[1992-01-18-USWA-TV] Jeff Jarrett & Robert Fuller vs The Moondogs / Interview: Jeff Jarrett & Jerry Lawler
EDIT: Mixed up my comments here with the one from a week earlier. For a no DQ match, this felt a little more reserved compared to some of the earlier matches on the set. No complaints, but it reminded me of when you'd get stips in an ECW rematch even though there was nothing to suggest the stips mattered the first time around. Richard Lee hooks the leg for the pin. The faces take to the mic afterwards and Jarrett seems to lose his focus. The Moondogs are easily the highlight of the set so far. Might not be the best wrestling but these guys are just wild and a ton of fun and exactly what I want out of brawling heels. ***

[1992-01-10-WWA] Bob Backlund vs Jerry Lawler
This was a pretty big clash of styles. Lawler and Bob were both doing their own thing, to the point where it feels as though they're taking turns with their schtick and it just never clicked. Fun to see the pairing so I get why it made the set, but not exactly something you'd go back and rewatch. **1/4

[1992-01-10-AJPW-New Year's Giant Series] Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi & Toshiaki Kawada vs Jumbo Tsuruta & Masa Fuchi & Yoshinari Ogawa
Decent 6 man with a solid Jumbo/Kawada sequence early, followed by Kikuchi being treated like a rag doll and Kobashi having his own FIP segment thereafter. I didn't think this was anything too special, which by the standards of a '90s AJ six man tag means it was still one of the better matches of the month. Just not anything to write home about given the standards they'd set for themselves time and again. ***3/4

[1992-01-05-UWA] El Hijo del Santo vs Negro Casas
I haven't seen much lucha and my concept of it was generally your stereotypical six man with bodies flying everywhere. This was not that, and it was awesome. The shoddy VQ and lack of audio didn't bring things down at all for me. Great action trading holds on the mat, with Casas bringing awesome facials to the table that even the VQ couldn't hide. Things slowed down in the second fall but it was still exciting to watch, especially being so new to the style. Cannot wait for more. ***3/4

[1992-01-04-WCW-Saturday Night] Arn Anderson vs Dustin Rhodes
This was AWESOME. Easily one of my favorite matches of the month. Great work by both with Anderson selling his knee following a figure four and spinning toe hold, and Dustin selling his arm later on. I had no recollection of matches this hot and excellent being a regular part of WCW's weekly tv at the time, but it became pretty clear that while this may have been one of the better efforts, tv was just awesome during this period. Things wrap with a 6 way brawl the Dangerous Alliance feud continues, and the lack of a finish isn't a sore spot at all. ****

[1992-01-04-USWA-TV] The Moondogs vs Jeff Jarrett & Robert Fuller
This was just awesome and barely a few minutes. The Moondogs manage to bump and effectively sell for the faces while still looking like absolute trashbag monsters, and both bleed pretty quickly as well. This had me stoked for more 'dogs action and the month would not disappoint at all.

[1992-01-04-NJPW-Starrcade 1992 in Tokyo Dome] Riki Choshu vs Tatsumi Fujinami
Fujinami's dropkicks looked great even if the match itself was far from a world title classic. Choshu certainly went over strong at the end with the lariats, though it felt a little lacking in the drama / high stakes department for an IWGP title change. Ichi Ni San Da! Can't forget who counts here. ***

[1992-01-04-NJPW-Starrcade 1992 in Tokyo Dome] Rick & Scott Steiner vs Sting & Great Muta
Fun way to kick off the '92 yearbook. All four worked pretty hard, with Sting putting forth more effort than usual. Some nice double team moves by the Steiners while Muta took a nice beating during the heat segment. I haven't rewatched the Hase/Sasaki match in forever, and while I know that had more high spots and a greater variety of impressive ones, this felt more cohesive. ***1/4

Ken Patera
If footage is that hard to come by, maybe a collection of Patera & a couple others from that era for whom footage is similarly lacking? "The Forgotten Few" or some nonsense like that where availability dictates a broader there.

The JTTS
Okay. I think you're leaving out the fact that they were presenting major league quality national television, and the only brand doing so. The presentation and packaging made their product look head and shoulders above what everyone else was doing and I'd contend that these factors were as equally responsible for any house shows not drawn on the back of Hogan up to a certain point. Its all well and good to want to give credit to the booking and wrestlers, but sometimes the box sells.

Ken Patera
Time for a Patera set. I currently have no interest in the AWA set but would love to check out more Patera. I caught the tail end of his WWF run and have checked out a few other outings online, including the MOTY, but want to see the guts already.

A thread in which Dylan compares various wrestlers to HHH
Loss's yearbook posts are some of the best things on this board. If no Flair avatar, perhaps Daniel Bryan with a thought bubble?
-
The JTTS
Jerry, are you contending that these shows were loaded based on the names & reps of guys in the lineups down the road in their careers? Or is it based on going back and reviewing what was pushed on tv, in magazines, at earlier shows or other large mediums as draws? Not looking to be obstinate but I don't see it otherwise.

Mark Henry
I absolutely rocketed off the couch and was pumping fists when I heard that music come through. The guy is outstanding and has been since the HoP run started a couple years back and brings a heel quality to the table that hasn't been there in forever. As far as guys on the roster I might enjoy more, Bryan still probably does more for me than anybody, and I love Punk's promos. But Henry's character and schtick are probably only second to DB.

Colt Cabana
Dylan touched on this in greater detail, but in listening to Colt on the MLW podcast and trying to listen to his own a couple times, he simply comes across as a dick. He seems to believe he is funnier and better than you, and perhaps if he could channel that into a heel persona that could cut a tv promo and back it up with a look and/or work that fit tv he'd have a place there. But he doesn't. And I don't see what he brings to the table that would add value to any tv segment, much less light the ring on fire.

Jerry Lawler
Man, apparently I missed the boat on this one. Figured I'd sit it out as I had just plowed through the Memphis 80s set but am absolutely regretting it now.

Mother Fucking Regal
I have not seen much of Regal in WWE, but this is something I tend to agree with. He's so good at the mechanics and filling his matches with cool stuff not often seen with other US workers that it tends to hide or overshadow some of his shortcomings in other areas. I just saw the Arn match and while the work was good, the match felt somewhat disjointed. I think Regal was probably better suited for shorter 10-12 TV matches than 20+ minute main events because he seemed to struggle filling time while connecting different parts of a match. I'm not sure why Regal wasn't given more opportunities to go long. He could tell a story and be effective in shorter matches, but don't think he ever let things drag when going long as those little things you touched on were very effective in keeping things more than interesting when going long.
