[1990-04-01-WWF-Wrestlemania VI] Interview: Roddy Piper
Roddy Piper has half of his entire body painted black in one of the weirdest interviews ever. Talk about 3 1/2 feet-long nostril hair.

[1990-04-01-WWF-Wrestlemania VI] Demolition vs Andre the Giant & Haku
Last few minutes. Ax is working face in peril when we join the match. There's something off about the look, feel and sound of the Sky Dome on this show. It's a large crowd, but the camera angle and crowd noise doesn't really emphasize that very much. Demolition regain the tag titles after Andre gets stuck in the ropes and Haku falls victim to a Demolition Decapatation. Post-match, Heenan berates Andre. Andre finally has enough and slaps him around. He's officially a babyface. Haku is waiting from behind to attack him, but Andre runs him off too. This seems like it should have gotten a louder reaction. Again, something wasn't quite right in the way the show was filmed.

[1990-04-01-FMW] Atsushi Onita & Tarzan Goto vs Masanobu Kurisu & Dragon Master (Texas Street Fight)
This got some MOTY support in 1990 and is a match I've always wanted to check out. This was a really great brawl, even better when you consider the context of the time. Onita doing his big tope to start things off is awesome, as is Kurisu attacking Onita with his cowboy boot. It feels very Wild West and chaotic, like four guys were just looking for a place to settle some really big differences, and just happened to find this ring to do it in. Dragon Master in particular is my favorite guy other than Onita, going after Onita with reckless abandon, stumbling over himself with splashes of blood all over his t-shirt. Everything he did looked wonderfully sloppy. This is probably the best match I've seen Onita have. I love that it's over in 10:58 too!

Cactus/Gilbert was outstanding. With Q1 down, WCW has been the best in-ring promotion in the world by a pretty healthy margin.

[1990-03-31-TWA-Spring Spectacular] Jerry Lawler vs Kerry Von Erich
I wish I could hear the Lawler fan insults, because the crowd is rolling every time he does one. I like that Kerry tricks Lawler into going back to the house mic so he can sneak up on him and attempt a pin. That's quality Jerry Lawler scouting. This is a nothing match with Lawler just cutting a promo the whole time, and the more I see of Lawler matches like this, the more it keeps him out of GOAT conversations. We do get some fire throwing though.

I didn't mean to derail the spirit of this, as people are obviously interested. Please disregard my wisecracks. I stand by what I said, but this wasn't the thread to post it in.

[1990-03-31-TWA-Spring Spectacular] D.C. Drake vs Larry Winters ('I Quit')
It's not the most high-tech thing in the world, but I'm pleasantly surprised that there's a video package to give me a little background before the match starts. Winters' arm is injured going into the match and Drake goes after it right away, wrapping it around the ringpost and planting it under a table that he smashes multiple times with a chair. They end up brawling into the upper level and Drake teases throwing Winters off the balcony to the shock of the crowd. They work this like a dramatic movie scene instead of as a "holy shit!" moment. Just the idea of teasing it gives the shock value without having to do the bump. There is a lot of downtime in this, as Drake leaves Winters in the balcony and walks back downstairs and down to the ring, and Winters later follows him. But even that sort of works in a weird way, because it's this dramatic attempt from Winters to return to the ring. This is proto-ECW because of the setting, and because the "DC SUCKS" chant sounds vaguely like "E-C-DUB", but it's not worked like an ECW match at all. They take some pretty safe spots and make them seem awfully dangerous. A hammerlock slam on the floor looks legitimately painful to me. Drake, who I think is working a vampire gimmick, gnaws on Winters' arm a few times. Winters offense looks really weak. Even when he does the right things, it looks pretty bad. This feels like Japanese indy sleaze way more than it does a U.S. indy match. I understand the nominations, as it doesn't feel like anything else going on at the time, even though it's a pretty bad match.

Why? You'll just respond by whining about snowflakes and workrate.

There's a difference between being zany and being a bad person. And European politics are not American politics. Rape is not like riding a bicycle, although it's possible that once you learn how you never forget, I guess.

Linda McMahon for Senate catch-all thread
90% of our elected officials have used the N-word on WWE programming and don't consider their wrestlers employees?

I don't even think Vince could beat John Edwards.

Linda McMahon for Senate catch-all thread
Look at Minnesota's record of elected officials. It's a zany group of people that is more reflective of the state's political climate than anything else. It's such a bizarre state that I hesitate to apply precedent there. Vince was accused of raping a woman in the early 90s. It would come up again. Vince isn't just *accused* of racism. He called Booker T "my nigga" on pay-per-view. That would end up in ads for months. I'm shocked that we're having this conversation.

Being a racist rapist can be overcome?

Linda McMahon for Senate catch-all thread
Vince has no patience for the media, can't have his ideas challenged without reacting aggressively, and is a war profiteer and drug addict that has fired people who are good in media settings and would be happy to cut ads against him. He hired a doctor to dispense illegal drugs so his wrestlers could look more muscular, and is an accused rapist. He has built an infrastructure that allows him to fuck women who work for him without fear of reprisal, and there is video footage of him using the N-word on WWE programming. He doesn't provide health care to his wrestlers, and doesn't even consider them employees. And you think he would be a good candidate? Come on.

Greg Valentine
There is a 25-minute Flair/Valentine handheld from 1980 mixed in with the Mid Atlantic garbage tapes. I've always meant to watch it. If Valentine goes to JCP in 1988, I see him feuding with Pillman in 1989, and probably having some TV matches with Zenk. I could actually see a feud between him and Rick Steiner being interesting.

[1990-03-31-USWA-Championship Sports] Interview: Eric Embry & Percy Pringle
Marc Lowrance mentions Eric Embry visiting his church recently to speak to everyone. Oh my. Percy explains that Embry was offered a contract for Gary Young, which he signed immediately. However, he was also given 5-6 other contracts, which he signed in a huff without reading, so they have no idea what is going to happen now. Really strong Embry promo, which makes me wish this run had not been cut short.
