  1. I get the feeling I'm going to appreciate this thread more and more, than actually listening to the show. Not a knock on either guy, but the kind of confrontational tone the show takes could get on my nerves very easily.
  2. Prichard's version of Heenan leaving is that his terms could have been met if he requested to be paid as an employee of the company as opposed to an "independent contractor", to which Vince probably would have agreed but Bobby was set on leaving regardless.
  3. I've said this about Heenan but it applies to Okerlund just as much, but that the WWF lost way more in the both of them in 1993 than almost any other wrestler leaving except Hogan. Even when he was in WCW, getting long in the tooth and maybe a little inebriated, he was still miles ahead of anybody else suited for the job.
  4. Piper had matches with Curt Hennig in Portland which I'm sure give anything else he's done a run for their money.
  5. Couldn't have said it any better. I think it's also fair to say that of anyone else in either the broadcast booth or holding the mic, nobody had the chemistry with Hogan that he had. Gene could get across the fact that he supported Hulk, and could help get across the angles at the same time. A sorely underrated moment during the heel turn at Bash At the Beach 96 is when Hogan turns more aggressive towards Okerlund with his usual shtick.
  6. I was at that show. I don't know how it played on TV, but the ovation was rather tepid for him and he looked way slimmed down compared to his halcyon days,
  7. I'm as far from an expert on athleticism than I'd care to admit, but I've got to think Curt Hennig and Ted Dibiase's selling abilities puts them way up there.
  8. Listened to the Survivor Series '93 episode last night. I actually sided with Bruce when talking about dumping the idea of unmasking the knights during the Hart/Michaels match, when Terry Funk backed out at the last minute. The match was snakebit because of Lawler dropping out, but making it all about Bret and Owen was the major takeaway and thus good enough as it was. I'm surprised they skipped over the Rock n Roll Express/Heavenly Bodies match.
  9. I'm loathe to even bring up his name here, but Mancow Muller is a guy who I think is or was a genuine mark. He was syndicated in my area on our main alt-rock station for a couple years and I can remember him talking about Montreal like it was national news. He was also a presenter at the 1997 Slammys and had people on his show, particularly Bobby Heenan I remember.
  10. Now the question is if Cena and Bryan stand firm on this, or decide to take one for the team and try and fill what was a pretty important spot on the card.
  11. Did he do it out of opposition to the war? I've seen him speak about it, but just got the feeling he didn't want to travel overseas during the holidays.
  12. Anyone listen to this show? I got a little into it recently after hearing Joe Rogan mention it on his interview with DDP.
  13. What was Bruce's response to the whole thing of Stephanie saying 9/11 was like living through the federal trial?
  14. He was getting old too
  15. It's opposite the problem a few of these promotions had in the wake of the WWF getting huge, running in places like New York or Chicago and not keeping things at home to where the demand can meet the supply. Flair always says running Chicago instead of Greensboro for Starrcade was the beginning of the end. In the case of the Von Erichs they had the demand because they were drawing such good ratings with their syndicated show. It would have at least made sense of something like breaking away from the NWA.
  16. I think at the end of one of his MSG matches, Gorilla refers to him as "Ricky The Dragon Steamboat". That's about it I'm sure.
  17. I would have liked to have seen a guy lose a haircut match, but eventually come around to the idea that he looks better bald. I think Bobby Heenan should have won at least one weasel suit match. Preferably against the Ultimate Warrior.
  18. From my limited perspective I feel kind of sorry for him. He's good in the ring and not as bad on the mic as some guys who were in his same spot. Fans do turn on everyone when they're on top, and it's always kind of been that way but it seems like it happens WAY quicker than it used to.
  19. Anyone have an idea who Arman Hussian was? The H&H. Ltd stable is an interesting idea, two managers but I can certainly see why it didn't catch on.
  20. I stopped watching mid-way through that promo, I ought to catch the rest of it. Hennig flies like a bat out of hell out of the ring at one point.
  21. The Great Khali makes a brief appearance in the new extended version of Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life
  22. Cena over Hansen easily. Even though I'd always liked him, I huffed and puffed a little when he was about to break Flair's record. Not that it really matters anyway, but I think if there is anyone to be an equal to the kind of work Flair put in "back in the day" it's John. More than just his consistent in-ring work, his work behind the scenes and with Make-A-Wish and all the PR he has done and continues to do, he's been the perfect ambassador for WWE more than anyone else, even Hogan in his day. Angle over Goldberg, not so easily but a quick decision anyway. It continues to impress me how easy the transition it was for Kurt compared to other professional athletes, especially since by all accounts he never grew up a fan. He found his way through being endlessly self-deprecating, yet still every bit the Olympic champ when that bell rang. Goldberg was a lot of hype, fun to watch, but in the end a very limited guy who still did make the best of it. Bryan over Hardy. WrestleMania 30 was a special night for me, when I enjoyed the modern product in a way I didn't for a very long time and Daniel Bryan was a big part of that. The momentum he had going into New Orleans was huge and I really felt like I was seeing the next centerpiece guy take his place. Batista over Edge, simply for how I can look back on some of his angles with people and correlate it with his acting ability. I saw the thing where he turned on Rey Mysterio from about a decade ago, and there is some mighty thick pathos to it that you normally didn't see. Fast-forward to something like his performance in Blade Runner 2049, where he gives you a deep impression with little time in a great movie that's almost 3 hours.
  23. The way he tells it, he was discovered by helping out Kerry in wrestling practice (despite not even being a coach at his school). He knew Fritz because he was a fan, and he was eventually hired as a referee. He said they made a big deal out of him being the youngest-ever referee since all of them at that point were usually just retired guys.
