Things A Smart Wrestler Should Never Do...
Accepting the heels offer of a handshake. Turning your back on your opponent and walking to the ropes whenever an entrance theme hits mid-match.

[1999-12-30-WWF-Smackdown] Chris Jericho vs Chyna
A double pin always means the match ends in a draw and the champion retains their title. That was until some bright spark in creative had a better idea. Horrible is the word.

[1999-12-30-WWF-Smackdown] Interview: Mick Foley
I really liked this interview. Wrestlers nearly always say I'm the best, blah, blah, blah no matter where they are on the card or what stage of their career they're at. Here Mick Foley is saying he's had a great run but he's on the way out. Whereas the Rock is the future so it's better for the company that he won. Plus he builds the feud with HHH and puts over the Wrestlemania main event in a time before it was such a huge focus.

[1999-12-27-WCW-Nitro] Kevin Nash vs Sid & The Wall (Handicap)
Scott Steiner joins the NWO in one of the least shocking turns of the year. Take a swig. WCW signs off from 1999 by having a vehicle destroyed. Finish that bottle.

[1999-12-27-WWF-Raw] Mark Henry and Harvey Whippleman Double Date
More fun with wrestling's hottest new couple. Mark gets to read out another one of his poems. The ladies get to beat up an abusive fan. Whippleman is reluctant at first, but ends up falling for the charms of the older woman by the end of the evening.

[1999-12-23-WCW-Thunder] NWO and Goldberg again
Goldberg had completely lost his mind here. Punching out the windows of a car with his bare fists. You could see his blood spray onto the bonnet at one point. It wasn't just abrasions either as he sustains a serious arm injury. For one reason or another the stars of WCW were dropping like flies.

[1999-12-23-WCW-Thunder] 3 Count debut
3 Count was a great gimmick. I'm sure the idea would've been inspired by watching Steve Corino on ECW. Their follow up single was way better than the original song though. We like the Backstreet Boys, N-Sync too Britney Spears is kinda cute We watch T-R-L on M-T-V Everybody 3 Count, one, two, three One, two, THREEEEEEEE!

[1999-12-20-WCW-Nitro] Bret Hart vs Goldberg
Bret probably got in trouble for that. For shooting without a mic. Such a good line wasted as well. The NWO is 4 Life and couldn't stay buried for long. The ref actually counted 3 whilst Piper was covering Goldberg rather than Bret. Which gives the Rowdy one a great case for being WCW champion. They missed a trick there.

[1999-12-20-WCW-Nitro] Goldberg, Bret Hart and Roddy Piper
If anyone doesn't think that Russo is the worst booker of all time they are wrong. This whole storyline is some of the most retarded crap ever seen for trying to put over a main event feud. Real fighter Roddy Piper tells the boys in the back to form a union. Not much luck with that.

[1999-12-16-WCW-Thunder] Bret Hart & Goldberg vs Scott Hall & Kevin Nash (House of Pain)
It was easy to create your own House of Pain at the time. Simply turn on WCW. Russo didn't just book the angle here, he booked practically every single move that was done out there.

[1999-12-13-WWF-Raw] Vince McMahon, HHH and Stephanie McMahon
Stephanie now has crimped hair because crimped hair is EVIL! She's already way better as a character and on the mic after the heel turn. Vince has no qualms about an arena full of people chanting "Slut" at his daughter. That tells you a lot about the man. They make a fist of explaining her motivation with the Higher/Greater Power backstory.

[1999-12-12-WWF-Armageddon] HHH vs Vince McMahon
Arena brawling that went on an eternity. The angle at the finish is great though. That evil smile and the embrace. Let's not try to pick holes in the plot. The marriage of Triple H and Steph was a fresh and interesting idea once upon a time.

[1999-12-12-WWF-Armageddon] Miss Kitty's Wardrobe Malfunction
They weren't allowed nudity on TV so they thought they'd try their luck on PPV. The 'match' was like taking a trip into one of The Kings daydreams. After a brief outing of the Kittens, Mae Young starts to disrobe. The average naturist does look more like her than Miss Kitty.

[1999-10-04-WCW-Nitro] Bret Hart vs Chris Benoit
The Owen Hart tribute. Two of Canada's wrestling greats were freed of all constraints and allowed to express themselves artistically. I guess they were out there half an hour total. 23m made TV. The fans were amazingly respectful given this was the ADDitude Era. In this instance a shorter duration would've been beneficial as Bret wasn't match tight. The moves were well executed, the transitions fine. Fundamentally sound wrestling. But it needed a sharper focus to the work to be any more than a top 50 match for '99. The exhibition type feel precluded an intense rivalry. Nonetheless it was one of the Hitman's few highlights in WCW. Given that his career would soon be ended, this proved a fitting tribute to Bret as well as his brother.

[1999-10-11-NJPW-Final Dome] Shinjiro Otani & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs Minoru Tanaka & Koji Kanemoto
An up and down contest that I ended up liking overall. Ohtani was really dicking it up early doors, which is never a bad thing. Tanaka was well suited stylistically to transition from BattlArts to Shin Nihon. He also had chemistry with Kanemoto as a kicker duo. Minoru's unfamiliarity with the opposition was apparent at times however. Takaiwa was repetitive with his lariats. They were going full out for a Junior Classic, yet the pacing didn't feel quite right. A firmer structure would also have helped. Nothing major, just minor kinks. I'm glad to say that they got a level of heat that they deserved.

[1999-10-09-AJPW-October Giant Series] Kenta Kobashi & Jun Akiyama & Kentaro Shiga vs Yoshihiro Takayama & Takao Omori & Masa Fuchi
An accurate representation of a minor TV taping main event from the time period. Far from essential, yet always watchable and had it's moments. Take it or leave it. 25m in total with about 70% aired. The structure was fairly lax and unfocused. Hardly any stretch at all considering the length. Shiga has a terrible body for pro wrestling. Far too thin to absorb the thousands of bumps. I did leave wanting to see The Burning vs No Fear in a tag bout, and will get my wish soon enough.

[1999-09-15-GAEA] Aja Kong vs Meiko Satomura
Probably the most well known match in GAEA history. Amongst the best as well. Aja took the advantage early on and dominated the build. She used her huge edge in size and experience to cut off Meiko at every turn. Satomura appeared too small to have the necessary firepower, but we know that wasn't the reality. She wouldn't stay down and eventually started finding openings. Though she didn't land a high volume of offence, most of what she did hit were high end moves. As well as looking flashy, the kicks and submissions damaged Aja's arm. There were a couple of lovely transitions into jujigatame's. Kong's selling was fantastic. She couldn't hold onto a sleeper so had to switch to using the other arm. An excellent closing stretch where they both unloaded everything. After a hard fought battle the veteran barely came through. Nothing I can really find fault with. Top 10 for the year.

[1999-12-03-ECW-TNN] Steve Corino and Limp Bizkit
I really liked this as a crossover promotional angle. They're playing to the right type of fanbase with Limp Bizkit. It's surprising how well this went over with the live crowd. Fred Durst would even have his own character in one of the WWE Smackdown games and was clearly a fan. Corino was pretty awesome in his role and took some nasty chair shots. I dread to think how many concussions there were in 1999.

[1999-12-02-WWF-Smackdown] Chris Jericho and Mankind
It's no wonder the book sold so many copies with the amount of shilling it got on the shows. For several months all of Mankind's angles have revolved around that damn book.
