[1996-01-20-USWA-TV] PG-13 vs Tracy Smothers & Jesse James Armstrong
Some of the USWA vs. SMW stuff was good, but this might be the best that Road Dogg has been a part of. JC Ice with the ludicrous purple hat before the match was fantastic, and by not giving up he comes out looking like such a badass. Really good segment that continues multiple feuds, something Memphis is really good at.

[1996-01-18-AAA] Psicosis vs Ultraman
Psicosis is a legit crazy person, so his matches should be judged on their own scale. As far as crazy Psicosis matches go, this one has the bumps but not the opponent to make it good. The crowd barely reacts to the riding the ladder spot, so if the people in the building barely care then why should I? Glad it was on the set, but I wouldn't call this a good match at all.

[1996-01-15-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Sting
Flair/Sting is always worth a watch, and this match is like a reunion tour. Flair hasn't fallen to the point where he is the David Ruffin and needs someone off-stage singing his parts yet, but it seems like WCW thinks he is. Hogan really comes across as such a dick here, and it is no surprise that the fans can't stand him at this point.

[1996-01-15-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Arn Anderson, Kevin Sullivan & Brian Pillman
Such a weird segment, as Pillman gets in trouble for wearing a t-shirt to a meeting with the fucking Taskmaster and the fucking Zodiac! Benoit dressed up like a Burger King shift manager is hilarious too. He got his associate's degree in business administration from the local community college and he is bringing a new level of professionalism to the 11am-7pm shift!!

[1996-01-15-WWF-Raw] Razor Ramon and Goldust
Certainly a departure from the WWF I've seen on the 95 yearbook. I can see why my buds who were actually watching at this time were so into Golddust.

[1996-01-15-WWF-Raw] Billionaire Ted
Despite hating the Braves of the mid-90s, they never bought a World Series -- San Diego gave them McGriff, Maddox was a castoff, and the rest of their stars were home grown. If you are going to diss Turner, at least be accurate about it!

[1996-01-13-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Tommy Rich
The best part of Memphis TV is how they go from one angle to the next in the same show -- crash TV can work if done right. Of course when you have guys who can actually talk it helps!

[1996-01-10-FMW] Hayabusa & Masato Tanaka & Koji Nakagawa vs W*ING Kanemura & Mitsuhiro Matsunaga & Hido (No Rope Barbed Wire Spider Net Double Hell Death)
I don't know about this never forgetting that it is a wrestling match (at one point a dude is being raked across the barbed wire ropes while another guy is getting a piece of broken wood jammed into his forehead as a third guy is taking a release german onto the top of his head), but it is damn fun. The dives were all slick and the biggest spots were all teased really well.

[1996-01-10-FMW] Aja Kong vs Combat Toyoda
Hollinger's comment on how modern day US indy draws from this kind of match is spot on, though most modern day indy guys wish they had the presence of these 2. I was at a Championship Wrestling from Hollywood show where 2 guys who maxed out at around 160lbs tried to pull off this type of match and it was horrible. This works because they both have the physical charisma to make all the "respect" spots seem tough rather than silly or affected.

Alright, this one was a little more mean spirited than the first one, and the steroid policy knock was just stupid.

[1996-01-06-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich & Doug Gilbert vs PG-13 feud recap
Somebody needs to put together a definitive Tommy Rich comp, as everything that guy does is solid gold. Wolfie D is such a great babyface interview too, even though he looks like the kind of dude who hung around the parking lot at my high school, blasting Tupac on the 12s in the hatchback of his Honda Prelude and trying to fuck girls with curled bangs and Addidas jackets.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Public Enemy vs The Gangstas
Pre-match is always great with both of these teams, as they both have awesome music and New Jack's shit is usually good. The knock on Harlem Heat was kind of funny, but the screwed up into saying PE was from south central LA was funnier. Does the sign that says "Kill the B.M.F.s" stand for "black mother fuckers"? In any other venue I wouldn't think so, but the crowd at the ECW Arena aren't the most respectable of folks.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Sabu vs Stevie Richards
Kind of a fun match, but once I saw the guy rocking the Kerry Collins Carolina Panthers jersey I couldn't stop thinking about it. I get wanting a jersey of your favorite team, but outside of a Ray Carruth jersey, I'm not sure he could have made a worse choice.

[1996-01-05-ECW-House Party] Raven, Beulah and Tommy Dreamer
For angsty mid-90s teen drama, this is solid stuff. If I knew that ECW existed and was into wrestling at this point in time, 16 year old me would have loved this shit.

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Nobuhiko Takada vs Keiji Muto
Mutoh walking out after the finish all alone up the ramp was a great visual, as was the staredown with Hash. Maybe not the classic you would have hoped for, but still a good ending sequence in front of a super hot crowd.

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Vader vs Antonio Inoki
This match is definitely on my 'desert island' list, and I've probably watched it 20 times over the years. It is the wrestling equivalent of a late 80s/early 90s action flick, with Inoki as your Riggs-like hero who is simultaneously too old for this shit and will never back down and let this mothfucker beat him. This felt like a fight scene from a Die Hard or something, and is still great every time I watch it.

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Shinya Hashimoto vs Kazuo Yamazaki
Really good asskicking match with Hash looking strong. I'm not really familiar with UWFi, but if the goal of this was to set Hash up to challenge the other UWFi guys then it definitely succeeded.

[1996-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 1996] Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto
Matches with no heat are always a little rough getting through, but I'm also surprised that neither guy tried to pull the crowd in more. Kanemoto is a favorite of mine but this isn't his best showing.

Russo as Turner middle management is pretty funny if only because his New York accent is so apparent. I didn't watch wrestling for a few years up through mid-96, so this is my first time seeing these skits. This first one is more silly than mean, which I had read they were.
