The Thread Killer Talks Too Much: The Recaps
That happened in December of 2003. They descended into a blizzard while stopping in Russia to refuel and came dangerously close to running out of fuel before they were able to land. Supposedly, there were three attempted landings that were called off because the pilots couldn't agree on where the runway was. All the while, the plane was being battered by turbulence so severe it got knocked sideways. I actually heard that Flair was freaking out, which is what really caused everyone to worry. There was a longstanding belief among wrestlers that flying with Flair was completely safe because the odds of someone being in a plane crash twice were slim to none. Of course, that's a textbook example of the gambler's fallacy. As far as dumb things wrestlers believe, though, that's pretty far down the list.

WWE Royal Rumble 2021
Here's a stat WWE commentators probably won't be parroting any time soon: One of the two was Otis, who is 29 and a midcard comedy goof. The other was Dominik Mysterio, who is only there to keep his dad from going to AEW. BUILDING NEW STARS

Cactus Watches Every Wrestlemania - 1-32 Reviewed!
The first two Manias were all about generating mainstream publicity by loading the shows with celebrities. It's largely forgotten today, but WM3 didn't receive nearly as much media attention as the first two despite doing much bigger business. The Big Event changed the game by proving it was possible to set business records with just basic pro wrestling angles.

It's certainly true that Meltzer's reporting shouldn't simply be taken as gospel. But keep in mind that much of what is attributed to him is either taken out of context or run through a game of telephone until it bears little resemblance to what he actually wrote. Take Hogan's WCW contract, for example. Here's what he wrote in his story about WCW turning the first profit in its history: "As part of a large corporate structure, there are ways of putting expenses on others' books, and it is rumored that perhaps the biggest expense of all, the Hulk Hogan salary, is largely on the Turner Home Entertainment books." That's quite different from definitively stating that to be the case, and I'm not aware of him ever having done so. Here's what he wrote about the plane ride: "There were numerous problems on the flight back from England's Insurrextion PPV, most not even related to Hall. Several believe it is due to Vince not making the trip and wrestlers believing they weren't going to get in trouble because of late, discipline has been not taken seriously because of everything Hall has been allowed to get away with." Dave obviously wasn't on the plane himself, so he can only go off what his sources tell him. Even the best reporter is going to get worked once in a while when covering a business like pro wrestling. My take is that Dave's sources in the company were trying to cover for Vince due to being brainwashed by WWE groupthink. WWE is a place where Vince can never, even for a moment, not be in complete control of every situation, and that kind of mayhem taking place right under his nose would reflect poorly on him. Really, though, whether Vince was on the plane or not is a small part of the story. Professional Meltzer-haters tend to tear apart particulars in an attempt to discredit the bigger picture. But you can see that JR confirmed Dave's reporting of the plane ride was mostly spot-on. Bottom line: trust but verify.

I believe he's said that Bischoff started out as a gimmick but ended up working himself into a shoot at some point. Regardless, take note in JR's interview how someone who isn't working a gimmick and doesn't have an axe to grind mostly corroborates Meltzer's reporting.

It was right around the time he asked Sting to come to the WWF so he could turn heel and put him over.

So who's getting the Diesel push this year? If I had to guess, my pick would be Jaxson Ryker.

The Thread Killer Talks Too Much: The Recaps
Maybe he's like Muhammad Ali and mixed up Gorgeous George and Freddie Blassie. Also, the LA territory was in a death spiral by the late 70s, so I can buy someone born in 1971 having no recollection of pre-WWF wrestling.

WWE TV 01/25 - 01/31 What's the pro wrestling equivalent of Mahomes vs Brady?
Remember when I called Charlotte an unprofessional shithead after she put a concussed Kairi Sane through a table and you all laughed at me? Well, who's laughing now? Not Shayna, obviously. Not if she wants to keep her job. You're pretty much untouchable if you're related to someone who was a star when wrestling was popular. Speaking of which...

Brisco didn't beat Dory for the NWA title. He beat Harley Race. And that wasn't so much an upset as it was the culmination of a years-long quest. Like, I don't know, Peyton finally beating Brady in the playoffs.

Is the empire crumbling before our eyes?
Meltzer said on today's WOR that the NHL is trying to sell to multiple networks to be like every other major league sport and that NBC is likely to be one of them. Also of note, NXT's TV contract expires in October, which is right around when the new NHL season would start if things are somewhat back to normal by then. The whole point of putting NXT on USA was to kneecap AEW, but hockey is a much bigger deal than a silly wrestling war. It might even end up returning to WWE Network. That's probably for the best in the long run since it'll have the stench of a loser brand as long as it's on TV.
-
Is the empire crumbling before our eyes?
This makes USA a stronger network, which is bad news for WWE because it means the network no longer has to rely on them to remain relevant. Plus, now NXT has to worry about being preempted by hockey, particularly during the playoffs.

Very cool interview. I knew that Herd worked for Muchnick at one point, but I had no idea he had ever worked for Vince the Elder. I'm sure he was just trying to get the Roadies over as heels. Nothing he had done up to that point could get the fans to boo them, so drastic measures had to be taken. Dusty had already been reprimanded by TBS for Cornette getting busted open by Paul E.'s mobile phone a couple of weeks previous, and he likely figured something similar would happen this time around. But Turner evidently felt that a simple warning wouldn't cut it given the graphic nature of the spike in the eye.

I have no intention of watching, but I hear Rogan cracked up at the idea that Braun Strowman wasn't on the gas. With all the kooks he has on his show, WWE having a strict drug testing policy was too preposterous for him to take seriously.

WWE TV 01/18 - 01/24 Brazil's president is annoyed that people started getting vaccinated
The Fiend would be fine if he were simply a supernatural Boogie Woogie Man or Godfather who existed in a separate universe from the real wrestling on the card. Not that mid-2000s WWE creative was any great shakes, but I have to imagine that Vince was still lucid enough at that point that anyone who suggested putting Boogeyman in a main event title match would have been fired on the spot.

From what small snippets exist of Stevens' 60s work, he looks like the real deal. I remember reading that he was never the same after blowing out his knee in a battle royal in the late 70s. In any event, he was a big bumper who lived life in the fast lane, neither of which is particularly conducive to extraordinary in-ring longevity.

That's CZW founder John Zandig. He's probably best known for this promo, several quotes from which became running gags in the Botchamania series. It turns out deathmatch wrestling really does kill brain cells.

For my money, it doesn't get much worse than a dominant heel who beats all her opponents clean after burying them verbally, especially when that heel is the smallest and most fragile woman on the roster. It was everything people complain about with Charlotte except ten times worse. Charlotte at least has physical credibility and is capable of having good-to-great matches with good workers. And as terrible as that Asuka/Alexa segment was, Bayley: This Is Your Life was at least as bad.
