Johnny V: "That's right baby, and THIS COMING SATURDAY in Dothan, Alabama…Where the hell is DOTHAN ALABAMA?….Anyway, once we find that place…these two men 'Hollywood' John Tatum and 'Mr. Electricity' Steve Regal are going to run through every team in that tournament and bring home the gold…and make it PLATINUM!" Joe: "I've seen the brackets, if you and Brad both win your first round matches you two will face EACH OTHER in the 2nd round!" Bob: "Well, if that happens I will gladly step aside and allow Brad to move forward in the tournament." Brad: "No way Pop, if anyone is stepping aside it will be me. Out of respect for you, I would allow you the opportunity to move on in the tournament." (Suddenly Ole Anderson steps into the frame) Ole: "This argument is moot…your old man is facing ME in the first round, so there's no chance whatsoever that you two would face each other….but I must say, I'm impressed that you realize the old guy is washed up and you would have to step aside to let him advance." Bob: (shoves Ole) "Who are you calling washed up? I'll whip you in the first round and if this whipper snapper wants to test me, I'll show him I can still whip him just like I did when he was a kid, because he's still a kid!" Brad: (Steps between Bob and Ole) "Now wait a damn minute Pop! (Ole walks away smiling) I don't think you are washed up, I was stepping aside out of respect, BUT if we need to have this match for you to show ME some respect…..them maybe that's exactly what needs to happen, and we'll just see who the KID is.." CWA Championship Wrestling: Sept/Oct 1984
CWA Championship Wrestling WMC TV-5 Studios Memphis, TN. Saturday September 15, 1984 Airing Live 11am cst-12:30pm cst on WMC TV-5 and on tape throughout the territory on various stations (show opens with footage from last Monday night in Memphis , the closing moments of Idol vs. Bob Armstrong for the Southern Title…..Bullet had Idol in the sleeperhold, and just as Idol's arm was about to go down for the third time, Buddy Landell hit the ring and attacked Armstrong for the DQ which prompted Brad Armstrong to hit the ring to make the save, we then go to the opening montage then over to Lance and Dave at the desk) Lance: "Hello everybody and welcome to another BIG day of Championship Wrestling! We have a lot in store for you including the first appearance of the 'King' Jerry Lawler since that controversial title loss on Labor Day to the Iron Sheik." Dave: "Controversial to say the least, but first Jerry Jarrett has something he would like to address." (Jerry comes out to Lance who meets him in front of the desk) Jerry: "Good morning guys, I wanted to come out and address something here at the top of the show…..today's show will mark the first time in several weeks that many fans have been able to see our show. When we left the NWA and became part of the USWA, I did not consider that the NWA would reach out to the television stations that air our program and replace it with other NWA programming. So since the end of July, the only fans who have been able to the CWA television show are the ones here in Memphis seeing us live TV-5. The good news is that our attorneys have straightened this out and we are back on in all the areas we were on before and all those great fans are able to see us once again as of today." Lance: "Well that's great news that we're back on in all those areas." Jerry: "It is, however some fans will have some catching up to do…..a lot has gone on in that time frame and we will do our best to bring the fans up to speed and show some of the highlights they may have missed since we've been off the air in their area. For instance, let's take a look at what happened back at Parade of Champions 2 here in Memphis to the USWA World Champion, Jerry Lawler." (VTR: Footage Courtesy of the USWA) The main event pits good vs evil. “The King” Jerry Lawler is so popular here in Memphis that he could be the Mayor while The Sheik and Skandar Akbar are so hated that there has been extra security hired tonight to ensure the safety of these Un-American heathens. The Sheik and Akbar do nothing to calm the crowd as the head to the ring waving a giant Iranian flag. The Sheik takes the microphone from the ring announcer and yells and screams about how he spits on the American way of life. Then we hear his customary Tehran, Iran chant over and over again. Now it is time for the King to come out as he is introduced by the ring announcer. The crowd is on their feet but something just does not seem right. There is no King? The crowd just sits and waits. Finally, the King comes stumbling out. He can barely walk and each step looks more painful than the last. Ref Pee Wee Anderson comes to his aid and asks what is wrong. Pee Wee then goes to ring announcer Marc Lowrance and explains. “Marc Lowrance: Ladies and Gentlemen. I regret to inform you that Jerry Lawler has been injured tonight during a locker room attack and will not be able to wrestle. The crowd is incensed. Not that we have no match but because someone would attack Lawler in the locker room. Right away they all blame Skandar Akbar! Lawler asks for the microphone. Jerry Lawler: I didn’t say I wasn’t going to wrestle. I said that these two towel heads over here are such scum that they Pearl Harbored me in the locker room. They are not going to get away with that! This is America. This is Memphis. We work hard every day. Pain is a way of life. Skandar Akbar grabs the microphone and denies that he and the Iron Sheik are responsible for the attack and that he is used to Americans making excuses and being racist against his people. He goes on to wonder what the Constitution stands for. Nobody in the Mid-South Coliseum is buying any of this and know they attacked Lawler. As for the match, Lawler really can’t move and the beginning is all Sheik. The crowd is worried that Lawler will be permanently hurt here. Finally, Lawler is able to get things going. He is throwing right hand after right hand. The momentum is his and the match is his. He climbs to the top rope. Measures his fist with Sheiks head. Here we go, Top Rope Fist Drop for the victory! Oh no, Akbar is up on the apron and shoves Lawler to the floor right on his back. Lawler is in agony as the Sheik follows him to the floor. The crowd pops again as the American Dream, Dusty Rhodes, comes running out and WHAM! He clocks Akbar so hard that the Saudi headdress comes flying off. Akbar somehow gets up and scurries to the locker room. The Dream stays to encourage Lawler to fight these foreigner. Once