MID-ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING #1
WTBS STUDIOS, ATLANTA, GA
JANUARY 4TH, 1985
(After the opening credits featuring the re-branding from ACCW to MACW, we join Bob Caudle and David Crockett behind their broadcast booth, in front of a brand new set.)
Bob Caudle: Hello, wrestling fans and welcome to this premiere episode of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, I’m Bob Caudle along with David Crockett and we’re starting a brand new chapter with Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling as David’s brother, Jim Crockett Jr, purchased Atlantic Coast Championship Wrestling from Eddie Graham in Florida and re-branded it as Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling. We’re extremely happy that you could join us for this new beginning and we’re also excited to announce that we’ll have a 2nd TV show weekly called Worldwide Wrestling. This will air every Sunday night at 6:05 PM right here on WTBS.
David Crockett: And both Bob and I will also be on-hand to host this show and we can’t wait to show you more action from MACW with Worldwide Wrestling. We’ll starting off with a bang, that’s for sure.
Bob Caudle: Yes, indeed, and we’re also starting in controversial fashion as we were scheduled to have Mike Graham for an interview following his huge victory over “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly at New Year’s Eve Bash but we understand that he was jumped by Kelly in the parking lot of the studios right before we went on the air. We’ll try to update you on his condition before the end of the show but we will hopefully hear from Kelly himself as well. And we got quite the main event as “Gorgeous” Gino Hernandez, fresh from a shocking victory over Randy Savage on New Year’s Eve, will square off against “Cowboy” Bob Orton! In the meantime, let’s get ready for her first match of the show!
Match #1
Boomer Lynch beat Robert Fuller with a diving crossbody
Match #2
The Masked Superstar beat Scott Casey with a middle rope powerslam after countering an attempted aerial attack from Casey in the corner.
Match #3
Mad Dog Lefebvre & Richard Charland (w/King Tonga) beat The House of Humperdink (Purple Haze & The Great Kabuki) when Lefebvre stole Humperdink’s cane to hit Haze with it to score the pinfall
Match #4
Brett Wayne Sawyer beat Duke Myers with a hip toss.
After the match, The Minnesota Wrecking Crew swarm the ring and stare at both Sawyer and Myers. After faking an attack on Myers, Ole & Arn Anderson jump on Brett Wayne Sawyer! Sawyer is manhandled by Arn, delivering a gourdbuster to Sawyer before holding him back up, allowing Ole to climb on the top rope and deliver a knee behind the neck of Sawyer! Once the damage is done, The Minnesota Wrecking Crew leave the ring, booed by the audience.
Match #4
Kamala & Steve Doll vs The Brisco Brothers turn into a no-contest when Kamala turns against Steve Doll in the middle of the match and helps the Briscos destroying Doll. We then see Sir Oliver Humperdink making his way to the ring with Kevin Sullivan and inviting Kamala to follow them....Could Kamala become part of the House of Humperdink???
Bob Caudle: ...if the House of Humperdink recruits Kamala, that means bad news for everyone here in Mid-Atlantic. And what a sinister attack by The Minnesota Wrecking Crew earlier tonight, making their first appearance on MACW TV and it doesn’t seem like they’re gonna stop at anything to destroy their competition. And speaking of competition, here’s one of the newest tag teams here in MACW. Please welcome “Hangman” Bobby Jaggers and Dutch Mantell, the Kansas Jayhawks!
(Bobby Jaggers and Dutch Mantell make their way to the broadcast booth to stand each side of Caudle.)
Bob Caudle: Gentlemen, welcome to Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling.
Bobby Jaggers: Thank you, Bob Caudle. Ya know, we were hanging out in a little town called Holcomb in Kansas minding our own business when we got a call from David’s big brother, asking us to come over to Atlanta and here we are.
Dutch Mantell: By the way, Bob Caudle, have you ever read Truman Capote’s book titled In Cold Blood?
Bob Caudle: Well, yes, but I’m a bit surprised to hear that you’re reading Truman Capote books. I figured you were entertaining yourselves differently....
Dutch Mantell: Are you insinuating that we’re idiots, Bob Caudle?
Bob Caudle: No, not at all --
Dutch Mantell: When it’s about history from our neck of the woods, it’s always fascinating to read. Bobby, why don’t you tell that story about what it’s about?
Bobby Jaggers: Basically, the story is about that time in 1959 when 4 members of a prominent family --- see, Caudle, we can use big words! --- were murdered by 2 escaped convicts under the assumption that the father was hiding a large sum of money in his safe but after tying up and shooting up everyone in the house, all they got was 42 bucks, a portable radio and a pair of binoculars. They got arrested in Vegas, convicted and they were hanged in 1965. Was it really worth it in your opinion, Bob Caudle?
Bob Caudle: Quite frankly, I don’t think so.
Bobby Jaggers: Exactly, well, I think we can make a good analogy about this story and Dutch and I.
Bob Caudle: I fail to understand that analogy...
Dutch Mantell: It’s simple, Bob Caudle. People think that because we’re from Kansas, we’re dumb hicks. No brain and all brawn. They believe that they can easily fool us and outsmart us but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We’re here to prove that we’re the best damn tag team in this territory and we’ll do everything we can to make sure of it.
