I think the joke was that Turner is nuts not a druggie. But the irony is still there, for obvious reasons. I always took at as a drug thing from the context of the digs. "Jane, where's my lithium?" in that one Billionaire Ted skit stands out, as does a Vince media interview from that period where he seemed like he was framing it as a drug thing (I think the word "abuse" may have been used).

I always thought the lithium thing was a pretty low blow, especially since he made it sound like Turner was taking tranquilizers to get high as opposed to the truth (it's a mood balancer used for bipolar disorder and mood swingers).

I think it was pure sports build being clearly better because UFC was not only outdrawing them by a lot on PPV, but also doing so with a relatively small TV viewershop.

I think we can agree that they bought him off, can't we? It could be that he's just really ... confused? In 2004 he wrote a letter the the WON which was at least semi-positive on the WWE. ("As the years pass, I even find myself in some way thankful to the company for that [getting rid of Phillips/Garvin], because it brought truth to all that I said").
