  1. Woman with the Horsemen just seems so right. Again, not sure why they felt they needed to get rid of her. Sid looks awesome in a tux, but I wish he wasn't stuck cutting a promo on Robocop. The Horsemen are all on fire. This feels like a Crockett-era promo, and is great!
  2. Luger really comes across as a star here. He deserved better than he got here, just acting as a stop gap until Sting could get his run. In an interesting bit of trivia that the yearbook doesn't pick up, they were doing odd hype and Luger was being presented as the underdog going into Capital Combat instead of the favorite. Luger even promised a win (not here, but on television).
  3. Lawler turns the spin cycle on to explain what happened at Mid South Coliseum. Apparently, Jimmy Valiant fell asleep during the match, and Lawler tried to revive him with smelling salts. Good to know, as I was worried that he may have cheated. I should have known he wouldn't do that, what was I thinking? Some radio DJ and a random masked guy are with him. It's Mother's Day weekend, so Lawler has a clip of him visiting Jimmy Valiant's house, which looks like it was boarded up by the police. For some reason, I'm not surprised. He ends up finding his "mom" at a laundromat. When it comes to moms who are obviously actors, I much prefer AC Slater's fake mom that Zach hired to break up his date with a girl Zach was interested in. Back at the studio, Valiant isn't very happy at all with this and chases Lawler away before cutting a promo vowing revenge on Lawler for bashing his mother, who apparently passed away some time ago. He gets all Dusty and tells everyone to call their mothers this weekend. They got some fresh blood in over summer that really heated things up in the USWA, which is good, because as great as Lawler is, and as entertaining as even Valiant can be, some of this stuff is starting to wear thin.
  4. Highlights from Mid South Coliseum. The various ways they found to work around Jimmy Valiant's limitations are pretty impressive. Lawler bleeds and takes a big beating from Valiant, and Ronnie P. Gossett even takes a few bumps. Lawler ends up using ether to knock Valiant out and then win the title when Valiant is counted out of the ring. TECHNICAL LOSS. I've always wanted to ask anyone who has ever seen someone use a soaked ether rag live if there is a smell in the building. The fans at ringside are reacting to it, so I'm curious if they were plants or what.
  5. In a sort of related story, the guy who does the voice of Elmo was accused of having a relationship with a minor earlier this week, but the minor later recanted the story.
  6. I've never heard the name Jimmy Savile in my life.

Even in small markets, if there are cases where you can see that Patera's presence or absence had a noticeable impact (positive or negative) on the gate, it's worth mentioning, whether it's with an asterisk or not.

You specifically said you PMd him to ask him about it. The other option would be just come to the conclusion that someone that recommends tons of really good European wrestling, Joshi and FMW that no one else watches or talks about is worth having around, and that any spelling errors he makes can just be ignored.

