  1. Local promo for the Evansville market hyping JYD vs Soul Taker. Oh my, can you imagine that match?
  2. Local promo for the Evansville market hyping a Lawler/Travis vs Jarrett/Dundee match.
  3. This match capped off the highest rated weekend of wrestling TV on TBS in a long time. I don't remember the exact number, but Dave tirelessly cited it to defend Flair as a booker. It is the last weekend of TV under Flair's booking, so maybe that's worth remembering as we go through the year. Very good match. It's like the Rock & Rolls never left. Flair and Arn know exactly what spots to call to show them at their best. Morton is a guy I've argued as Flair's best opponent, and Arn has always worked well with them too. Flair gets accidentally cut at a certain point in the match and he starts bleeding really badly, which the camera tries to avoid.
  4. Bill Dundee music video to "Gypsies on Parade" by Sawyer Brown. There are some great old clips included in this.
  5. Another great Flair match! I like the Eaton one slightly more, but this one has a more rabid crowd. They beat the hell out of each other with really stiff chops. It's a very surface-level match, meaning it's more that they just trade really good looking blows for most of this instead of laying out a match with meaningful momentum shifts. But it still works like a charm and the atmosphere was electric. Post-match, Luger gives his answer to the Horsemen by slugging all three of them as the show goes off the air. They did what they could and produced a hot show.
  6. Lex Luger makes his first appearance on the yearbook, and this is the first time a yearbook has really caught him at his peak. Before he can even get a full sentence out, the Horsemen are out as a unit. Ole does the talking for the group, and they put the pressure on Luger to bow out of the match with Flair at Wrestle War. They demand an answer by the end of the show. Luger assures them they'll get it. Funny moment when Flair trips leaving the ring and Luger has trouble keeping a straight face. Another great segment. Hate to see the Luger heel run come to an end, but they really didn't have a lot of options with this little time to build a strong main event.
  7. Sting does his first interview post-injury. I don't know if they exaggerated for effect, but he originally was going to be out 6 - 12 months. Sting gives his endorsement to Luger, despite the two of them not being friends, and says he may be at ringside at Wrestle War.
  8. Pillman wants to talk to Flair and get an explanation for why he turned on Sting. Flair is out - with Woman for the first time - and gets cocky with Pillman. Woman tells Pillman he doesn't know the difference men and boys. He assures Woman that he does, and that he also knows the difference between a lady and a tramp! Flair takes exception and tells Pillman now he's gotta step in the ring later tonight! Great segment.
  9. Pretty one-sided for the babyfaces, and not as much heat as you typically get from Midnight Express matches, but it still has its moments. The bigger highlight is Chris Cruise and Terry Funk on commentary. The MX go overboard to make Pillman and Zenk look good, but the Rock & Rolls match is much better. Cornette eating the sleeper from Tom Zenk gets the biggest pop of the match.
  10. It's that time again! He gets in a black female fan's face, asking if she's a lady. She responds by saying "I don't know. Are you a man?" in a moment that made me laugh out loud. This is a blast.
  11. Lawler tears into a fan who writes him a letter to ask why he calls himself a world champion when his championship is only recognized in Memphis and Dallas. He brought along Sports Review Wrestling to make his point that shows color photos of him beating guys in other places. He also shows PWI, where he is consistently a Top 10 wrestler in the world. He also shows a magazine from Japan that looks to have photos of his match against Fujinami from '89. Pretty effective way to avoid the question. He also gets in some shots against Flair and Hogan, calling them "company champions", not guys who will wrestle outside of their home promotion.
  12. Clip from MSC. Every Memphis Finish Ever. Lawler pins Cobra with a hidden chain (I'm growing tired of this finish after 6 yearbooks). But Jerry Calhoun finds the chain and restarts the match. JYD pins Soultaker quickly after a restart. Lawler is not happy about this back in the studio. JYD sends in a taped promo pointing out that he has a little bit of twisted steel, and no sex appeal at all! Lawler wants to know if anyone understood anything he said. He said he traced JYD's family tree back to when he used to live in one!
  13. Ted DiBiase has paid off Akeem and Slick to get rid of Boss Man. Good segment. I like how they did Boss Man's face turn.
  14. I remember why I hated Hogan so much as a kid watching these. "We" ... he pretends he's representing a collective when it's all just a lie that only exists to support him. Warrior isn't as self-absorbed, but he is in his own world.
  15. Actually, it never was out of control. Lord knows I have the rep for pointing out Flair's flaws. But I've also always said he was a great worker. "Out of control" would be the equiv that happened to Angle and Toyota. People extremely critical of them won't even listen to arguments that they're "great". That's coming from someone who has no love for Angle, and was annoyed by Toyota before... well... 100% of the other US joshi fans of the era. But the "hate" that I've seen tossed at the work of Angle and Toyota isn't remotely close to what's been tossed at Flair. What happens is that when one of my/your/our favorites is criticized, it's the biggest thing in the world and the people critical are big meanies full of hate. When it's someone we don't give two shits about (say Ultimate Warrior), we kind of laugh about it and move along. So we remember the criticism of our favorite in sharp terms, like it's out of control. When really... it's not. The criticism of Flair really wasn't/isn't at the Angle/Toyota/Davey Richards level. His fans are just resistant to the criticism, a bit like those Davey Richards fans that folks like to drive crazy by pointing out what they see as his shitty work. John It stands out because Ric Flair invented spot fu on one hand and sat in holds in matches with Brody and Sting on the other hand. It was unclear what his critics wanted from him, as he was a little damned if he did, damned if he didn't. That's not say some of the criticism of Flair wasn't valid. I always thought you were fair, even when critical. But did Frank ever say anything complimentary about him? Did Chris Coey? Because I sure don't remember it if they did.
  16. More of a wild scene than a good match, but worth watching. There's more wrestling here than you'd think, and Kurisu is solid, but this is pretty gory. FMW would specialize in these things later in the decade, but this is an interesting look at a primitive version of their ideas. Fun to see how Onita became Onita.
  17. Probably the first singles match these two ever had. Kind of long and uneventful, and quickly breaks out into a Hart Foundation/Rockers brawl with a non-finish. I don't understand why the WWF - not exactly a bastion of babyface feuds at the time - always wanted to pit these teams against each other.
  18. Jarrett is better than usual, and Dundee is really good. We cut to a taped promo with Kerry that sadly isn't as nonsensical as usual.
  19. Lawler does yet another great promo, this time hyping a six-man tag of Lawler/Travis/Garvin vs Dundee/Jarrett/Kerry. It's hard to give each of these the praise they deserve without sounding repetitive, but yeah, this is awesome.
  20. Captain Lou and Bruno Sammartino plug a 900 line to play wrestling trivia. Win a Nintendo, a power glove and a collection of wrestling's greatest hits!
  21. Interested in being a pro wrestling star? Pick up the ABCs of Professional Wrestling! I'd love to see this video at some point.
  22. Flair, Arn and Ole are great at doing heel interviews, but this still killed some enthusiasm. That said, I'll try to get over it, since there is still lots of good stuff ahead in spite of that.
  23. Very good match, especially when Eaton and Morton are in. From the U.S. tag title tournament. The MX win and make it to the next round.
  24. A commercial airs for Bill Dundee's wrestling school with an address for how to get more information. Lawler can't stop laughing at the idea of a Bill Dundee School of Wrestling.
