What are you watching?
Last night I watched Memphis wrestling from 10-8-1988. It was a great episode! The episode really centered around 2 storylines: the build towards the Tennessee-Texas Shoot Out 8 man tag match at the Mid South Colosseum and the Stud Stable trying to hijack the show. The main things to have watched for were the promos and the build to the next Monday show. The Tennessee and Texas storyline was centered around the Jerry Lawler-Kerry Von Erich feud in which both sides from CWA and USWA got involved in their previous AWA World Title match. We get an awesome promo from Lawler, Jeff Jarrett, Bill Dundee and Eddie Marlin about how not to mess with Tennessee! We get a video promo from WCCW promoter Frank Dusek. The Stud Stable was around for pretty much the entire show in one way or another. We got a funny video of Downtown Bruno being Bill Dundee's servant. Ron Fuller and Jimmy Golden wanted payback on Jeff Jarrett and Brickhouse Brown for beating them and stealing the Tennessee Stud's loaded boot at the last Mid South Colosseum show. They did end up interfering and beating up Jarrett and Brown in their match on the show. they also courted Sid Vicious who came out and squashed Tommy King. Overall this was quite the exciting show and the video also contained the original commercials which also added to the whole presentation. Highly recommended!

[1994-07-16-ECW-Heatwave] Public Enemy vs Dory & Terry Funk (Barbed Wire)
I love a good spectacle and this was that. Not a good match per say but it was very watchable. Another iconic ECW moment with Terry towards the end asking for a chair and the entire crowd threw their chairs into the ring. I did like that they did tease the barbed wire spots at first but PE are not Onita and can't emote at all so the spots that did come didn't have much of an impact. At least the Funks brought some intensity. The visual of Terry totally wrapped up in barbed wire and still going nuts was incredible and only outdone in his barbed wire match against Sabu.

[1993-12-26-ECW-Holiday Hell] Terry Funk vs Sabu
I thought this match was really fun. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of when Sabu is "unleashed" he goes absolutely nuts throwing chairs everywhere. The match did have a good bit of out of control feel to it. I wish the crowd would've been patient instead of screaming for blood. The piledriver that Funk always uses looks weird but I guess that fits his wild man aura. The run ins and the blackout was ill fitted. I believe this is my first time watching this match as I've only seen the ending with Sabu destroying the table were in highlight videos.

Exile on Badstreet #36 (Reign in Blood = The Year That Was 2002 IWA Mid-South Hardcore Wrestling) (Featuring Nick Maniwa)
I really loved this episode! I love this show in general especially the SMW and Continental series but I also love the indie episodes too. I'm thinking of picking up King of the Deathmatch 2002 shows this week from SmartMark Video.

[2000-02-12-Toryumon] CIMA & Judo Suwa & Sumo Fuji vs Genki Horiguchi & Magnum Tokyo & SAITO
These Toryumon matches have been some of my favorites since I started watching these 2000 matches. This one may be my favorite so far. This has a little bit of everything and the match never gets boring. Sumo Fuyuki is my favorite of the bunch and he continues being awesome in this just like CIMA.

[2000-02-27-WWF-No Way Out] HHH vs Cactus Jack (Hell in a Cell)
I remember seeing this PPV when it aired live. I remember being in awe of the sheer violence in a WWF match. I've seen ECW and FMW by this point so seeing fired and more barbed wire was a treat. I did like that they contained the match mostly in the cell and when they did eventually go outside, there was a feeling of anxiety as it looked like they might just kill each other. I miss this time period when the HIAC was something important like War Games.

[2000-02-17-AJPW-Excite Series] Vader vs Toshiaki Kawada
This was a hossier version of a David vs Goliath match IMO. I really liked how Kawada was unsure at first and then exploded in a barrage of offense on Vader as if he really had no choice. I also liked Vaders selling in how he struggled to keep Kawada from locking in the armbar but when he did, the scream Vader let out was very realistic and his scrambling for the ropes. This was a nice breezy match to watch and was quite refreshing.

