If nothing else, he's a much stronger candidate, in both absolute and relative terms, than Tanahashi was last year.

The Sheamus/Orton vs. Del Rio/Ziggler match on Raw stretched the formula to the breaking point. In it, Orton backdropped Del Rio out of the ring and then took an eternity to crawl to his corner so Del Rio could make it back into the ring and crawl to his corner for the simultaneous tag. It's like someone at WWE saw this thread and decided to fuck with us.

I don't think silly comedy in the undercard is a big deal as long as it's clearly segregated from the main event. I'd say one of the things that hurt Kurt Angle's drawing power was him constantly bouncing back and forth between harmless goofball and vicious killer.

Mark Henry didn't seem to have too much trouble getting over as a heel last year.

I thought the Invasion came about because the Booker T/Buff Bagwell match on Raw single-handedly torpedoed the WWF's plans to run WCW as a separate brand.

Kofi used to be the epitome of a guy I had no strong feelings about one way or another. But being subjected to his tag matches every week for months on end has made him my least favorite guy on the roster by a good margin. In fairness, he's marginally better than Truth in singles matches.

The problem isn't that the matches are similar structurally, it's that they're the same even in the details. Like, there are a ton of ways to set up a hot tag, but 99% of WWE tag matches only use one.

Actually, most WWE tag matches do have two FIP sections. Anyway, I'll co-sign this. WWE tag matches might be my least favorite thing in wrestling right now because they're so stale and formulaic. The simultaneous hot tag in particular is something that always drives me crazy. I get the idea behind it (the fresh heel comes in and tries to prevent the FIP from tagging out), but it almost never works out that way. One of the reasons I got into the Prime Time Players was that their matches tended to deviate from the formula. But working with Kofi has forced them back into the mold.
