I went from 2000 til just the past few months without showing any real interest in wrestling. I dropped in every now and then, but never to any significant degree. I would still buy books on wrestling and subscribe to the observer for some bio's or whatever, but never watch even half a full show of WWE TV and have never watched a single episode of TNA. I suspect I suffered from burnout and various other factors for falling away. I was one of those guys who would consume everything which came my way, buying tapes of wrestling all around the world and spending more spare time than was probably healthy watching matches. I can still remember the days that hundreds upon hundreds of VHS tapes from any promotion you care to mention went in a skip. I just didnt care any more. I was done. I guess that like music I have reached a point now where I tend to focus on what came before and appreciating that rather than looking for anything new. It was a casual stumbling across this forum and the apparent focus on historical wrestling rather than what is current that actually re-ignited my passion for wrestling, along with finding out what Meltzers raving over current NJPW (my only concession to modern wrestling) was all about. I probably will never get back to being the obsessive I once was, but perhaps some (old) wrestling is better than none at all. -

It'd be fun to take a wrestler, like Darsow, and try to construct a narrative thread that unites all of his weird gimmick changes from promotion to promotion. Barry Darsow starts out as a roided-up Soviet sympathizer whose commie ways fade as he falls in with some strange leather/biker/post-apocalyptic subculture. When this runs his course, he decides to enter the repossession business. Before long, he grows tired of this career and becomes an asshole truck driver. Eventually, he takes up professional golf. Or as I like to call it - The Jack Nicklaus Story

Going from Hogan/Warrior to Sarge always amused me. It was almost like they were saying "steroids? here? No way! Look at our champ!"

The Austin v Eric match was good...the immediate post match was better....the 'Coach' section killed any gravitas what came before had.

Everything about Ted was technical to me. He was a 'scientific' wrestler with the best of them, but even his brawling seemed technical....precise. Ted is one of my favourite all rounders of all time.

Hogan at his peak was ingrained into popular culture. Rock is just a fairly famous person. The passage of time has perhaps lessened the appreciation as to how big a star Hogan was and during a time when there were far fewer things demanding our attention.

Hate is too strong a word. I dont hate Inoki, but I do often find him to have been incredibly frustrating to watch. It's clear that he is beloved in Japan, however, that is nothing compared to how beloved he is in his own mind. Still, his role in the history of Japanese wrestling is so important and at the end of the day, so very positive, he has more of my respect than any disdain.

I hated Doink back in the day. He's was one of those things that would make me think twice before mentioning I was a wrestling fan because I was that embarrassed by it. The passage of years and hindsight are wonderful things, as looking back, it's actually a genius idea. In many ways it is the perfect wrestling heel gimmick.

Biker Taker came about towards the end of his Ministry of Darkness run and then was established properly at Judgment Day 2000 and beyond. I can't recall many great Biker Taker matches but the heel promos were pretty great and he was a tremendous dick to Flair and The Hardys. Ah yeah, the Jeff Hardy/Taker Ladder match on Raw was enjoyable with a great tease of a Hardy victory. I assume he's turned face by Summerslam 02 as he'll be transitioning to the Lesnar program (the HITC match is a good WWE brawl if you're interested). So yeah, he was basically a 7 foot biker who chewed tobacco, threw people into popcorn machines and threw out some great one-liners. Great heel, not so great babyface. He turned back to "Deadman" Taker at Mania XX. Thanks! I have only ever known him as being the dead man, so as you can imagine, it was a complete shock.

Right....so I have never seen any WWE from 2002 and stopped watching pretty much at the end of last century, so I decide to watch Summerslam 2002. Really nice card...but one thing has thrown me completely.....who is this Undertaker? What on earth is going on! I don't understand! Dont like this gimmick at all.

Smith certainly was never a great talker but more than that, I suspect he would be hindered in America on the basis of his accent. Surprised US TV didnt put subtitles up for him!