WAR - Wrestle and Romance/Wrestle Association R
I've looked all over for any threads on this but haven't found anything. I've heard a ton about this promotion and how fun it was to watch the various matchups and feuds. I've been a bit confused on where to start watching as there really isn't much of a guide on the net that I've seen of the best matches/angles/wrestlers. If anyone can guide me in the right direction would be very appreciated!

[2000-02-25-JAPW-Valentine's Day Massacre] Da Hit Squad vs The Big Unit (Rick Silver & Dave Desire) vs Russ & Charlie Haas (Elimination)
This was a good, fun brawl but I agree with Chad in that this was a bit too long. This was my first time watching JAPW but I've always heard about their shows. I'm glad to be watching Da Hit Squad again.

[2000-02-07-WWF-Raw] HHH & X-Pac & Chris Benoit & Perry Saturn & Dean Malenko vs The Rock & Cactus Jack & Rikishi & Too Cool
I remember seeing this match live on TV and what an awesome atmosphere the opening segment created and the main event topped it off. It's been so long since I heard a WWE crowd that molten hot. They were popping for everything that was happening. I absolutely love multi man matches and when you have an incredible crowd and when everything is clicking so well and the action for the most part is very smooth, it's going to be a personal favorite. This match will be one of my very favorite matches of 2000.

[2000-02-27-AJPW-Excite Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Jun Akiyama
Not sure if I had seen this match before but this is a masterpiece of a match. This was definitely the Jun Akiyama show but Misawa was phenomenal in his selling. I think I've seen clips of the exploder on the outside as I've seen that before. The drop toe hold to the railing was incredible. I love the pacing and structure was awesome and didn't have the excess of the Misawa/Kobashi matches and I do love those. There was barely any downtime which is amazing how they were able to keep that level of intensity for nearly 30 minutes. This will be the match to beat in 2000.

What's your thoughts on the state of the wrestling business as a whole in 2017?
I haven't watched SmackDown since the brand split but I've seen a couple episodes of CWF MA which I really enjoyed.

What's your thoughts on the state of the wrestling business as a whole in 2017?
I'm not really one to comment in detail about the current wrestling scene as I haven't been watching carefully but I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. While wrestlers are more athletically gifted than before and there is more wrestling going on now than before, what hurts it in my eyes from being "great" is the lack of being emotionally invested. They could do all kinds of innovative moves and cut a great pace but if there's no reason or good reason why they're fighting, I tend to not enjoy it. The current wrestling that I do love is Lucha Underground. While it does have some of the trappings of modern wrestling but it's the writing, albeit cheesy but that's the nature of the beast, that hooks me. What wrestling is lacking IMO are characters and decent writing/booking. What I'd love to see is something in the vein of LU but more in a Memphis or SMW style.

[2000-01-23-WWF-Royal Rumble] HHH vs Cactus Jack (Street Fight)
I still remember the build to this match like it was yesterday. I loved the transformation angle from Mankind to Cactus Jack and it felt like something really violent would happen during the match and it lived up to expectations. It still holds up as one of the very best WWE matches. The booking was great with Triple H sending Stephanie to the back which really raised the feeling that it was going to be a big match. I believe this was one of the first big matches that Triple H bled in? I might be wrong but it might have been one of the first few times. Even though a lot of brawls happened at this time but the use of barbed wire and thumbtacks were something else and was great hearing the crowd gasp. I really really love this match. Damn near perfect!

[2000-01-04-NJPW-Wrestling World 2000] Shinya Hashimoto & Takashi Iizuka vs Naoya Ogawa & Kazunari Murakami
This was a first time watch for me. This was quite incredible! I love the out of control nature of this match. I'm not too knowledgeable about this feud but from what I've read, it seems really interesting on paper. I love the nuclear crowd heat. I also dig how everything seemed like a struggle and the strikes looked very stiff. Very much a MOTYC.

Your Own Ratings
I have a scale of 10. I use the standard 5* method everyone else uses but also the Netflix style of 5* in how much I enjoyed it. I do add 1/2* to the latter. The reason is that I've given matches 5* before without actually enjoying them and it seemed wrong.