in the ring, Lawler lays face down on the mat. Jim Ross fears that his back may be broken. The Iron Sheik sits across Lawler’s back. Hooks his arms over his knees and leans back into the Camel Clutch. Lawler is writhing in pain as Dusty is basically pulling his hair out unsure what to do. One minute passes and Lawler refuses to give up. Same after two minutes. After 5 minutes in the Camel Clutch with an already injured back, Lawler is almost unconscious from the pain. Dusty has found a towel and is struggling with the decision. If he throws in the towel, this evil Iranian will be the next USWA World Champion. If he doesn’t, Jerry Lawler may never wrestle again. Rhodes begins to ask the fans and they tell him to throw in the towel. They can’t bear to watch Lawler in agony. Rhodes throws in the towel and hits the ring and goes right after the Sheik who high tails it out of the ring. He may be the new champion but he will not celebrate in front of these fans. He is being pelted with debris all the way to the locker room as Dusty is frantically calling for the medics. These fans are not used to seeing their King lose in Memphis and not by cheating. Thank God there is extra security here tonight or else this could have turned into a real riot. MATCH TIME: 14.02. WINNER: THE IRON SHEIK (NEW USWA WORLD CHAMPION) (END VTR) ======================================================================= Jerry: "We'll be showing more footage today and in the coming weeks to bring everyone up to speed on the happenings here in the CWA while the show wasn't available in all areas. I also wanna mention as you said that 'The King' is here and he's still a bit worse for wear from that attack but he's got his sights set on regaining that title." Lance: "He certainly does, but right now let's go to the ring for our opening bout." ========================================================== MATCH #1- U.S. Jr. Champion "Exotic" Adrian Street w/Ms. Linda defeated Shane Douglas with a half Boston Crab Street joins Dave Brown at the desk and tells him that "Lil Tim Horner" will be put in the corner on Monday and he will still be your US Jr Champion. ========================================================== COMMERCIAL ========================================================== As we return from commercial Jerry 'the King' Lawler limps out and sets his crown on the desk. Lance asks how he's feeling, Lawler says he's not gonna lie….he's in rough shape but he's took much worse beatings from much better wrestlers than Iron Sheik and Akbar. He says he's not upset with Dusty Rhodes as he truly believes Rhodes' heart was in the right place….at this point, the Dream Team and Johnny Valiant come out. Idol says that Lawler is a disgrace losing the World title to a "terrorist" like the Iron Sheik. He should hang his head in shame and leave Memphis….Landell chimes the only thing more disgusting was the fact he wasn't even man enough to give up on his own…that "fat slob Dusty Rhodes" had to do it for him. Lawler tells them the only two disgraces in Memphis right now are the so-called Dream Team and that injured or not he would fight them both right now…….Idol/Landell/Valiant all start to circle Lawler when suddenly OLE ANDERSON comes out with a bat and backs off the Dream Team to the surprise of everyone involved. Ole: "Lawler is right! The only two disgraces here are you two bleach blond clowns….This man was attacked and injured before the match and he STILL came down to the ring like a champion to defend his title which is more than a wannabe champion like you would have down Austin Idol….so if you two wanna jump on him….you are gonna have to jump on BOTH of us….so let's go!" With that Ole throws down the bat and heads to the ring….Lawler bandaged ribs and all follows him and Ole helps him into the ring…..Johnny V grabs the mic and says if you want it…..you got it, get 'em boys!......Idol and Rich slowly head towards the ring and just as they start to come through the ropes….Ole blasts LAWLER! Ole viciously goes to work on Lawler's injured ribs and the Dream Team joins in….it's at triple team until The Armstrongs….Bill Dundee, and others hit the ring……The Dream Team and Ole Anderson take a powder…..Ole grabs Lawler's crown off the table as he heads out the back door. Lance: "I can't believe what we just witnessed, Ole Anderson doesn't even wrestle here….how in the sam hill did he get the building??" Let's take a look at the action from last week as the Southern Tag Team Champions The Hollywood Hardbodies took on The Rock & Roll Express." VTR- (Footage is shown of the closing moments from last Monday night as the Southern Tag Team Champions the Hollywood Hardbodies (Rip Rogers/Lance Brisco) fought to a double countout with the Rock & Roll Express in a wild brawl) ================================================================= Match #2- The Rock & Roll Express (Ricky Morton/Robert Gibson) beat Carl Fergie/Dennis Upton when Morton pinned Upton after a double dropkick Morton tells Lance that this week it's no countout/no DQ and they will walk out with those Southern Tag Team titles ================================================================== COMMERCIAL ================================================================== Match #3- Brad Armstrong pinned Ken Raper after a Russian Leg sweep Jerry Jarrett tells Dave Brown that Ole Anderson has been removed from the premises and will not be allowed back. He said he would fine and suspend for this attack but he doesn't even work here and has no idea how even got in the studio today. Brad and Bullet Bob interupt. Bullet Bob says that Ole Anderson is, was, and always has been one of the lowest of the lowlifes in wrestling and he's not shocked at all by his actions and that both he and Brad wish the King a speedy recovery. He says this Monday night he has Austin Idol in a steel cage for the Southern title and this time Buddy Landell will not be there save him! Brad chimes in that Buddy will be in no shape to try to climb a cage when he gets done with him! ================================================================= Lance and Dave go over the card for Monday night CWA Championship Wrestling Mid-South Coliseum Memphis, TN. Monday Sept 19th, 1984 Bell time- 7:30pm "Wildcat" Wendell Cooley Vs. Carl Fergie Jimmy Valiant/Bugsy McGraw/Bill Dundee Vs. My opinion on "special attraction" types is if they were physically able in the time period, then use them because whose to say they wouldn't have worked more "IRL" had a promotion given the opportunity.
