  1. This is a really dickish promo even by Lawler standards. I did like the bit about anyone from GWF having to come to Memphis for a match, from a purely hometown hero standpoint. Oh, what happened to the Moondogs?
  2. I think part of why he started yelling had something to do with the crowd. Could barely hear a yelling Eddie Gilbert over the "Lawler" chants. Which would have to drive the guy nuts. Honestly, Jerry Lawler calling himself the King of Wrestling in Memphis is pretty much spot on. There's no denying Lawler had these fans behind him about 3000%.
  3. I thought of Sting right away looking at the guy. Way more steroid-y looking, which is kind of strange after Lawler's burial of the steroid-enhanced wrestlers a year or two back. If you're going to rip off a gimmick, why not be honest about it?
  4. Great promo from Savage to change directions in the feud. Flair's run in WWF has been great in terms of character, but nothing ever seems to go the way it ought to.
  5. I got a vague understanding of that bit too. The skeleton part was just plain strange though.
  6. I thought Parka was great bumping around for the tecnicos while that kind of thing was actually happening. Not only did Perro wander around ringside forever, he also completely sold not one but two low blows from Parka. Perro and Fishman seemed to be the most over guys in the match and I was anticipating a big brawl between them to decide the match, which the build suggested. Instead we got a refereee disagreement and both teams being declared winners? Kind of a mess, but with fun stuff.
  7. I was stoked that JR would get to call this match himself. I thought he did an amazing job and it was another match that he was perfect as commentator for. Did WCW look at Barry as a main event guy at the time? Because he was seriously over with this crowd. Windham busting out the hammerlock bodyslam was awesome. And I don't know how often this happens in televised matches, but Arn actually hit a top rope move in the second fall. I liked how JR showed a lot of respect for Arn as a wrestler even if he was a heel. The finish pissed me off. Great match with a ton of heat built up and you have a run-in? With better booking WCW could really have gained on the WWF at the time.
  8. Paul E. and J.R. are clearly best friends. I thought Medusa was hot as well, but questioned the wardrobe choice until the bikini contest was mentioned. It is shocking to learn that WCW put on a PPV bikini contest before the WWF did. This honestly could have been on WWF TV about 7 years later.
  9. Landell really brought it with this promo, then immediately asked Horner how it was going. Whatever deficiencies may exist in the in-ring product in SMW, the promos are absolute gold. Except most of the babyfaces.
  10. Both of the heels here are absolutely incredible. Ron Wright has been a revalation so far.
  11. Was Cornette cutting a promo or making a campaign speech for his run at being a congressman? Who can tell? Great stuff though and I loved Pritchard's knee drops during the clip.
  12. I would fully agree with perfect for the time and place. And I would add that Lawler's statement that he could be wrestling just about anywhere but chooses to be in Memphis was one of the most perfect parts of it. That crowd (and the Tennessee audience) was going to buy that 100%. And I don't know that he could be wrestling anywhere, but he definitely could be somewhere else making more money.
  13. I loved the promo, he should be taunting Lawler with stuff like that. Does me being North Dakotan make me a hick by Gilbert's logic? One great thing about Gilbert/Lawler as a feud is both have legitimate beefs with the other that shine through. Jerry doesn't like that Eddie wants to be him, which is natural. And Eddie resents not being able to be the man in his hometown. I am with the two above me who say that there will be no clean finish here.
  14. This was one of the best non-Savage, Flair or Jake WWF promos in a long, long time. The mic caught my eye too on the awesome jacket. Looking forward to more Razor.
  15. The first half of 1992 has had a lot of wrestlecrap stuff. Shango is probably helped by Gene doing most of his promo for him. I thought Gene did great with the ooze or whatever it was.
  16. On rewatch I can't say my opinion has changed much. This match is all kinds of ridiculous amazing. While I was watching I was wondering why there isn't more pro wrestling like this. Then I answered myself with the realization that Ishikawa and Ikeda had to be beat to shit after this, especially Ishikawa. Otsuka too. The other three were out a little earlier, but my guess would be everyone took their lumps.
  17. I liked how Kobashi and Taue were the guys who mattered at the finish. Sure Misawa and Jumbo were looking out for their guys, but Taue earned that win. And Kobashi looked great in lasting as long as he did.
  18. On this watching I really appreciated how much Hansen's work on the leg puts Kawada over. A year ago he wouldn't have needed king on Kawada's leg to weaken him. Now Kawada is that much of a threat. Not as memorable as their super-intense brawls, but great in a more traditional sense and very big in putting Kawada over. Without Hansen and Jumbo gradually making these guys look better and better we would not look on this period of AJPW or the 4 Pillars the way we do.
  19. I have been playing around with Fire Pro World for a while and I have hit on the one thing that is missing from every "fighting" wrestling game ever. Transitions. It's always a strike or a grapple. If there is a knockdown you do an elbow drop/whatever or submission that lasts so long and reset. There is no flow to the next move, like say a guy who is in a weardown armbar on the ground gets up (if their defense succeds, lets say) and the attacker still has the armbar. Maybe the next thing that happens is a whip to the ropes, maybe the attacker manages to get it back down to the mat. Or maybe the attacker transitions into something else from the original armbar before the escape. Things like that contribute to a match in a lot of ways and it just doesn't exist in the games people have made about pro wrestling. Part of that is all of these games are made as "fighting games" where you are always trying only to win. Having an entertaining match (or even better, one with a good story) is less than an afterthought.
  20. I will agree with the fun touring match comments. Nothing really big, but good and entertaining. Shawn bumping around for Bret is fun with a couple of too-overdone bumps thrown in. They both end up making the other look great regardless of the outcome, so mission accomplished.
  21. Clearly a match to give a green Tiger Kanemoto some experience against guys who knew their trade. The one dive was HUGE for sure, but I'm not into Kanemoto as TM yet.
  22. I like the old school matwork, but after the finish I am a little puzzled by the need to take that long for fall 1. Did they not know how much time they had? J.R> & Rachtman for the most part work really well together and I wouldn't mind seeing Rachtman back. One good thing about the slow mat wrestling is that it gives JR a chance to really shine on commentary. He is at his absolute best when calling a scientific mat wrestling match. I get why Brad never got past the midcard despite the skillset. I do recall a match where he was playing heel in a costume and showed a ton of personality though. maybe he needed a weird masked gimmick to get him to the next level.
  23. AA with a great, great down-to-earth promo on Sting. Please tell me that match made tape!
  24. I noticed Jesse and Tony have way better chemistry than Jesse and J.R. right away. The tournament being sponsored by Super Nintendo made my day. Dustin is super polished for a guy around a year in. I know he grew up around the business, but he is really really good. Rude helps a lot by being such a giving heel. Great match and it is a shame WCW has been mismanaging storylines as we reach mid-1992. The in-ring product at the top is incredible.
  25. FYI the reason the save took so long was because the bus the other 3 babyfaces were on was running a little late. Nothing match due to no time even though Horner is best in the ring doing his proto-cruiserweight/southern brawler thing. And I think the beatdown may have been longer.
