Have I ever mentioned how much I hate fake injury angles? Especially when they drag on for ages this one. The fellow wrestlers doing a load of bad acting. The announcers trying to put it over as a real life situation is disrespectful to the real injuries that do sometimes occur in the ring. In 1999 one guy would die in a WWF ring and another would be permanently paralysed. This was so serious Cactus and Funk would be back the following hour. It's pathetic.

I've watched all of the G1's from 1991 to 2011. Most of them are available in complete form, and I've seen all available footage. At some stage in future I'll watch the recent editions, but the tournaments are so damned long these days. It took me 4 months to slog through 2011 and I haven't been able to face doing it again yet. The inaugural tournament in 1991 was a classic. If it hadn't been such a huge success there's no way the G1 would've lasted. 92 and 93 were knockout format, which didn't work so well. There are individual matches worth checking out rather than the tournament as a whole. 94 and 95 both had one strong block, and one weaker one. That actually does work out well overall. 96 was a highly regarded year. 97 was so short it felt like a one night tournament. 98 was comfortably the best of the 4 knockout G1's, and one of the best overall. 99 had some decent matches, but no classics and felt repetitive. 2000 had a lot of clipping and was poorly received. 01 was another year with lopsided blocks in terms of match quality. 02 was a fine tournament and 03 was even better. Then 04 was my all time favourite. So many good matches and stylistic variety on each card. 05 was certainly long. Some highlights on the way, but definitely bloated. 06 was lower key than normal, a solid event. 07 had lots of unwelcome sports entertainment BS. Considering the decline of Puroresu in the second half of the 00's I'd say 08 was a good year for the G1. 09 sucked. 10 was too long but wasn't bad. 11 lasted an eternal 91 matches and featured no less than 26 doses of either Wataru Inoue, Strong Man or Hideo Saito. I ranked the first 20 editions a few years ago. It's been a number of years since I've watched some of these so my opinions may well change on a rewatch. Why wouldn't it be, it's the most recent. Next years tournament will surpass this years, and every subsequent year will keep on getting better and better. Why should wrestling be different to every other event?

I love the Mike Tyson's favourite historical WWF superstars part. Vince has to go back to Bruno Sammartino to find someone who wasn't in WCW. Then Mike mentions Nikolai Volkoff, which is awesomely random. A classic segment. The Austin vs Tyson brawl is one of the iconic moments from the era.

One of those matches where the layout, structure and composition should technically be good. They've clearly put some thought into trying to produce a high quality encounter. In reality it just ends up being really boring. It's not like there's ever a dearth of ambition in Puroresu so that doesn't deserve much credit. I don't rate either of these guys as a singles worker. 90's M-Pro was all about the multi-mans.

This was an electric confrontation. The established company star taking exception to a high profile newcomer is a well worn story, so it comes down to the men involved to make it interesting. The two legends certainly managed to do it here. It's a logically booked feud, don't get used to it Bret.

What year was it that internet fans started taking a big interest in US Indy stuff? I know it got big with ROH launching in 2002, but what about the years preceding that? My general reading of the situation was that with 3 major companies running, all the young talent got snapped up quickly in the 90's. Once it went down to 1 then you had a much better talent pool working the indies.

Francine comes out to the ring wearing a thong for no apparent reason. Randomness. If I ever find an RVD match I like I'll be sure to mention it. Many times watching ECW I'll be fooled into thinking the bout has ended because there's been about 6 run in's and it's been 5m since the combatants wrestled. But of course the match must finish afterwards.

Ultimo lost the 8 belts in the J-Crown on 1/4/97, not 1/4/98. The J-Crown was disbanded on 11/5/97. The match against Ohtani was an unsuccessful challenge for the IWGP Jnr title.
