[1990-04-28-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Bobby Heenan and Ultimate Warrior
Again, I like the serious side of Heenan. He says he and Rude found weaknesses in Warrior's game, and that they are confident Rude will take the WWF title. Warrior I think says he wants to give Rick Rude AIDS, talking about swallowing and giving him an out of control disease. Love Vince and Jesse riding horses to close things out.

[1990-04-28-WWF-Saturday Night's Main Event] Hart Foundation vs Rockers
Were they thinking about turning the Harts heel for the Demolition feud at first? The pre-match promo sure plays like it. Really strong match. They cut a really quick pace. It's amazing they got all of this plus a pre-match promo and a post-match brawl involving all three teams into 12 minutes. There's not much to appreciate about this match beyond the surface, but that's not really what they're going for anyway. For an SNME sprint, this is very well done.

[1990-04-28-USWA-Memphis TV] Jimmy Valiant, Jerry Lawler and Ben Jordan
Jimmy Valiant continues his amazing celebration, wearing Jerry Lawler's crown and continuing to bask in the love of the crowd. Lawler asks Valiant to come out and face him, and he responds by singing "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot". Amazing! Valiant says Ben Jordan will have the title shot. Lawler tries to talk him out of it, but Lawler was the one who made this booking, and the new champ picks up the previous champ's booking. Lawler says if he's championship material, then he should be able to beat another contender. He tries to talk Ben Jordan into having a match with him to determine who gets the match at MSC. At first, Jordan says no, that he has the match scheduled and has no reason to do this. He finally tricks Lawler into getting in the ring and putting his title shot on the line, so now we have Lawler vs Ben Jordan. Jordan comes out of the gate strong, so Lawler starts playing hide-the-chain to turn the tide then starts working him over. Jordan bleeds and is pretty much destroyed, so now Lawler has the rematch. Valiant tries to get in the ring, and Lawler taunts him by piledriving Jordan. This may be Jerry Lawler's finest hour.

[1990-04-28-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Ben Jordan / Jerry Lawler vs New York Mauler
Ben Jordan is out for an interview. He's been put in a unique position, a young, relatively unproven wrestler getting a title shot. The studio crowd roundly boos him. It's time to turn Lawler. His heel promos have been so entertaining that they have in effect moved the crowd to his side. Lawler is out to completely bury Ben Jordan's chances, and gets crowd support when he points out that he's a joke challenger. Lawler complains that if the USWA doesn't slow down on his title defenses, he'll start just defending once every 30 days. He calls Ben Jordan a jobroni, and Jordan responds by warning Lawler not to take him lightly. Lawler isn't happy until he has completely humiliated him on the mic. The theme music for the New York Mauler sounds awfully familiar. Say, who is that masked guy? I can't quite put my finger on it. Lawler isn't happy with this at all. Lawler tries to walk out, refusing to wrestle him, saying he signed to wrestle a jobroni. Valiant keeps sneaking the mask off to smile at everyone, which is funny. The crowd keeps cheering for Lawler to make a comeback during the match in spite of everything. This is a much better Valiant match than normal, but it's hurt by the studio crowd not getting behind him at all because Lawler has the support. Lawler does a really good job of carrying things in spite of that, and drops the USWA title to Valiant. This is in some ways a backdrop to get over the new USWA rules. When Lawler grabs a chair, Dave Brown astutely points out that he better not bring that chair in the ring unless he wants a technical loss. They go to a time limit draw, so the ref is out to enforce sudden death rules. The first wrestler knocked off of his feet is the new champ, which Eddie Marlin comes out to remind everyone of. The last few minutes of this are really dramatic, with both guys slugging it out and doing everything they can not to fall. Good finish too! This is in some ways the best Lawler performance so far -- doing great promo work, carrying a limited opponent, getting over new rules and working some drama in the final few minutes that gets over really well. I think they were having trouble drawing at this point, so getting over the new rules on TV was an attempt to maybe let their fans know they were going to cut down on the non-finishes. Nice piece of business, and a solid match too! Not much of an isolated segment, but when you see everything that has happened all year in the USWA before this, it really stands out in a positive way.

[1990-04-28-WWF-Superstars] Brother Love: Hulk Hogan
Brother Love's introduction of Hogan is tremendous. This is Hogan's first appearance on WWF TV since Wrestlemania. I LOVE that they waited a few weeks to have him show up, as it really helps get big wins and losses over when they have time to sink in. Vince goes out of his way on commentary to point out that Hogan looks better than ever, and this seems to be designed to let the fans know that Hulkamania is alive and well. Brother Love claims Earthquake was responsible for Hogan losing the title because of the splash at the end of the Bravo match a few weeks in advance. These two have great chemistry and play off of each other so well in this great segment, to a point where Brother Love as a manager sending people after Hogan wouldn't have been the worst thing in the world.

