Identity politics and wrestling
Drawing heat without being truly offensive can't be that hard, since heels managed to do it for decades. Again, I go back to the example of Stampede Wrestling getting thrown off TV after Iron Mike DiBiase cut a promo calling the fans stupid. The thing is, wrestling is escapist entertainment. People watch to get away from the bullshit in their daily lives, not to be reminded of it. That's why guys like Colonel DeBeers and Muhammad Hassan had go-away heat.

Current WWE
Goodell is the real-life equivalent of a heel authority figure, so that's a bad idea.

Larry the Cable Guy in a Rey Mysterio mask? It's like they're going out of their way to provoke this board.

Jumbo Tsuruta
I recently came across a Jumbo/Fritz Von Erich match on Dailymotion. Truth be told, it's not much of a match, but it's interesting to see how Jumbo carries himself in an all-out brawl as opposed to an NWA-style technical match. It also reminds me that Fritz needs a thread of his own.

WWE Suvivor Series 2014
I agree. People love him as a face. I liked him better as a heel. Zigger is awful as a heel. His lack of offense isn't really a big deal when he's getting his ass kicked for 90% of the match, but it becomes really noticeable when he has to work a control segment and busts out a million chinlocks.

WWE Suvivor Series 2014
Why? Because Randy Orton has gotten himself over again and a return to his hometown to end The Authority would have been much better than an old geriatric who hasn't been relevant in fifteen years. An Orton run-in, which would lead to nothing that hasn't already been done to death, would have been better than Sting making his first ever appearance in a WWE ring?

Stan Hansen
I guess I don't reside on Earth, since I don't like 4/14/83 or the retirement match at all. The only Funk/Hansen match I like is the 1985 one.

Vader
The best big men are the ones who do the high-flying athletic shit. When those moves land, it looks absolutely devastating, which adds to their monster aura. It also looks devastating when they miss, which is perfect for setting up the babyface comeback.

Rey Mysterio Jr.
The biggest problem with the 619 is that it just isn't believable that a headscissors or a drop toehold would incapacitate Rey's opponent long enough for him to land it.

2014 Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame thread
I don't think scrubbing the ballot is necessarily. There are no slam-dunk candidates left, and there aren't any coming down the pike in the foreseeable future. The only real effect this will have is to make it easier for marginal candidates (or worse, joke candidates like Big Daddy) to get in.

2014 Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame thread
Honestly, old-timers' hostility toward Colon is probably due more to him being a lousy payoff guy than to Brody.

Dave Meltzer stuff
Actually, steroids weren't added to the Controlled Substances Act until 1990.

2014 Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame thread
So the R&Rs are the only ones who made it in (EDIT: scratch that, Ray Fabiani also made it in). I continue to be baffled by Ivan Koloff's failure to get inducted. What possible argument is there against him? Also, it should be noted that Brock did great among reporters and historians but poorly among active and former wrestlers. That should put the final nail in the coffin of the "wrestlers are insecure legitimacy marks" argument.

Goldberg's WWE Run
I wouldn't say that HHH ruined Goldberg since the bloom was already off the rose by that point. But Goldberg didn't get over by getting screwed and looking vulnerable. He got over by destroying everything in his path. There was no need to reinvent the wheel.

Current WWE
I don't think there's anything about WWE's business practices I wouldn't believe. They've entered the Tyson Zone for me. If some newz site claimed that midcard pushes were based on whose tears Vince thought were the most delicious, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.

Current WWE
So according to Ricardo's shoot, Seth Rollins and Summer Rae both ended up with heat backstage for the grave offense of using ice packs. Apparently, they hadn't been around long enough to deserve them or something. This fucking company, man...

Terminology of match quality
All great matches are fun, but not all fun matches are great.

Kenta Kobashi
It's increasingly likely that I'll have Kobashi above Kawada on my ballot. I had always taken it as an article of faith that Kawada was the smart one and Kobashi was the dumb one when it came to stuff like structure and selling. But I'm starting to think that the opposite is closer to the truth. For all the talk about how Kobashi/Sasaki is a dumb match, it's differential calculus compared to Kawada/Sasaki.

Different styles of the NWA touring champ
The Observer back issue that was put up today contains Dave's Fritz Von Erich obit. Fritz was NWA president for a time in the 70s, so Dave talked a bit about how the NWA champion was booked. Under Muchnick, there were screwjobs and time limit draws, but the champion always won decisively in the end so there was no doubt that he was the best in the world. Under subsequent presidents, screwjobs became the rule rather than the exception, and the prestige of the belt steadily declined.

Terminology of match quality
I would define a fun match as one that you enjoy while you're watching it but have no real desire to revisit after you're done.

MOTYs by year
I figured this was worth a bump since we're almost at the the end of the year. At this point, I have no idea what my MOTY for 2014 is. I'd say it's between Shield/Wyatts and Atlantis/UG, with Okada/Ibushi as a dark horse pick.

Current WWE
You know, giving away the Network for free for the one month the creative team openly doesn't give a shit might not have been the smartest move.
