If I were making a list of 100 coolest wrestlers he'd make it for sure. Don't think he was ever a good worker though, even before the neck injury.
  2. How can it be a chore for you to watch great matches unless those matches aren't great? There's a lot of Jumbo stuff I love and a lot if that bores me. If the bad stuff stains him so much for you his best stuff can't redeem him don't include him.
  3. You shouldn't rank Jumbo. It's your own list. I'd much rather rank shoot style guy #38 than Randy Savage. It's much better to let the bias cancel itself out than to pretend to be objective about a subjective list.
  4. I do find it strange you can give lucha matches ***** and claim you don't "get" any of the workers involved in those matches. Also don't see why not getting one guy, even if he is one of the most pimped lucha guys, means you should totally write off all lucha guys.

An obvious inclusion. I'm not sure how high I can rank him but him hitting Fujiwara with an actual boxing uppercut is one of my favourite pro wrestling moments.

    Naoya Ogawa http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/25740-shinya-hashimoto-takashi-iizuka-vs-naoya-ogawa-kazunari-murakami-njpw-tokyo-dome-010400/?hl=%2Bnaoya+%2Bogawa http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/27951-shinya-hashimoto-vs-naoya-ogawa-njpw-wrestling-world-in-tokyo-dome-010499/?hl=%2Bnaoya+%2Bogawa http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?/topic/25868-toshiaki-kawada-vs-naoya-ogawa-zero-one-infinity-121403/?hl=%2Bnaoya+%2Bogawa

To be fair, Ogawa was amazing and turning Ogawa into a great worker is another strong argument for why Hashimoto is #1.
  8. I'm not a lucha expert by any means but I've seen a fair amount of Casas and a couple of Santo matches. Currently I like Casas a lot more and find him to be more versatile, but my viewing sample for Santo has been very limited. They are going to be among the best ranked luchadores on the GWE list so this should be interesting.

The Young Bucks are like a bad joke that you beat into the ground so much it becomes irrationally funny.

It's the 10th anniversary of his passing today. I'm not even sure what to add.......he was the greatest.. Him exiting out of the ring when his opponent would dominate him and then destroying everything at ringside is my favourite wrestling trope.
  12. GOTNW replied to Grimmas's topic in Nominees
Absolutely. HE WORKED SHOOT STYLE + his NOAH work has some really good stuff and I enjoyed him as late as 2013.

I LOVE ANJOH!!! and will surely rank him. I'll make a case for him eventually that will include information other than "he worked shoot style and had good knee strikes".
  14. GOTNW replied to Grimmas's topic in Nominees
Ki had obvious influences but he managed to come up with enough of his own moves and mannerisms to come off as an interesting pastiche of them rather than a bland copy. I really like his work and will probably rank him.

I'll take his worked PRIDE stuff into account as well. The Otsuka "fight" in particular was amazing. And his stint in HUSTLE is pretty much the greatest thing ever.

To goodhelmet: I'll consider him just like I will pretty much everyone who worked shoot style. (Has Wellington Wilkins Jr. been nominated yet?) Analyzing strictly his stuff since returning, I think his biggest strenght is his approach towards matches. I think he's had 1-2 conventionally "great" matches since returning (20-30 minutes, big crowd, ME + I thought it was great) and a coue of very good ones that went longer but he's also had a lot of great matches in different settings. He's really good at incorporating faux-shoot stuff in his matches and has great kicks. Considering you have Regal at #10 I think you should consider Funaki because his pro style work has a simar minimalistic approach. He can have the world's best 7 minute match. I'll make a match listing for recommended viewing when I get back home in a few days if you want to/haven't been keeping up with his work.

I love Yamazaki. His apathetic gaze is probably my favourite pro wrestling facial expression AND he kicked people in the head. I watched his match vs. Fujinami from the 1998 G1 the other day-a good match but what really stood out was Yamazaki's amazing sell job. He made it seem like Fujinami was going to break his leg in half. It was unbelievably captivating, to the point I'd feel profound elation from watching him take a Dragon Screw.

Don't think this is the case at all. Ishii may have been booked as an underdog but he never truly worked as one.
  19. ??? He had a LOT of indy fans in his 2003-2005 run who were very high on his work. His matches with the likes of Chris Hero in IWAMS and Samoa Joe in ROH were heavily pimped by lots of folks. Personally I thought he was highly overrated back then (unlike in 2013, when he really WAS that good) but he certainly had his share of supporters. Still voted for Baba, though. His worst matches were somehow less boring than Punk's crappiest stuff, even when he was getting old and decrepit and REALLY immobile. I was talking about 2009-2010, duh.

I somewhat like Hogan but there's definitely 100 wrestlers I like more. His Japan work is a highlight for me. He was much bigger than anyone he worked against and when he was paired with opponents who knew how to take advantage of that (Fujinami, Tenryu) it created a really special environment in which I bought the simplest maneuvers as convincing nearfalls.
  21. GOTNW replied to Grimmas's topic in Nominees
Kazushi Miyamoto once broke his nose in a tag match and Tenryu's instant reaction was shoot kicking it as hard as he could. He's a top ten guy for me for that moment alone.
  22. GOTNW replied to Grimmas's topic in Nominees
He had a special aura and a couple of great matches. He's not a lock for my list by any means but I could justify him as my #97 because of how unconventional he worked and how much I like shoot kicks to the head.
  23. Kojima-Tanahashi was the G1 Final in 2010 and main evented Wrestle Kingdom in 2011.
  24. I'd question the consistency of him having great matches in 2009, 2010 and 2013. Punk was deemed good but I don't remember anyone claiming he was at such an elite level (ringwork-wise) before he got a bigger platform and managed to convince people. He deserves credit for managing to back up what he said but from that time period I only remember his matches vs Rey Mysterio (!!!!) as potentially great. He had some highs in 2013 and it was a very good year for him but overall it was definitely a step down from 2011 and 2012.
  25. GOTNW replied to Grimmas's topic in Nominees
Don't really see the case for Red at all. He was a good worker but Ki has much higher highs and a much deeper body of work. Last I saw of Red he was working as an uninteresting FIP in his(?) indy promotion. Am I missing something?
