[1990-03-09-USWA Texas] Jeff Jarrett & Bill Dundee vs Billy Joe Travis & Terrence Garvin
It's interesting how they used Garvin in the USWA - as a guy who was still learning the ropes and wasn't quite ready to step in the ring with the top stars yet, but who kept antagonizing top stars. They work that into the layout here. Garvin spends the whole match running from the babyfaces while Travis tries to pull double duty for his team. We get a "Faggot!" chant. Classy. Fun stuff on the heel side with Garvin refusing to tag in unless the babyfaces were in trouble. Travis continues to look really good. Akbar has Steve Austin and Jeff Gaylord attacking Dundee in the aisle way before Jarrett runs them off, which results in a DQ. This match was consistent and hit the right points, but it didn't quite come together.

[1990-03-08] Entertainment Tonight: Superstar Graham & Bruno Sammartino
John Tesh narrates a video package talking about all of the health problems Superstar Graham has had as a result of years of steroid abuse. Graham says it's a conservative estimate to say 90% of all pro wrestlers use steroids. Bruno says he never touched steroids, but agreed with Graham about the percentage. Graham gives warnings about the risks he has faced, and yeah, there you go.

[1990-03-06-AJPW-Excite Series] Steve Williams & Terry Gordy vs Genichiro Tenryu & Stan Hansen
Last few minutes. Lots of heat, and probably worth checking out in full sometime. Doc and Gordy are destroying Tenryu's leg and Tenryu is desperate trying to fight them off. I wish we had included the whole thing. What is here makes it look like the best All Japan match of the year thus far. Hansen causes a DQ when he comes in with a chair to get Doc off of Tenryu's knee. But then he ends up turning on Tenryu, tying him to the ring ropes by his leg and having to be pulled off of him. JUMBO ends up coming to Tenryu's aid. Tenryu wants none of his help and starts fighting him off too. I like the angle. We've had a DQ and a countout so far in 1990 All Japan. I guess Misawa ushered in a new era in more ways than one.

[1990-03-06-AJPW-Excite Series] Tiger Mask vs Kenta Kobashi
I suppose this is the first-ever Misawa vs Kobashi singles match. Misawa horribly botches a neckbreaker early on. In spite of this getting some recommendations, I wasn't really expecting that memorable of a match, and we didn't really get one. This is one that needed to be on to see how the match evolved over the years from their first meeting. And Kobashi just works circles around Misawa in this. The match picks up a little when they start working to the finish. But without the historical factor, there's just not much to see here.

[1990-03-03-ICW-TV] Diamond District: Pink Assassin
They show a clip of the Pink Assassin, whose so impressive, what with his headscissors and eye raking, and not being able to sustain any offense for any length of time. 80s death-and-destruction synth music plays while they show this footage, and this gets increasingly bizarre. We missed The Wrestling School Dropout last week, but this week, The Pink Assassin is here. Pink Assassin works a very gay gimmick. I love, "You don't know a wristlock from a wristwatch? How does that sound, sassy?" He ends up getting attacked for daring to put his hands on whoever this host guy is. HOMOPHOBIA~!

[1990-03-03-ICW-TV] Tony Atlas, Paul E. Dangerously and Austin Idol
Tony Atlas explains to us what it takes to be a champion in another terrific promo. We cut back to Paul E. and whoever the ICW TV host is in the ICW studio. Paul E. talks about Paul Orndorff returning to wrestling, and does a good job putting his return over as a big deal. Great promo. We close things out with a music video of Austin Idol set to David Lee Roth's "Shy Boy". This looks like a video made in Memphis that they were just able to procure.

[1990-03-03-ICW-TV] Interview: Tony Atlas
Disc 6 is all about the great heel promos. Tony Atlas does a solid promo reminding Roadblock and Tom Pritchard that he *is* the ICW champ. Tom Pritchard makes him want to vomit, and Atlas promises him that he's in for a "good whuppin'". Lots of steroid references toward Roadblock. Remember when it was okay to mention steroids in promos?

