Super Estrellas de la Lucha Libre – 7/3/83
Show opening credits play showing different scenes of wrestling action while “Joy” plays over the intro.
Rickin Sanchez is sitting at the interview desk and welcomes the viewers to the show. Last night was the long awaited NWA World title match between Harley Race and Carlos Colon. Rickin informs the viewers that while Carlos did win the match, since it was by DQ the title does not change hands. However, there was some activity post-match that has resulted in a match being signed for tonight’s card in Arecibo. We’ll see some of the action from last night’s match and the post-match altercation that resulted in tonight’s main event. Also tonight, Pedro Morales will take on Kendo Nagasaki and the North American tag titles will be defended. Let’s go to the studio for our first match.
Here’s Joaquin Padin with the call.
Match #1: Buddy Landell-Terry Gibbs vs. Chicky Starr-Angelo Rivera
Landell and Gibbs are not in a good mood after losing their individual title matches last night. Still, they remain the Caribbean tag champions and face the team of Rivera and Starr. Angelo and Chicky started off strong, causing Gibbs and Landell to scramble and start arguing with each other. This continued throughout as it seemed Landell and Gibbs were not on the same page. Because of this, Chicky was able to surprise Gibbs with a small package for the upset pin. As the referee raised Chicky and Angelo’s arms, Landell and Gibbs jumped them and attacked them out of anger at losing. After a few moments, Landell and Gibbs angrily grabbed their titles and stormed off as Angelo and Chicky started to gather themselves.
Winner: Chicky Starr and Angelo Rivera
Card rundown for tonight in Arecibo and commercial break.
Back from the break, Rickin mentions that due to the win we saw a few moments ago by Chicky and Angelo, tonight in Arecibo Buddy and Terry will be defending the Caribbean tag titles against them. He brings in his first guest, none other than Hugo Savinovich. Hugo enters accompanied by Barrabas and sits at the desk. Barrabas stands behind Hugo. Rickin welcomes him and says that it was an interesting night last night. Hugo responds by saying that if by interesting he meant successful then he agreed. Last night it became evident that he had been speaking the truth all along, that Carlos Colon would not be the NWA World champion. Colon’s a loser, always has been and always will. Rickin brings up that Carlos won the match, but because of the NWA championship rules, the title could not change hands. Hugo says that it’s just proof of how Carlos Colon could not get the job done. Rickin mentions that Carlos had the match well in hand until Race took the easy way out and threw Carlos over the top rope to earn the DQ. Hugo looks at Rickin and tells him to stop making excuses for Carlos Colon. “I was there and had the best view of what really happened. It’s obvious that Carlos Colon realized how outclassed he was against Harley Race, so he first tried to attack me, an innocent bystander, in order to distract the referee to enact some sort of nefarious tactic since he was so outclassed. Then, when he saw it wouldn’t work, he jumped over the top rope to get away. What a coward.” Rickin mentions that the referee didn’t see it that way. Hugo says that he just calls them as he sees them.
Rickin mentions that we’ll see the video later and the viewers can make their own judgement about what happened. Rickin asks Hugo about the matches Kendo and Los Medicos have tonight, with Hugo guaranteeing victories for his charges.
Card rundowns for the coming week’s house shows and commercial break.
Match#2: Los Medicos vs. Jose Miguel Perez-Victor Jovica
Los Medicos will be challenging King Tonga and El Gran Apollo tonight for the North American tag titles. Here, they face two veterans in Jose Miguel Perez and Victor Jovica. The match is solid back and forth affair, but Los Medicos get the upper hand by switching in and out. Behind the refs back Los Medicos win by isolating Perez and getting the pin.
Winner: Los Medicos
Back at the desk, Rickin remarks that Los Medicos looked impressive in their victory and that they look to have some momentum heading into tonight’s title match. But it won’t be easy since they’ll be facing King Tonga and El Gran Apollo, who join Rickin at the desk. Rickin asks them if they are ready and they both take turns saying that they are. Apollo says that Los Medicos are a tricky team and they would be have to be careful. Tonga adds that they know they have to also watch out for Hugo at ringside, but that Los Medicos are in for a tough night. Rickin wishes them luck and brings in his next guest Pedro Morales.
As Pedro arrives, he greets and shakes hands with Apollo and Tonga, with Tonga whispering something to Pedro and Pedro laughing and responding back. Rickin welcomes Pedro and asks him about the exchange with Tonga. Pedro says when he came back to Puerto Rico a few months ago, he had two goals. One was to be able to wrestle in front of his people, the other was to see if he could lend a hand in guiding some of the up and comers. Right away Apollo and Tonga caught his attention and he’s been training with them in order to help them reach their potential. Rickin says that it’s impressive what they’ve accomplished already and Pedro agrees. Rickin asks him about his match tonight with Kendo and Pedro says that Kendo is a very capable opponent and one who’s not above using different means to get the win. Pedro promises that he’ll come out on top tonight in Arecibo. As Pedro leaves, Rickin says that we will see Pedro in action when we get back from the break.
Card rundown for tonight in Arecibo and commercial break.
Match #3: Pedro Morales vs. Gypsy Rodrigues
Pedro makes quick work of Gypsy, getting the pinfall victory.