If no one else has anything to say to FLIK, and FLIK has nothing to say in his defense, I'm closing this tomorrow. At that point, deal with FLIK's spelling and go about your day, but please don't sidetrack threads by asking him about it.
  10. It does go back to the 1950s. You had a lot of guys going into wrestling because of higher pay, and also because they didn't have to deal with an asshole coach bossing them around. They had more freedom to control their schedules as well, as if they had a falling out with a promoter, there were 30 other territories across the country where they could work, so it wasn't a big deal. Dave had a long, interesting post on this at The Board a little while back that maybe someone can dig up.
  11. I think with someone like a Lex Luger, it's an attempt to say, "See, this guy is a real athlete, not just some no-talent steroid jerk we found in a gym". The anti-WWF share of the wrestling fanbase resented that wrestling was going in that direction. Yes, Luger, Nikita and the Road Warriors being very over, but wrestling is full of double standards. Anyway, up until nearly the end of WCW, market research showed that the majority of their fanbase were bigger overall sports fans than the WWF fanbase. To me, the bigger question than "Why mention it?" is "Why avoid mentioning it?"
  12. He was continuing the tradition of that era, whether it was still true or not. Like many things, it eventually became outdated. That said, the idea that playing up the credentials of a wrestler is a bad thing is ridiculous. At least under the traditional wrestling model, which is where Jim Ross said most of these things, the lies they have to tell audiences in wrestling are a lot more believable and effective when surrounded by as much truth as possible.
  13. It stems from an era where many pro wrestlers did in fact choose wrestling over football. The money wasn't always better in football than wrestling.
  14. Rick Rude debuts the new haircut! It's amazing the difference that made.
  15. Brother Love is so good in this gimmick, much better than I remembered. They're really milking the feet kissing for everything it's worth. Sapphire slaps him when he gets a little too big for his britches. Lots of big personalities here.
  16. Sting, Luger, the Steiners and Animal are guests on Family Feud, against the women of GLOW. WCW wins I think 4 out of the 5 games. Scott Steiner REPRESENTS in the first lightning round, getting 191 of 200 points needed to win the final round! Rick suggests that one of the costs of owning a car is $9000, which sadly no one said. Still, they brought home the needed points on Day 1. Day 2 was won by GLOW. I don't know the name of the first one. Godiva is second and does much better in her answers, but gets less points. These people they surveyed were silly. Day 3 was won by WCW. Sting is up first in the lightning round for his team, and pulls 131 points for his team, but Rick Steiner can't bring it home, only getting 18 points. Day 4 was also won by WCW. Sting is up first again, and again makes a healthy lead with 127 points. Animal is up second and is horrible, but his answers are hilarious in how bad they are. Why aren't they playing Lex? He had a 3.78 GPA in college, you know. Day 5 was also won by WCW. Finally, Lex plays and I realize someone did his homework for him in college, but he does get to 102 points. Sting is out to follow Lex, but does worse than expected despite getting more chances than Luger, which I guess is a metaphor for 1990. This was fun!
  17. Flair and Woman seem to be really starting to gel as a couple now. They always had chemistry, but this is the best. Flair cuts a good promo on Luger, and Woman seems more comfortable than ever on camera. WCW suddenly deciding to ditch her in a few weeks so they can focus on getting Missy Hyatt over was a pretty stupid move.
  18. The Horsemen announces that Sid Vicious has debuted as the newest member of the Four Horsemen. In a nice shirt, with kickass entrance music, with his size, with Woman at his side and rubbing shoulders with the Horsemen, Sid looks like the future of wrestling. It's a shame he has to waste his first promo telling Robocop he is going to crush him like a tin can. All of the Horsemen come out to show solidarity - Arn in a suit! Good stuff.
  19. Kerry's revenge. Awesome stuff. Really heated brawl. I was so sure they were going to work a double countout when they were brawling outside, and then a cheap DQ when Borne threw the chair in the ring, and neither happened. I love when the cynical smark in me gets bitchslapped like that. They finally did work a double countout, but it was totally worth it, as they brawl outside the Sportatorium into the parking lot and take bumps on cars. Kerry slams Borne on top of the car and ends up slugging matchmaker John Brazille when he tries to intervene. Other wrestlers finally come out to split this up, and John Brazille wants the camera out of there. This seems like something that should be more famous because it has major tape collector appeal and is really unique and intense.
  20. DIRTY WHITE BOY! One thing I'll say about all four of these guys is that they all look like they would have fit right in working in WCW. DWB in particular was such a good worker and talker - perhaps the biggest casualty of the territories dying. Aside from Jarrett/Travis, my favorite USWA match of the year. Post-match, Ronnie P. Gossett takes out his frustrations over "Porky" chants by dropping splashes on the babyfaces. Not sure I need to see a manager this physically dominant, but whatever. Really, really good match.
  21. In an interesting pattern on the yearbook, every EMLL trios match has been better than the one before it. This is my favorite one so far, with the best overall combination of hatred, highspots and a focused layout. Each fall really has its own personality and is a nice mini-match on its own. But what's most impressive here is how they continue to build on the energy level when you think the match has already peaked. Good to the last drop.
  22. Lawler doesn't bury Valiant as much as he does everyone else. Short and to the point.
  23. Royalty expects loyalty, baby! Savage is elated that Sapphire "willfully" kissed his feet, but he insists on Dusty doing the same to Sherri. Sherri NEVER stops working. She is going crazy with hand gestures and facial expressions the whole time Savage talks. She is a woman who earned her pay.
  24. Austin is on his way to the top! He owns two pairs of Adams' boots, his ex-wife and even his dog, who he claims to be abusing. Not cool. Jeanne has a few words for Chris herself, and Adams is out to interrupt. He wants to know why she is here. She tells him she can do whatever she wants and Austin ends up attacking Adams, who makes his own comeback. He grabs a chair, but Jeanne ends up spraying Chris in the eyes. Marc Lowrance thinks it's TEAR GAS THAT KEEPS WOMEN FROM GETTING RAPED, which is sadly one of the most sensible things I've heard a man say about rape all year. Pretty angle-heavy show. We haven't even scratched the surface on this feud yet.
  25. Finish of a John Tatum squash. Bill Dundee has asked the crowd to be quiet and they surprisingly obliged! He ends up handcuffing Tatum to the ring ropes and calls The Lovely Tessa into the ring. Dundee insists on a title shot. Tatum refuses and Dundee kisses Tessa, and Tatum is furious, but still won't give him the title shot. He finally agrees after a second kiss and leaves. Tatum was clearly coerced and bullied here. Clearly.
