The Fink and Mean Gene beforehand. Vince and his stooges. The faux modesty and humility. You could add a hoop to that plaque and play basketball on it. Extraordinary.

Okay so the Corporation seems to have lost half its members and merged with the Ministry to create the Corporate Ministry no less. It's tough to keep up with everything going on in 1999. A stupid idea, but they did have great entrance music shortly after this. Apart from the very start of his career The Rock could always turn into a babyface at the flick of a switch.

I'd forgotten that Stephanie had not one, not two, but three wedding ceremonies in 1999. None of them were run of the mill. She said 'no' during her vows so I don't think this one counted. Paul Bearer conducting the ceremony may have been a problem also. I can just imagine Stephanie suggesting having a storyline wedding on Raw to the two Vince's and this is what they came up with. Amazingly it works really well. The Undertakers theme is awesome, and he could get away with doing pretty much anything with his character. Because he's sacrificing a young lady rather than another wrestler there is more of a sense of peril for the audience. Steph is in her element with soap opera overacting. Austin comes down to the ring because it's morally the right thing to do. The aftermath is the best part of all. It made clear that Austin didn't do it for Vince and maintained his badass persona despite his chivalrous deeds. It also added a new layer to the Vince/Stone Cold dynamic whilst building up the match against the Undertaker. Great segment.

The IC title nosedives to a new low in terms of status. The Godfather was a lower midcarder. Then again they'd have a woman hold the belt before the end of the year.

I was determined to give this a chance. But from the start it was utterly abysmal and I soon had to stop the punishment. I can appreciate 'so bad it's good' but this has none of that appeal. Does any style of wrestling from the 90's hold up worse? Not that it's in any way confined to the 90's or RVD unfortunately. It's just an extreme example of a mindless spotfest with foundations built of jelly. Loss' marathon analogy sums it up pretty well.

In any other year this would be guaranteed to be the most nonsensical match of the year. A first blood match where one guy bleeds for ages and the match continues like it's never happened. Until the pinfall that doesn't count. Except it does. The attempted double turn with no buildup or logic behind it. The fans are instantly supposed to forget the previous 3 years because Hogan has Hulked Up. What? The backstabbing, treacherous son getting his comeuppance is supposed to result in booing? Why? A referee who nobody had probably noticed suddenly becomes a central character. Uh huh, we needed that. Come on Vince Russo. Top this if you can.

This was supposed to turn JR heel? Seriously? He's acting like the announcer version of Stone Cold. He sends Michael Cole packing, who was even more annoying in his early years believe it or not. I remember when Austin stomped a mudhole in him during his 2001 heel turn. That was one of my personal highlights of the year. JR gets off a couple of great in-jokes at the Roosters expense. No matter his gimmick, Terry Taylor was always the Red Rooster to me.
