Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
They needed three announcers and three "Legends" to fill out the Royal Rumble. This has disaster written all over it.

Brock is back
Think of all the indy guys who do shitty tributes to 90s All Japan. That doesn't mean they aren't marks for the stuff.

Brock is back
Well, there was the homage to Harley Race's bounty on Ric Flair.

Derivative Gimmicks
There's also the separate but related phenomenon of real-life fighters drawing inspiration from pro wrestling. Off the top of my head, you have Muhamamad Ali from Gorgeous George, Chael Sonnen from Superstar Billy Graham, and King Mo from Jerry Lawler.

WWF Ongoing Thread
Have you seen their 8/9/86 Boston Garden match? The last time I saw it, it blew me away. I'd rate it as a top 20 match in company history, possiibly top 10.

Brock is back
Maybe he's like Lyndon Johnson and is biding his time and making all the compromises he needs to to get into position to implement his agenda.

Dave Meltzer stuff
I was rather puzzled by Dave and Bryan saying on the radio show today that Cena had to go back to being happy-go-lucky because of the divorce. Aren't the people most likely to know about the divorce (that is, Internet fans/dirtsheet readers) the ones who hate Cena's goofball act the most?

[1994-03-20-WWF-Wrestlemania X] Bret Hart vs Owen Hart
If we're talking strictly 1994 Shawn, then I agree. It took him another year or so to become a complete wrestler. A big part of that was his moveset being more suited for working babyface, but I think his stuff looked more impactful as well. I also agree with the broader point. I very much prefer guys whose main goal is hurting or otherwise defeating their opponent over ones whose main goal is putting on a show.

Don't be so quick to judge. Raw really was historically shitty.

You mean the one about how everyone in the business without exception is on something?

If you want some serious heat, use an ether soaked rag.

Derivative Gimmicks
So were the Midnight Rockers. Come to think of it, the R&Rs themselves were derivative of the Fabulous Ones. On that note, look at all the face-painted tag teams that sprung up in response to the Road Warriors (Demolition, Blade Runners, Powers of Pain). Going in a completely different direction, Hikari Fukuoka was largely a Manami Toyota clone.

The Beginner's Guide To Lucha Libre
Would it be possible to split the singles matches in OJ's primer into title matches and stipulation matches? They're two completely different styles. Also, a question. Are there any notable lucha matches based around targeting a body part? I know the psychology is different in Mexico, but I figured I'd ask.

Dave Meltzer stuff
I don't think they'll do Brock/Taker. At this point, Taker is too brittle to do more than one match a year, and isn't Brock/Rock penciled in for Mania?

Dave says that either it gets nasty or Cena gets taken to the cleaners. But probably not both.

The quote was in the context of Val saying that one of Russo's strengths was having everyone from the top down was involved in a meaningful storyline. Still a ridiculous assertion. It's a 1999 Timeline video, but there's also footage of him talking about the Eddy/Angle match at Wrestlemania XX for some reason.

[1994-03-27-AJW-Wrestling Queendom] Aja Kong & Bull Nakano vs Akira Hokuto & Shinobu Kandori
I liked this match, but not nearly as much as Loss. One the one hand, just about any match with both Aja Kong and Shinobu Kandori is going to be worthwhile. On that note, I still haven't seen anything that indicates that Bull was better than Aja. But this has the same problems that plague most joshi matches: terrible submission work, crappy transitions, and little or no long-term selling. Beyond that, I couldn't really muster any sympathy for Hokuto due to her being such an unlikable bitch.

Well, Cena's wife has lawyered up. And not just any lawyer, the one who represented Linda Hogan. Yes, Cena has a prenup. But so did Tiger Woods.

[1994-03-27-AJW-Wrestling Queendom] Manami Toyota vs Plum Mariko
I've never seen a single Plum Mariko match, but Lorefice said in his Plum obit that she wasn't a strong mat wrestler and got her submissions through athletic counters rather than outmaneuvering opponents on the mat. EDIT: Having seen the submission match, I'd say that's accurate. Plum wasn't a Yoshida-caliber mat worker.

[1994-03-20-WWF-Wrestlemania X] Bret Hart vs Owen Hart
At the risk of sidetracking this thread (feel free to break it off), I don't know that Steamboat was significantly more graceful than Shawn. For one thing, I always thought his overhead chop from the top rope looked goofy as hell. And saying that Shawn didn't work from underneath enough strikes me as a rather novel criticism. The most common complaint is that he spent most of the match getting his ass kicked and then Jesused up and made the comeback. It's true that he didn't get as many flash pins as Steamboat (although he did go for quite a few), but that's countered somewhat by the fact that he had the Sweet Chin Music as his great equalizer. I'll have a detailed review of Bret/Owen in my ***** match thread, but I'll just start by saying that it's great. The Austin matches are better, but it's still easily a top ten match in WWF/E history.

I've heard lots of good things about Sami Callihan, but he's probably too small for the WWE.

Gay marriage and pro wrestling
Gay marriage is at risk of becoming the Lex Luger of political issues. It's a huge draw among certain segments of the fanbase, but if it keeps getting jobbed out in every main event it appears in, promoters may stop considering it worth the effort to try to get it over.

From the most recent F4W: This sounds awful.
