, but he's not meant to be this credible. Some of the sequences seemed to be missing some snap, and this was too short to really build to something big. I still like the idea of it being here, as these guys were world class workers in spite of the match falling short, and it's an interesting look at them taking their act around the world.
I don't think you've made up the category. I just think it's drilling down to a level that is true, but not really relevant.
Good match, but again Kendo is the big standout. I wish he could have stayed around and worked in Michinoku Pro or something. He is by far the most over guy of everyone, both in this match and the previous one.
Not to make this political, but Ric Flair was a Jesse Helms supporter. I'm sure he doesn't support the right of gay people to marry, because he wants to preserve the sanctity of the institution.
