Austin interview, Windham challenges him and faces are out to counter Heyman. No ref which is odd, and they of course hype a rematch at the Omni the next night. Because that's what a national audience cares about. Strong smack by Windham for crowd pop. They go for falls even with no ref. Eventually Rhodes counts a fall for Windham.

Gilbert out talking about his matches since returning and all the fans he's sick of. He then hypes Ricky Morton as his new opponent and how he's similar to Gilbert, which is why he respects him. Morton out supporting the fans, and Gilbert tells him he forgot his roots and they have a hot, quick exchange in the ring before Gilbert runs. Both were pretty good on the mic here.

Lawler & Jarrett follow with a promo hyping the hair stipulation as a huge deal and Lee's most embarrassing moment.

Dogs out with chair and golf club to start. One of the dogs bite Lawler and he's bleeding. We've got Billy Joe Travis passing Lawler & Jarrett weapons. This was fun while it lasted but way too quick. Afterwards Lee demands Eddie Marlin get him a rematch and his money back. Lawler says they'll put titles on the line at MSC next week against Lee's hair. **3/4

Clips of Lawler/Jarrett winning tag titles with Fargo as ref. Dogs attack Fargo afterwards (being pretty careful with him) which leads to more brawling. Lawler says Lee will put up $5K for tv rematch. This was good, but its a shame how quickly this lost steam over the year without much of a big payoff.

Nothing special, though the crowd was hot. The faces seem to be working through a safe routine where each has a very specific, and limited, role to play. The first fall felt like a super team squash. Caras is an awesome heel and each time I see him here has me looking forward to his headline feuds in '93. Loved Caras continually picking up the faces after 2 counts later in the match to continue beating on them. This would've been better with 10+ minutes chopped off. ***

Great matwork in the first fall that looks old school yet feels entirely refreshing, and almost all takes place in the middle of the ring without any use of the ropes. After Dandy works for a camel clutch they roll to the floor to exchange a few slaps and then its right back to the ring and the mat. Just seamless, natural transitions that are a real pleasure to watch while so basic at the same time. Some specific things I loved: - Dandy's submission that's essentially a forced split. - The heat for Casas' low blow in the 2nd fall, no doubt amplified by the fact that it stood out in stark contrast to how clean the rest of the match is. - Dandy's pinning combo in the 2nd fall. - The series of big moves and near falls in the final fall which were built to so well by the matwork and pacing early on. One other note -- Will's listings state that the VQ on this match is poor. While its not exactly HD, it was never a distracting or difficult watch and is yet another reminder that the standards on these sets are higher than just about anything else out there. ****1/2

If the Dump/Chigusa hair match isn't Austin/Hart from the 80s I don't know what is. Just brutal, emotional and an outright fantastic spectacle. I'd heard about all of the crying in the audience during the post-match but it was something else to actually see it.

This is really the crux of it. Most top babyfaces before Cena would've been heels in prior decades. Just part of a cultural change.

This, and most of WCW's in-ring product at this time, was a cut above what was being offered in WWF outside of Flair/Savage. Watching the year unfold (I'm through August), what's standing out to me is the night and day difference in production and professionalism between the two companies. WWF is so far ahead of WCW in lighting, TV sets, interview / promo segments. Its such a disparity that for the casual fan I can easily see why one simply looks like a minor league outfit.

Awesome, definitely curious to see what works. Tanahashi/Suzuki is definitely long, as are some other picks I'd throw out from Japan including Liger/Samurai 4/30/92 and Jumbo/Tenryu '89, but they strike me as easily accessible. Originally I thought you might want to go for things with either great production (modern WWE) or insane crowds Joe/Kobashi, but it sounds like this crowd has more than a cursory background. Funk/Hansen should fit right in and I agree with Sean Mooney that Jumbo/Tenryu vs. Choshu/Yatsu from '86 is a great fit, but that may just be natural biases. There has to be a place for some ECW madness, whether its Tajiri, Raven/Richards vs. Pitbulls 2/3 falls or a match/angle involving Raven & Dreamer. Tough not to at least get engaged by the heat there.

I loved Tanahashi/Suzuki from last October for a modern NJ pmatch. Also great in a different way from much of what's currently on your menu.
