At the end of the day you're right, they're raising money for a worthy cause, but Stephanie even said herself that "philanthropy is the future of marketing." That combined with what Justin Roberts said about them kind of creating their own narrative to show the audience, in my opinion, turns it into a marketing tool. Again, like you said, a family got support they otherwise wouldn't have gotten and now more people will too, so the ends justify the means I'd say, but that doesn't make the means any less scummy to me. -

Two recent ones, Suzuki making fun of Misawa's death in Hiroshima last year, and I THINK Saito was in the audience (not positive though). The Connor's Cure thing WWE does feels really exploitative. I guess they are raising money for cancer research but it's very self-agrandizing and having that poor father speak at the HoF didn't seem right.

Without getting into any conversation about cover ups or Puerto Rican justice, this wouldn't qualify since this was not something that happened in order to draw money or get anyone over. Now, you could say that attempts to use this tragic event in angles later on (Onita's attempt being one that comes to mind) would qualify.Was the match where Manny Fernandez makes one of the Invaders throw up fake blood somehow tied into Brody's death or am I getting that mixed up with something else?

I'm not arguing that they needed to work that match to differentiate themselves, I'm arguing they decided to work that match differently. There is a difference. We all know they could have wrestled a traditional match, the fact that they decided that is not what they wanted to do is what made it work for me. The fun of the match is that we know they can do it the traditional way but decided to say, "I bet I'm tougher than you." They no sold the moves, not because they didn't hurt, they didn't sell them because they didn't want to show their opponent how much they hurt. They kicked out at 1, because they didn't want their opponent to feel like they had the upper hand. It was a decision to work a match that was a change of pace, that also fit perfectly with their characters. Their match could have been just as hard hitting and sold everything like it was killing them, but that isn't the story they wanted to tell. This is a good point. I think intent is what makes all the difference. The fact that Ishii and Shibata are good workers that know how how to sell and made a deliberate decision not to in order to tell a story is what makes it work for me and makes it artistic. Jackson Pollack, for instance, was a very good painter and could paint photorealistic portraits, but made an artistic decision to subvert that and splatter paint on canvas. If the two guys didn't know what they were doing and just hit each other, it really changes the match for me, and that becomes a different story they're trying to tell.

Lemmy is given the Connor's Cure/Wounded Warrior award at the HoF, HHH accepts on his behalf, and assumes the gimmick. He starts carrying Rickenbacker basses to the ring instead of a sledgehammer. Stephanie becomes Wendy O'Williams.

I'm not big on liking things for novelty value, but Warrior is one of those things. It's so funny that she blown up before the match starts. Mr Perfect criss-crossing the ropes with Warrior was also funny, and very dangerous. I did like the role reversal where usually it's a monster heel who's undefeated and finally loses to a smaller babyface.

I've said before that I've seen very little of this period of WWF, so I really have no context for mid card WWF matches. So with that in mind, I was thoroughly entertained by this match. Bret not working to steal the show is interesting and kind of brings up a talking point about how much it matters when great wrestlers are lazy in "unimportant" matches. People bring up guys like Tanahashi and Nakamura dogging it in multiman tags and whether or not that hurts their reputations. Anyway, any WWF match that isn't a squash by a beefcake babyface is a highlight for me, so what do I know?

Everyone works really hard here, this is cool. This looks like a pretty sizable crowd for 1990 AWA. I love a veteran in the ring with younger guys and being able to see them run things. Even something small like him directing Enos to stay out when it first becomes 2 on 1, a lot of authority.

Okay, I think I'm very slowly starting to get it. I liked the top rope arm drag and I liked what I think was the third fall. I could tell the third fall was more heated and emotional.

I simultaneously watching this and looking over a graduate school application (awful) so I looked up, saw Piper looking at Gene (whiteface) and didn't think anything of it, looked down, looked up again, and oops, half blackface. At first I thought it was warpaint, but nope, it's a racial thing. I believe he says he's got "a little Chinee" in him as well. Man...

Kerry sounds like a less articulate Mongo McMichael. Him vacantly starring and flexing his pecs is soul crushing. Disappointing promo from Billy Joe, who seems a bit uncomfortable maybe? Terrance looks like the long-haired bookie character from The Festivus episode of Seinfeld. The one that comes to Costanzas hose for dinner, who has a crush on Elaine. There is also a lecherous looking fellow in a black cowboy hat with a silver band around it. Who is that? He looks to be security of some kind.