Gene Okerlund is reading all about Hulk Hogan's children's vitamins. They show a clip of Bad News Brown being interviewed. Gene has found out his birthday, and Bad News isn't crazy about him knowing that. He presents him with a birthday present. It's a rubber snake, which freaks him out. Bad News demands answers and wants to know who gave him that snake. Meanwhile, Jake reveals that the gift was from him. He says he was just trying to make him happy, since he always has such a chip on his shoulder.

[1990-04-20-USWA Texas] Jerry Lawler vs Jeff Jarrett
I have never seen Flair cut promos during a match or play hide-the-chain, and he's not really a big staller. He does give his opponents too much, but he's also far more aggressive in the ring than Lawler. The same criticisms about not wrestling strong enough can be applied, yes, but at least Flair kept the match moving. With Lawler, the problem isn't really similar to some with Flair, where he's simply outclassed by his opponent, gives him too much of the match, sells the same for everyone regardless of card placement, etc. With Lawler, it's not that he gives his opponents too much of the match. It's more that he doesn't give off the image of anyone who is any more fundamentally sound in the ring than Terrence Garvin, which we know isn't true. Lawler doesn't ever really hit the mat, or execute a move, or ... "wrestle" very much at all. He throws punches and hides a chain. I know that's not a popular opinion, but it's hard to watch these matches and not acknowledge that. I agree with everything Pete said.

[1990-04-23-AWA] Ric Flair promos / Twin Wars commercial
Ric Flair in the AWA? Yep. Flair and Woman hype Flair's arrival in the Twin Cities. Flair talks about his history with Verne Gagne. Flair seems especially excited to be a traveling champ again. This is followed by some waaay over-the-top graphics hyping Twin Wars to the tune of "The Final Countdown". Minnesota will explode! Seriously!

[1990-04-22-NWA-Main Event] Midnight Express vs Rock & Roll Express
Great match! I think Tim covered this very well and there's not much I would add. That referee spot ... wow. In the spirit of keeping the surprise, I won't spoil it either, but wow. I wonder if they requested Nick Patrick to referee their matches, because he's done a great spot or exchange in two matches they've had so far on this yearbook.

[1990-04-21-USWA-Championship Sports] Steve Austin vs Frogman LeBlanc / Interview: Steve Austin
Before the match, Austin introduces a woman named Jeanne - "the sexiest girl in the world" and his new valet. She says it's wonderful to be there with a real man like Steve. This is what we saw Adams' reacting to in the earlier segment. Chris Adams is out and gets in an argument with Jeanne. She ends up slapping him. He walks away, but looks like there's about to be hell to pay. Austin makes easy work of "Frog Legs LeBlanc", as Ronnie P. Gossett calls him. Post-match, Marc Lowrance asks Jeanne why she slapped Chris Adams and she simply says no comment.

[1990-04-21-USWA-Championship Sports] Kevin Von Erich vs Matt Borne / Matt Borne and Kerry Von Erich
JIP battle of barefoot guys. Both guys are babyfaces at this point. Borne ends up pinning Kevin using the ropes for leverage. This was from the night before. Borne does a really terrific interview teasing his heel turn but not quite going all the way just yet. Kerry interrupts him and wants to know why he held the ropes. He's one of the best wrestlers this country has ever had! Kerry tells him he loves him like a *bleep*. Uh, what? Borne can talk really well and carries this argument. Borne takes exception to Kerry telling him he's been a little off since he locked himself in his house to watch Tony Borne matches (Whaa??) and Matt wants to get him in the ring, but Kerry walks away. Borne is NOT happy.

[1990-04-21-USWA-Championship Sports] Chris Adams, Eric Embry, Ronnie P. Gossett, Terrence Garvin & Percy Pringle
Segments are slightly out of order, but the Austin/Adams feud has heated up in a big way. Austin brought out Jeanne Clark, Adams' ex-wife in the previous segment. Ronnie P. Gossett feels the need to rub salt on the wounds. Adams wants Austin in the ring, but Austin is already scheduled to face Eric Embry the next week. Adams calls Embry out to try to get him to give up the match. Embry and Gossett end up having words, and Gossett explains that he is a manager with a heart condition and cannot accept Embry's challenge to wrestle. Terry Garvin is out to defend Gossett's honor. It's hard to figure out exactly what everyone is going on about, but this is very much like the Vince Russo 20-minute promo with everyone coming out while everyone else is talking and everything ending with a match being made.