Winner: Pedro Morales
Back at the desk Rickin is joined by Angelo Rivera and Chicky Starr. Rickin asks them if they are okay for tonight’s return bout and Chicky says that Gibbs and Landell may have gotten their licks in, but he and Angelo would have the last laugh tonight. Angelo comments that people may think they are underdogs, but they have a lot of heart and will look to repeat their victory.
Next, Rickin brings in Jim Duggan, who has looked impressive so far in his matches. Duggan says that he’s enjoying his time in Puerto Rico, and is looking to move up the ladder and get into title contention. Jay Youngblood is next and makes and comments on how he’s thankful to the fans for the warm reception they have given in and that he‘s looking forward to his upcoming matches.
Rickin says that it is an exciting time with all of these recent newcomers. He then says that there is also another wrestler who will be making his debut this next weekend. A video is shown of match highlights showing a very impressive and tall wrestler. After a minute of highlights, a brief promo is shown where the man says that Puerto Rico better get ready, because they are about to get a taste of what a Tennessee Stud is all about. Ron Fuller will debut this coming week..
Card rundowns for the coming week’s house shows and commercial break.
Back from the break, Rickin is joined by Buddy Landell and Terry Gibbs. Both men seem a bit angry. Rickin asks them how everything’s going and Landell snaps that Rickin should mind his own business. Rickin asks them about their loss against Chicky and Angelo Landell says that it was a fluke, one that won’t be repeated. Rickin mentions that it seems that it looked off, as if they were having trouble communicating. Landell says that it’s nothing; they’re still the Caribbean tag champs and will remain so. Rickin asks to the conspicuously quiet Terry Gibbs and asks him about tonight’s match. Gibbs says that he’s looking to retain his title tonight. Rickin mentions that at least he still has this one considering that he was unsuccessful in his Puerto Rico title match. At this point Gibbs angrily retorts that it would have been different if the plan had gone as he thought it would. Gibbs then snaps at LAndell “And just were where you, you were supposed to be out there to help me” Landell said that he had confidence that his partner could handle it and that if it weren’t for Gibbs last night, he would have regained the North American title. Gibbs can’t believe that Landell is blaming him for that, and starts yelling that at least he didn’t leave his partner out to dry during his title match last night. At this point Rickin thanks them for their time as Landell and Gibbs start arguing and yelling at each other as they leave the desk.
At this moment, Rickin says they are going to show highlights from last night’s NWA World title match. As video of the match plays, Rickin narrates some of the events. Viewers see footage of the ending, including Hugo’s distraction attempt, Carlos knocking him off the apron, Race throwing Carlos over the top rope, the post-match attack involving Dick Slater and Mil Mascaras making the save.
After the clip plays, Rickin is joined at the desk by Harley Race and Dick Slater. Rickin welcomes them and aks them about last night. Race talks about how Colon found out what it takes to be NWA World champion and that Colon does not have it. Rickin asks him if he felt that he may have been unprepared for last night’s match but Race says that as a seven time NWA World champion he is used to having to go anywhere and everywhere and face off against men he’s has not had time to scout. Rickin asks Race about the match’s ending, some people might say that Race might have taken an easy way out. Race says that is not true, he never takes any easy way out he takes on every challenge head on.
Turning to Dick Slater, Rickin asks him why he made his presence known after the match was over. Slater explains that Harley is a friend of his and he’s well aware of what a dirty wrestler Colon can be. He just knew that Colon was about to try something after being embarrassed by Race and that he was there to help his friend before anything nefarious was done by Colon. But Mil Mascaras had to stick his nose where it did not belong and that he will gladly take him out tonight. Race says that tonight he will again show that he is the better man.
As Rickin thanks them for their time, Race says to wait a moment. There was one other man who was there last night making sure that nothing untoward went down and Race wanted to show his appreciation. He asks for Hugo Savinovich to join them. As Hugo arrives, Race says that it is tough to know who to depend on when so many people would stoop to any level to obtain the greatest prize in all of wrestling. As a token of his appreciation, Race presents Hugo with a new pair of cowboy boots. Hugo is overwhelmed and says that he will wear them with pride and honor.
Card rundown for tonight in Arecibo and commercial break.
Match #4: Abdullah the Butcher vs. Isaac Rosario
Abdullah the Butcher dominates Isaac Rosario. During the match, Hugo joins Joaquin Padin on commentary and reminds everyone that no one is safe from “his monster, his machine”.
Winner: Abdullah the Butcher
With that, Joaquin Padin signs off and sends it back to Rickin at the desk, where he is joined by Carlos Colon and Mil Mascaras. Rickin welcomes them and asks Carlos how he was doing. Carlos says that he is disappointed that he couldn’t bring the NWA World title to Puerto Rico. He was sure he had it, but Race managed to find a way to escape. Rickin says that in the almost ten years he has been involved in Capitol Sports Promotions he was never so sure that he’d see Carlos do it than he was last night. Carlos says that he has to move beyond the disappointment and focus on tonight. Carlos says he wants to publicly thank Mil for coming to his aid. Mil says that it was nothing; he knows Carlos would do the same. Mil mentions that he has a score to settle with Slater and that he knew Carlos would definitely want to get his hands on both Slater and Race. Carlos says that he hopes to get a small measure of satisfaction tonight.
Rickin wraps up the show by going over tonight’s card in Arecibo and the Thursday and Friday lineups. Tune in next Saturday for Super Estrellas de la Lucha Libre
