[1996-09-23-WWF-Raw] 'Double J' Exposed
What was this meant to accomplish? And I say that for the entirety of this Raw. Not only did they do very little of substance that helped their image (the IC match was the only good thing about this), but they muddied the waters in every match with a guest commentator who had nothing to do with it advancing some other storyline.

[1996-09-16-WWF-Raw] Owen Hart vs Marc Mero / Interview: Bret Hart
It makes sense that commentary doesn't care about the match. I remember hearing somebody (a former wrestler) talk about how Hall told them it was a complement that the announcers can out over other stuff during their match. It means they don't need the commentary to explain a lot, their work speaks for itself. I'm not sure I 100% buy that, but at the same time if you are a reliable worker who can be counted on to put on good matches it does make sense they would schedule this stuff while you are out there. And it seems to happen a lot. Fun TV match. I wish the WWE had kept going with Mero as he is a little sloppy, but there are a ton of good matchups with current guys and folks who come in a little bit later. It also brings a different vibe to the show with matches like these. Say what you will about Bischoff, but he got the variety show element right in WCW. You had the cruiserweights, the hard-hitting midcard guys, the occasional martial arts guy that could work (not looking at you, Glacier), the tag team division and the main event stuff. You may not love one or two of those elements, but the stuff you do is well-represented enough to keep you coming back. WWE very often is a one-trick pony.

[1996-09-16-WCW-Nitro] Syxx joins the NWO
Syxx was a really good addition. In theory the Giant was. Until the thought occurs that everybody here is meant to be cannon fodder for Hogan at the end of the day. The Giant as cannon fodder seems silly.

[1996-09-16-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Sting
Turning his back to the hard camera was a great choice by somebody. Another great addition to the early nWo story.

[1996-09-15-WCW-Fall Brawl] Hulk Hogan & Scott Hall & Kevin Nash & NWO Sting vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson & Lex Luger & Sting (War Games)
I actually enjoyed this as what it was. A perfectly fine match with a big angle attached to it. The Arn vs. Hall stuff was a fun brawl. But it wasn't built as that. It was built as a huge end-of-days thing for somebody. Only problem is not everyone worked like that's what it was. The sting stuff was really good and totally deserved on WCW's part. Very easy to tell it wasn't Sting. On the other hand, if the nWo is going to flourish you kind of need something like this. Maybe you have the Horsemen tone down their promos going in though. Which goes to the argument that maybe War Games as a thing we have to do is less than ideal if you aren't going to do it justice or it doesn't play to the workers' strengths.

[1996-09-09-WCW-Nitro] Lex Luger vs Rick Steiner
What a great angle. The thing that makes the nWo a huge threat is not that they could take out all the wCW wrestlers at once, but how manipulative they are. With a limited membership and continuation of the hit-and-run tactics they could have been much, much bigger and gone on for longer.

[1996-09-09-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Lex Luger, Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
The one thing I was thinking here was that Arn is very soon out of the picture for a long, long time. And asking myself one question. WHY?!?!?!? The man was on fire with his promos. I know Bischoff wasn't high on Flair and that's an unfortunate thing. The unfortunate side effect is that Arn is not leading the charge against the NWO with his amazing promos.

[1996-09-02-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Nick Patrick
Patrick is surprisingly good as a promo. I'm normally against referees as heels, but in the case of Nick Patrick and the NWO it works.

[1996-09-06-WWF-Raw Championship Friday] Steve Austin vs Marc Mero
Fun match, but the finish is really bad. Pillman overshadowed the whole thing, so it wouldn't be a surprise if it was meant to be the match < the commentary.

[1996-09-06-WWF-Raw Championship Friday] CNE Experience / Bob Backlund and Iron Sheik
I can actually believe that Sid was enjoying that. Huge positive when that happens. The show itself looked like awful WWF fare at the time. Sheik/Backlund was one of the better Raw segments of late due to the sheer insanity.

[1996-08-18-WWF-Summerslam] Shawn Michaels vs Vader
The match itself was really, really good. The two restarts were really, really stupid. One thing that bothered me from the start, like it does with all these Shawn PPV matches from the time. All the heels "hate" Shawn. But they let him come in the ring, do his male stripper thing and take off his entrance gear for way too long. If Vader really hated Shawn there is no way he gets that kind of time.

[1996-08-18-WWF-Summerslam] The Undertaker vs Mankind (Boiler Room Brawl)
This was really great. It was everything good about ECW without all of the downsides. I don't think it should be done often, but given the 2 participants it makes sense. The wrestlers cheering Mankind and UT on was pretty cool. I really liked Paul Bearer's heel turn, but it didn't seem as impactful to the crowd as it should have been. The druids after were a neat touch.

[1996-08-12-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels vs Owen Hart
I liked this match quite a bit, despite Shawn's sloppiness. The rest of the show was kind of a phoned in Raw trying to get Crush and Farooq over with extended squashes of established guys. Without this match and the other 2 segments that have topics it would have been pretty hard to watch. That being said, there was enough here to warrant more Shawn/Owen matches on PPV. Wasn't there a deal where Shawn famously decided he wouldn't work Owen after the screwjob or something?

[1996-08-12-WWF-Raw] Sunny and Ahmed Johnson
Not an Ahmed fan, but I did feel for the guy. And he was super over going into this. There is the chance that he did have a great career without some of the bad luck.

[1996-08-12-WWF-Raw] Interview: Bret Hart
I really like this as a different way of keeping the fans interested in Bret. It's one of the least pro wrestling interviews ever, but it works so well.

[1996-08-12-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall & Kevin Nash
I'll third (or whatever) Hogan being the highlight here. And I agree with Sleeze. This is too normal WCW for the NWO. If you get a chance to watch the full Nitro, the crowd is awesome and well worth watching the whole show for.

[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Chris Benoit vs Dean Malenko
Very NJ style match with not even a lot of the juniors stuff involved. Probably the wrong crowd for it. Then we go into OT. If you put this in front of a wrestling crowd these guys might have gotten somewhere. Somebody should have called an audible at some point.

[1996-08-10-WCW-Hog Wild] Hulk Hogan vs The Giant
Hogan having the Booty Man beat up is definitely a nice to the NWO angle. It proves that they are willing to take it a step beyond the Horsemen and betray even their own friends. Cool angle.
