Ric Flair
With Rhodes and Flair, you can definitely see that those archetypes were tailor-made for the Southern blue collar audience which was the majority of their following. Which is to say that maybe the people putting on that product were more in tune with what was going on in that part of the country that a major network would have nary an idea about in comparison.

He stopped wearing them in WCW, though. In the ring at least.

So what's the latest on this? EDIT: I'll be damned, this is the latest.

Rick Martel
It was so odd seeing him work face when he was in WCW. I'd gotten so use to "The Model" gimmick, I didn't realize at the time that that may have been the only time in his career he was working heel. Is there a reason he was out for much of '91? He's not on much TV and no PPV at all between WM 7 and Royal Rumble '92.

WCW's Highway to Hell
I was thinking someone could make a comp (if they haven't already) of the best matches from this period.

The Boss, Man is he Big
Bossman was in 6 months before Hogan and challenging for a title on Starrcade. I don't mean to off-track this, but WCW had been wooing Hogan for most of '93. It's been said many times it was one of Bischoff's first objectives once he took over. By the time Traylor had come back, it was close to becoming a foregone conclusion that Hulk was eventually going to sign. On a personal note, I kind of saw it coming once I saw this.

All the better if part of this is Bruno playing them. If that's the case, he deserves every cent of that million bucks he'll get out of this. Even if it wasn't, there is still some justice in them paying him off like this.

Doing the job is probably why they had him originally win the King of the Ring that Austin won (and the rest is history...)

[1996-03-24-WCW-Uncensored] Sting & Booker T vs Road Warriors (Chicago Street Fight)
Watched this yesterday, and one thing stuck out. Dusty makes reference to the camera crew a few times, and says that "the truck is rockin' tonight". You almost never hear anything to this effect on WWE programming. Past or present. Only time I can think of is in the '92 Rumble when Bobby talks about the (genuinely) good camera work.

Rick Martel
He's in a book about the day John Lennon was killed, written by Keith Elliot Greenberg (who's written several WWE books in the past). Rick talked about working MSG that night, and that once he found out the news he knew that he was having his match at the time Lennon was shot. Afa told him the news and Rick sat at the bar with the heels and some fans, watching the news.

[1990-11-22-WWF-Survivor Series] Hulk Hogan & Ultimate Warrior & Tito Santana vs Rick Martel & Hercules & Paul Roma & Warlord & Ted DiBiase
Now you got me thinking as to other years after they could have done this 91: Flair and The Nasty Boys vs. Jim Duggan, Sgt. Slaughter, Tito Santana, Kerry Von Erich, Big Bossman and LOD. Not exactly much opportunity for a FIP spot. 93: All the face teams won that year, actually. Not sure how you could split it up. 94: Razor Ramon vs. Bam Bam Bigelow, King Kong Bundy, Jerry Lawler and his midgets. 95: In looking at the card, what would make the most sense is Shawn Michaels, Ahmed Johnson, British Bulldog & 123 Kid vs. Undertaker, Savio Vega, Fatu & Henry Godwinn. 96: Again, all faces survived that year. Would have been interesting to put Rock in a situation where him and another face were against a whole team with him coming out strong at the end. Could have squashed some of the heat that would come his way later.

Plus I would imagine this (and Backlund getting inducted, too) will get some decent press in the NYC sports media as well, leading up to it.

He worked more in the Midwest and West Coast, when he wasn't with McMahon right?

The misogynist guy he was in WWE before he left for WCW was the low point of the Attitude Era for me.

I don't think they even show the truncated version on USA now, last year they just had it on the WM DVD.

This is going to be a big coup for their PR if they milk this the right way. Bruno's comments on the Wellness Program particularly.

That's a no-brainer. Reading the article, it makes the most sense. Unless they can attract someone like Zbyszko or Graham to do it, Paul seems the obvious choice. And frankly, he kind of deserves that much for essentially making this happen.
