WWE cut all ties with Hulk Hogan
So basically they're whitewashing Hogan from history. Not that the Hulkster is white, being orange skinned.

[1999-01-04-WWF-Raw] The Rock vs Mankind
Mankind had such amazing music at this time. Alas they changed it just afterwards. It seems churlish to critique a TV match that connected so perfectly with its audience. The heat level for the Austin run in and the finish were thermo nuclear. Such a wonderful feel good moment to see a great personality and character of the wrestling world reach the top of the mountain. It's a shame JR wasn't on commentary. Or rather he was, only using Michael Cole as a mouthpiece. Combined with the atrocity on Nitro this helped the WWF overtake WCW for me at the time.

[1999-01-17-ARSION-1st Anniversary Stardom] Mariko Yoshida vs Mika Akino
Akino was a rookie here. She was 25 however, which is a decade older than your average Joshi starter. Having her challenge for the promotions top title was a surprising move. Yoshida provided entertainment by tying her challenger up in knots. She was excellent at guiding opponents at this new style. A decent match, but ultimately Akino wasn't ready to play the role that she'd been given.

[1999-01-24-WWF-Royal Rumble] Royal Rumble
This completely killed the whole idea of the Royal Rumble for me. If an entrant can wait outside until the end then why doesn't everybody do it? Every year? They should've had Vince as the #30 entrant. Except he comes down to the ring from the start and spends the whole time taunting Austin.

[1999-01-25-WWF-Raw] Owen Hart & Jeff Jarrett vs Ken Shamrock & Big Bossman
Title change #1 of 15 in the books. Neither Owen or JJ looked quite sure how to celebrate after the victory. They were probably wondering something along the lines of: 'What is this tag team's dynamic?' 'How should I be acting towards my tag partner?' Not an ideal situation for your tag team champions. They would go on to have the longest title reign of the year at a whopping 64 days.

[1999-01-23-RINGS] Volk Han vs Hiromitsu Kanehara
Time is catching up with Volk Han here. He's still good, but not the force he was. I didn't buy Kanehara as any kind of threat to him. He didn't have the physicality or the charisma, so it just felt like a workout for the Russian.

[1999-01-21-WCW-Thunder] Interview: Ric Flair
I really liked the bit where Gene mentioned Bischoff and invited Flair to make a joke about him. Ric blew it off because this was a serious promo and he didn't want to dilute the message. I can't believe he actually managed to make Hogan vs Flair in 99 seem exciting.

I really wish you hadn't put this on the YB. I'd forgotten. So classy, they didn't even use a euphemism for penis.

[1999-01-16-ECW-House Party] Sid vs Skull Von Krush
I was under the impression that lots of smarks like Sid in an ironic way. He's the kind of wrestler to draw out the inner mark in fans. The mutant farmboy had an awesome image and radiated charisma. Strong alpha males usually go down well in wrestling. He was ideally suited to squashes, and that was just how he was booked in '99. Von Krush was a suitably jobberish victim.

[1999-01-11-WWF-Raw] The Sacrifice of Dennis Knight
The WCW commentators always liked to mention Scott Norton's 60 inch chest. Well Dennis Knight's looked a good 80 inches here. I actually enjoyed this in a Wrestlecrap kind of way. Vinny Ru had clearly been overindulging on horror movies lately. It was well produced and I always love when they go on about the Undertaker taking souls. Here the former hog farmer is sacrificed and reborn as Mideon. As he was being disrobed my mind couldn't help but drift towards his next gimmick after this... Welcome to 1999 indeed.

[1999-01-11-WCW-Nitro] Chavo Guerrero Jr and Norman Smiley
If you didn't know what was going to happen with that cake then congratulations. Your life will be filled with surprises every day. The fans actually played along rather than booed it out the building. That showed they were doing it right. Goofy fun. Nor-men Smi-lay had a bizarre accent that seemed to be a mix of Carribean, English and American.

Some great comedy lines from Mankind to start. His interactions with Mr McMahon were always fun as well. They had a unique relationship for sure.

[1999-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World in Tokyo Dome] Shinya Hashimoto vs Naoya Ogawa
Watching this out of context, it doesn't make a lot of sense. To be fair it probably didn't make a whole lot of sense in context. Most Dome shows from now on would feature Inoki's crackpot MMA themed ideas.

[1999-01-07-WCW-Thunder] Raven vignettes
New year, same old Raven. This gimmick will get Sandman over. The only mild highlight here was Kanyon reminding me of an article I once read. It was about wrestlers doing totally ridiculous and unnecessary flip bumps at any given opportunity. I've never minded flip bumps all that much. It's the back bump off an eye rake that always gets me.

[1999-01-04-WCW-Nitro] Fingerpoke of Doom
Up until this point of time I would've said that WCW was my favourite wrestling company. Having watched the '98 Yearbook it was clear the WWF were putting out the better product. At the time though I preferred Nitro to Raw as the matches were longer. These days 2m matches and 6m matches have the same value in my eyes, so that's no longer a factor. This was the week when everything changed for me regarding WCW. I was disgusted by the WWF title spoiler earlier in the night. To deride the oppositions world title picture whilst putting this up in direct comparison is mind bogglingly stupid. And the Fingerpoke of Doom was the ultimate FU to all wrestling fans. Such a sickening show. I continued watching WCW until September as it continued its descent, bailing out just before rock bottom. WWF/E became my new #1 promotion for the next 4 years until I discovered something far better.

[1999-01-04-WCW-Nitro] Goldberg arrested
If I didn't know any better I'd think that the objective of this whole storyline was to bury Goldberg. Ending the streak was part one. Now they've got him doing some horrible acting and acting like an asshole in this godawful segment. Nobody ever got over as a badass by whining about defamation of character.

[1999-01-04-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Hulk Hogan
I can remember from the time how disgusted I was about the WWF title spoiler. Nothing else WCW did managed to shed viewers quite this quickly. Amazingly this would not be the low point of the Nitro.
