  1. Never liked the Hansen promos in WCW, always felt over exaggerated when they didn't need to be.
  2. Haha just noticed I quoted a year and a half old post. Oh well, I imagine that question has been answered by now.
  3. I remember he squashes The Z Man at GAB 1990, and I can't remember if that's his debut or not. After that, I don't remember him until the Stan Hansen match at Wrestle War 91.
  4. the confederate flag in the background got a big reaction from me. Totally out there. Maybe this match is a victim of context, one of those ones that would be incredible if it were on wcw tv or something, but "All Japan Triple Crown title defense" raises the expectations a bit more. I'm trying to remember now why Hansen beat Gordy three days later. Gordy was maybe sick or something? I can't remember the details.
  5. Wasn't a ton for me to grab onto here, but I enjoyed the match and am starting to feel a bit more comfortable with the style. I liked the handheld for this too. I'm not always a fan of it but for whatever reason it worked for me.
  6. Two of my favorite talking points about Hansen are his cardiovascular training and the fact that he'd sell for a guy, but only if he earned it. Both come into play here, as Hansen is just moving the whole match by staying right up on Dr. Death. And to the second point, he spends a lot of the time selling for Doc because Doc delivered a heavy beating that was believable. Not sure where this ranks with the other Hansen matches in1990, but it might by my top match.
  7. Toni cuts an awesome promo and I'm excited the ladies are fully involved now. This is where it really heats up. Anyway, Toni is totally fired up and raging, and the brawl between the two is vicious. Always interesting to see these early Austin promos, sometimes he really sounds like Stone Cold and sometimes I can't hear it at all. Couldn't really hear it here, but not in a bad way.
  8. The ladies from Night Moves looked bummed. Lawler is so fascinating here, and his tweener role combined with the content of the feud is really something unique. It seems like there's a lot of analysis that cane be done here. Lots to extrapolate.
  9. Craig Johnson is the guy that replaced Marc Lowrence, correct? What a shabby replacement, and he totally dwarfs Bill Dundee. Doesn't even have the courtesy of a Tom Byron wide stance.
  10. Slightly jarring watching this right after the Snowman match. Stoked to hear John Tatum put out a bounty on Dundee's head and Lawler is bringing in the INHUMAN to handle to job. I love a good bounty in pro wrestling. Also, I can't defend it and it's unprofessional and counterintuitive but I love it when Lawler buries opponents. It's always hilarious.
  11. Sid just being in a tux and not saying anything during the promo was super funny. I thought this was really interesting actually to see if/how the Road Warriors would bump and sell for Arn and Barry. I thought Animal sold pretty well here. Better than I expected. I always love faces coming out and making the save during a heel beat down so I can't knock this too much.
  12. I really liked this match, and I'll just add that this is my favorite joshi match so far, and I really liked the very distinct heel vs face dynamics here.
  13. Just to echo, this is the realest pro wrestling match I've ever seen. This plays really well off the studio brawl they had earlier, which also looked incredibly real. Lawler's takedowns are the highlight for me, just really fast and hard looking. And the wild, off-balance punches lend to the realism. This is incredible. Blows away my previous favorite Memphis match, the Jerry Lawler vs Jimmy Valiant match with the ether rag.

Hey not sure if I'm doing something wrong or what but the link just takes me back to the page. I've been looking for the full version of this. Is it around?
  15. Okay, I was wondering if I had missed the heel turn or what. Here's another instance for me where the match is overshadowed by the story. This seems to be the story with Memphis/USWA stuff so far. I like the angles and atmosphere and chaos but the matches seem more of a means to get the angles over, rather than the other way around. I'm not quite sure where I stand on that right now, because I've really enjoyed most of the stuff so far, it's just different than what I'm used to. I guess the fact that we aren't seeing the big shoes from the MSC play into that as well. Hahah Percy just said "Damn you horse face!" to Kerry.
  16. Honestly, I watched this after the El Dandy match and couldn't even pay attention. I'll need to watch this again so I can be more objective.
  17. John Tatum looked like Buffalo Bill when he was running with Tessa. Like hatred and fear and confusion and darkness all inside him. And during the tug of war for Tessa he was pulling on her pretty hard and man it felt mean spirited. Dundee, Lawler, and Jarrett were totally meaningless for me here, Tatum stole the show.
  18. This is exactly the lucha match I've been hoping for. I've always liked the matwork in lucha but so far this year I've gotten lost with the pace and highspots and all the people and falls in the matches. Some of the sequences reminded me of long takes in a movie, where they just go perfectly into hold after hold. There's a spot where Dandy is going for I guess a figure four or something and Angel Azteca keeps trying to kick him, and Dandy just keeps forcing the leg away. Very cool touch. The few highspots at the end were perfectly timed and felt so huge. What an awesome match.
  19. theres a strange tone to this whole piece. A piece about the loneliness and struggles of a professional wrestler, combined with some staged shots of Lawler in bed watching a static television and jumping off the ropes.
  20. Really liked the finish. I was a little disappointed by the match but I'm not sure why. It was fast paced and hard hitting, evenly matched, so I don't know, it worked for the kind of match it was, I was just expecting more. Maybe my fault more than theirs.
  21. Oh okay, that's right, Ole has taken over, so this is when WCW goes downhill. I think I remember Thunderbolt Patterson coming in at one point too?
  22. I forgot what the surprise was, and I was hoping it actually involved Rocky King feuding with the Horsemen.