[1990-03-03-NWA-World Championship Wrestling] Interview: Ric Flair / Interview: Lex Luger
Cornette and Ross have a fun discussion of the Wrestle War match between Flair and Luger. They obviously see things in different ways. We get post-match promos from Luger and Flair at Wrestle War. Luger does a really good promo explaining why he gave up the world title win to save Sting. Flair says he's Luger's master and Sting's master. Flair warns Luger that if he rides with Sting, he dies with Sting. Doing the promos right after the match and airing them over the weekend was a really cool touch. We wrap up with a PO box address where fans can send get well wishes to Sting.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Ken Raper
Lawler is feeling confident, and wrestles the match in street clothes. Lawler wrestling in all black like this is an awesome visual. He makes quick work of Raper and the Jerry Lawler Hour of Destruction finally ends.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Chris Champion
Chris Champion is out in a neckbrace, and says he's never been beaten up like Lawler beat him up last week. He says he could have handled himself in a fight, but Lawler attacked him from behind. He'd love to get Lawler in the ring and get even, but his doctor told him one wrong landing will kill him. But when he's healthy again, he's going to get Lawler, no matter where it happens to be. Lawler comes out and tells him he has to have a brain to have a concussion, so no way does he have a concussion. Lawler tells him he's safe, because he doesn't want the death of Chris Champion on his hands. So he's not going to hit him on the head, but he has no problem smacking him in the face. He smacks Champion around for a while and ends up attacking him with a chair. He goes for a piledriver on a chair, and Marlin tells him if he does that piledriver, he's done in Memphis for good. Lawler stops at that point and decides to just punch him in the face and then hit him with a chair again. Lawler finally stops and the locker room clears to take Champion out, and Lawler throws a stool at him on the way out for good measure! Such an incredible angle. But the one thing that's disappointing about this is that there was no knight in shining armor standing by and waiting to defend all of the people who had been wronged. Lawler is good enough in this run that a fresh babyface coming into the territory who could have kept up with him could have been a difference maker, but such a guy didn't exist. One of those times when wrestling suffers because the talent pool is more shallow than it was a few years prior.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Nate
Nate is back with chocolate pie in an attempt to cheer up Jerry Lawler. Lawler doesn't seem too interested, and says he doesn't want Nate talking about his personal life on television. He also says he didn't ask for this pie, and whenever he wants something, he'll get it himself. Lawler ends up saying since he got it, he must have been the one to want the pie. He ends up throwing the entire pie at him and covering him with the milk. Now that he's done all of this, Lawler is suddenly cheered up. Nate reaches his breaking point and quits. Lawler says he ain't quittin' nothin', he's going to mop up this mess, then he's fired. Lawler shoves him, and he shoves Lawler back, which prompts Lawler to beat the hell out of him. Eddie Marlin has to come out to break the whole thing up. Lawler is such an asshole jerk in this, and I wish heels were this despicable in wrestling now.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Jerry Lawler ... and a word from Jimmy Valiant
Dave Brown gets in a pot shot, asking if Christie Brinkley has called to express sympathy for him dropping the title. Lawler is out with Nate the Rat and is a little grumpy. We get some awesome sponsorship, as Lawler asks why they haven't replaced the studio furniture he destroyed the week before. Brown says these things take time, and Lawler calls him an idiot, and says if he called Royal Furniture, this stuff would be delivered quickly. He calls them while on the air, and makes arrangements to get the furniture quickly. I can't tell you how clever that is. Lawler recaps the match, saying he should have been DQd long before Valiant got the win, in which case he would still be champion. Hooray for Honesty. He wants Valiant out, but Valiant isn't there, but Dave cuts to a videotape. Valiant goes crazy, making a bunch of weird noises and making fun of JERRY THE KING LOSER. He PREACHES, getting on his knees about how much he loves the city where his mama and baby were born.

[1990-03-03-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Jimmy Valiant
Clip from MSC. Lawler goes for his chain, but Valiant had already stolen it from him without his knowledge. He decks Lawler with it, and then Valiant beats him at his own game, tossing the chain before the referee can find it. Valiant finally wins the USWA title to the delight of the crowd.

[1990-03-02-USWA Texas] Jerry Lawler vs Jimmy Valiant
Jimmy Valiant makes a crazy production of his entrance, even going all through the Sportatorium crowd and dancing. Someone holds up a picture of Valiant wearing a t-shirt that says Big Mama's Flowers, which cracks me up. Valiant kisses the referee before the match starts and Lawler demands an automatic DQ that he doesn't get. Lawler insists on him taking the doorag off his head. Valiant complies, but wipes it on his ass and chases Lawler around the ring with it. Lawler ends up hiding behind the referee, and Valiant starts spanking the ref! Then, Valiant kisses the cameraman, who gets an on-screen graphic that says "Skip Collins - Cameraman. Kissed By Valiant." Tremendous. Lawler keeps complaining about the counts he gets when trying pin attempts. The referee obliges his request the next time around, but he's always in the opposite position and he gets furious. This match is 100% stalling and bullshit, but it's entertaining stalling and bullshit. We also get a funny Marc Lowrance quote: "Jerry Lawler has been known to store can openers, slugs and other paraphernalia in his trunks."

[1990-03-02-NWA-Power Hour] Louisville Slugger: Kevin Sullivan, Buzz Sawyer & Cactus Jack
J-Tex is disbanded, which is yet another the Horsemen turn was poorly timed. But now, we do have Sullivan's Slaughterhouse, which is a fun collection of crazy guys. Poor Cactus just cannot talk at this point. Luckily, Kevin Sullivan is there, an always reliable promo. Buzz Sawyer is acting more like the Buzz of old, so he seems to be back in his element. Sullivan angles them as guys who want to take on both babyfaces and heels, which is an interesting idea and could have probably been taken much farther. To quote Cornette, "their meatloaf isn't all baked".
