It's hard to overstate Yvon Robert's status in the province, he was a huge territorial star who even out-earned Maurice Richard at his peak for goodness' sake, and the latter would make wrestling appearances as a guest referee. Which says more about how hockey players were exploited by club owners than anything else. For those who might not know much about hockey, Maurice "Rocket" Richard is the most beloved Montreal Canadien of all-time (apologies to Jean Beliveau), which makes him something like the Babe Ruth of hockey. I will fully read all the publicly available documents but I"ll just say there's some confusion in this thread about who is morally or legally culpable of XYZ, above and beyond whether criminal charges are filed. There are many many unknown facts and a criminal prosecution has a much higher burden of proof than a civil suit. One thing is assuredly clear to me, however. It's that many more victims may well come forward.

Putting my lawyer hat on for a moment: this is a civil lawsuit. There is no criminal indictment. This may happen in the future, but for now he's not facing jail time, he's in jeopardy of being on the hook for damages in a civil lawsuit in the tens of millions of dollars.

A tangential point - I too stopped watching current WWE back in 2019 - but this is a good business deal for Netflix and for WWE. Someone whose opinion I valued opined and I'm paraphrasing here: This is a smart deal and super cheap. 520 episodes for $5b is $9m per episode, or 1/16th of what it cost Netflix to make Rebel Moon, which fell out of the top 5 in its third week on the platform. Also great for WWE, which was bought for $21b and just repaid back 25% of that. I find at first blush that this is an accurate evaluation. WWE still has plenty of inventory to flog and Netflix may well expand its sports programming if this deal works for them.

This is just one example of several logical fallacies by the OP. Fun thread but the premise and the claims made from it just haven't been persuasively argued, much less supported by credible evidence.

I'd suggest your proposition needs some evidence adduced in order for anyone to judge the merit of these two claims. Especially as you have to establish some sort of nexus of causation for NWE wrestling of 60-70s-> NA wrestling popularity of 80s onward. Received wisdom is the death of the territories paved the way for WWE's explosive growth in the mid 80s.

I've been collecting and reading the Fantagraphics deluxe reprints of Prince Valiant (the first seven volumes so far) and Hal Foster continues to impress. His influence on American comics cannot be overstated. His artwork is really really good and his writing isn't that far behind. Well worth seeking out.

On a couple of occasions that I recall Backlund delivers an atomic drop so impressive it could be a finisher and the crowd pops for it. Backlund was ridiculously strong. I'd tend to agree Backlund tends to wrestle to the level of his opponent. Fortunately as champion he had a lot of talented workers to match up with and thus his extensive list of very good to great matches in this period. Good thread.

Rucka's Queen and Country deservedly won Eisner awards in 2002 and 2003. Rucka was really firing on all cylinders around this time. Maybe I should go back and re-read Gotham Central.
