Wrestling Culture: Greatest Wrestler Ever Reaction show
I see it as an equality thing. Who am I to say that lucha and joshi, despite not really being that into them, are somehow lesser forms of pro wrestling and that the wrestlers who excel at them are somehow inferior to the people who do well at the styles I like? Even worse I could not include them at all and act like they don't exist. This is just my own criteria, not something I would apply to others. But for me I would have to treat all wrestling as "wrestling" and try to judge somebody like Santo or Breaks or Aja Kong on the same level I was judging their peers within their style. Otherwise I would be putting a very heavy bias towards the wrestling I watched into my list.

I like that you went from two wild brawls into the British dudes who will stiff the fuck out of you then the Bock match. Something for everyone.

Wrestling Culture: Greatest Wrestler Ever Reaction show
I don't think that discussion ever got that far. But that is another of the more Japanese elements of the promotion.

[1991-10-05-WWF-Barcelona, ESP] The Undertaker vs Tito Santana
I liked this more than the Flair match as well. Tito looked really scrappy against the clearly physically dominant Undertaker in front of a hot crowd. Could just be the Tito Santana fan in me talking too. But I also thought they stuck to a pretty good structure, minus the oddity of the Undertaker trying to put Tito in a bodybag. Shine, heat, comeback is there because it works. And this crowd definitely ate it up.

[1991-10-05-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler vs Eric Embry
Really fun few minutes, and a great guitar shot again from BJT. Hell, Embry's celebration was all kinds of awesome too. But I need more out of this after so long.

[1991-10-12-USWA-Memphis TV] Interview: Bill Dundee & Danny Davis
I enjoyed this a ton. I will note that this was included with the 10/5 USWA footage. You don't see a lot of these kinds of endings to feuds and they don't always work. But Davis and Dundee did well with it, like they did with the earlier segments leading up to it.

[1991-10-05-USWA-Memphis TV] Jerry Lawler and Eddie Gilbert announcement
Yeah I don't think anybody thought that Lawler and Gilbert were going to stay polite and well-mannered through that whole thing. The whole unified title spiel is old news at this point and I tend to just ignore it. Line of the segment was lawler asking, "If I put on some tights with flames on them and started calling myself "Hot Stuff would I be copying you?" Great stuff there.

I really hope the payoff involves Eddie ambushing Embry with some kind of weapon.

Crazy Like A Fox - The Definitive Chronicle of Brian Pillman 20 Years Later
You're not wrong. The WCW section was very good and I liked a lot of the info in there. But the book itself really gets rolling at the end and gets hard to put down. Well, up until that last little bit where you're wondering if there's even the faintest hope of a happy ending for somebody.

[1991-10-05-WWF-Superstars] Sgt. Slaughter vignette
I saw the Morales stone and wondered myself. This is all way too fresh to be trying to turn it around. I'm not saying the promos themselves are bad. But the timing of them is just wrong. I agree that it should have been shelved for a few months first.

[1991-10-05-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Ric Flair
Good, quick promo from Flair on Piper. Knowing what we do about Roddy that may or may not be the best of things to say.

They at least keep this short. It's not overly good, but it's also not going to stick around long enough to be a problem.

[1991-10-03-WWF-Battle Royal at the Albert Hall] Ric Flair vs Tito Santana
I get all the downplay of this match. It's the same tired Flair formula match that really doesn't belong on TV. So I chose to look at Santana and what he did with it. I'd say even though he was being phased down, he still had quite a bit left in the tank. He sold when it made sense, and well. He brought the fire on offense and made things look really good too. The flying forearm looked great, partially due to Flair. So while I would not say this was a hugely successful debut for Flair, it was certainly not a disappointment. Unless you were looking for a really spectacular in-ring debut for Flair.

[1991-09-29-WCW-Main Event] Steve Austin vs Big Josh
I thought Tony's commentary was really good here as well. This gimmick really gimps Borne as he has to wrestle most of the match like he..can't? Anyway, good enough but it's not going to set the world on fire. Austin's diving clothesline thingy was pretty good.

[1991-09-28-WCW-Saturday Night] Richard Morton vs Brian Pillman
Ricky Morton as a heel is surprisingly awesome. Brian Pillman as the plucky babyface is in no way surprisingly awesome. He's been great the last two years. They put on a really good match to hype up Havoc and then do the dumbest finish ever to make sure it's not remembered as a great match. I'll agree that the York Foundation really is well done. I would have never guessed Taylor and Morton were near as good as they were at being heels based on the majority of their work. Morton in particular is so good at changing the way he handles himself in the ring. I'm starting to think maybe he should get a serious look as a top 20 or 30 in the U.S. wrestler.

[1991-09-28-WCW-Saturday Night] Interview: Cactus Jack & Abdullah the Butcher
Ross really does a great job in this interview of trying to be as far away as possible from these two psychos and looking both scared and disgusted. Abby gnawing on everything he could get his hands on was pretty incredible. Mick's promo tops both, he really kills it and comes off as completely insane but still intelligent.

[1991-09-28-WCW-Saturday Night] Halloween Havoc commercial
I'd say that given the state of WCW when this aired, they really did well with this ad. They got Elvira to do it and both Simmons and Luger looked good. Judging this solely on the current state of WCW, this was actually one of their successes of the time. If you look at the rest of the world it's probably pretty low end. I tend to think small things that work should be highlighted when a company is as downtrodden as WCW right now.

[1991-09-28-WWF-Superstars] Ric Flair and Roddy Piper
What a great, great segment. Piper playing nice only to get the cheapshot by Flair is absolutely perfect. Vince taking the chairshot from Piper is...I'm still shocked that it happened. It's just so out of place in the best way possible. Then Flair takes advantage of the confusion to put Piper down with the chair and it has ot be pried form his hands before he does more damage. Amazing stuff and I'll agree the lack of announcing really puts this over the top.

The Steamboat/Spivey matches look really good. The true highlight here is the Slaughter/Blackwell pair of matches. Those look wild and incredible. I can see Pillman out of the Varsity Club sooner rather than later.

[1991-09-28-WWF-Superstars] Funeral Parlor: Jake Roberts
Jake is tremendous here. I'm trying to think of anything he's done so far that reaches this level of both awesome and completely dark. The way he's cutting that eerie, aggressive promo while pissing off a cobra that is wrapped around his glove and not getting bitten himself is completely insane.