Bobby Jaggers: But you better not worry, Bob Caudle. We’re not gonna tie up and shoot people around here. We’re not gonna hang people and let them die. But the one thing that will die is their hopes of beating us and thinking they’re better than us. We saw what the Andersons did a few moments ago and they better not think they can do it to us, because they got another thing coming...
(The Jayhawks leave the booth and David Crockett rejoins Bob Caudle at commentary)
David Crockett: That was quite the interesting story, wasn’t it?
Bob Caudle: I don’t know about interesting but it was crystal clear. The Kansas Jayhawks won’t be here to fool around. We’re now ready for our feature bout as “Gorgeous” Gino Hernandez takes on “Cowboy” Bob Orton!
Match #5
“Gorgeous” Gino Hernandez (w/Miss Elizabeth) beat “Cowboy” Bob Orton with a top rope splash. Liz’s demeanor was different than usual, being less stoic and almost more flirty with Gino.
Bob Caudle: ...certainly, a big victory for Gino Hernandez, keeping the momentum going from New Year’s Eve Bash and putting himself in good position to eventually become the Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion. But now, let’s welc----wait, a minute!
(Caudle is interrupted by the Minnesota Wrecking Crew, Ole and Arn Anderson)
Bob Caudle: How appropriate, as we’re about to welcome Jim Crockett to our set, I believe you owe us an explanation about your actions earlier tonight.
Arn Anderson: Bob Caudle, we don’t owe you absolutely nothin’! We are the Andersons, Ole and Arn, the most feared tag team in the entire world. We’re silent but deadly. We came here because we were promised opportunities. And from our standpoint, this means that we’re gonna get the first crack at the Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Championship. So, Jim Crockett, why don’t you make this official, right now?
(Almost on cue, Jim Crockett walks on-set, shaking hands with Bob Caudle and David Crockett.)
Ole Anderson: Now, Jim Crockett, before you go forward, I want you to understand something. I want you to realize what you’ve gotten yourself into by bringing in the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. By doing so, you’re fully aware that we’re gonna maim, we’re gonna cripple and we’ll annihilate everyone you put in front of us. This isn’t something that you gotta take lightly. Because, eventually, you’re gonna run out of bodies to put in front of us. But that’s OK. We can go easy at first on some of those guys to make it worth our while. We understand that the British Bulldogs are locked into that spot by virtue of that contender crown or whatever you call this but it’s only right for you to put us in the opposite spot because we’re gonna give you your money’s worth.
Jim Crockett: Now, Ole and Arn Anderson, I’m certainly grateful that you accepted the offer to come to Atlanta but make no mistake about it, you’ve just arrived here. Beating up people the way you did with Brett Wayne Sawyer earlier today won’t guarantee you anything. Tonight, in Norcross, GA, we will crown our first Mid-Atlantic Tag Team Champions. Because they’re the Contender’s Crownholders, The British Bulldogs will be involved in the match. As for their opponents, I spent the last few days consulting Eddie Gilbert in Tampa because he saw a lot of those talents here in Mid-Atlantic and I trust his instinct. And given their history from the very start, this is why I’ve decided to appoint the Stud Stable as the Bulldogs’ opponents tonight. And furthermore, this match will be a 2 out of 3 Falls, so we can get an undisputed winner.
Arn Anderson: Are you serious, Jim Crockett? You’re gonna stand here in front of Ole and I and you’re gonna tell us that the Stud Stable are more deserving than us? This is a joke and you know it!
Jim Crockett: Like I said, Arn, you haven’t earned anything. But I’ll give Ole or you a chance to do so. In fact, we’ll have our first major event on January 11th at the Omni and if you do well tonight, we can make things happen.
Ole Anderson: You listen to me real good, Crockett, I’m gonna destroy whoever decides to one-up us. You understand me? Anyone!
(At this moment, Rocky “The Best Kernodle” shows up on set to confront the Andersons)
Arn Anderson: Oh, this is getting better. Seriously, Crockett? Rocky Kernodle is the best you can offer?
Rocky Kernodle: No, no, no....not just “Rocky Kernodle”. Rocky “THE BEST Kernodle”, get things right, Arn. And as you can see, since I’m now the only Kernodle remaining in this territory, this just proves my point because my brother Don wouldn’t have cut it. But tonight, in Norcross, GA, Ole, I’m definitely gonna show you why I’m the Best Kernodle.
Ole Anderson: I’d like to see you try, son.
(POW! Kernodle slaps Ole in the face and everyone is taken aback, especially Ole)
Rocky Kernodle: See ya tonight, Ol’ Anderson!
(Arn is trying to contain Ole as they finally walk off the set.)
Jim Crockett: One more thing before I go. Gentlemen, as you mentioned at the beginning of the show, we’re getting Worldwide Wrestling every Sunday night and I want this show to be special as well. This is why I’m proud to announce that we’re gonna crown our first Mid-Atlantic Heavyweight Champion on Worldwide tomorrow. And it’s gonna be Khruscher Khruschev against none other than our newest acquisition....Roddy Piper! Anything goes and there must be a winner!
(As Bob Caudle and David Crockett are trying to re-take control and digest everything that happened, here comes “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly.)
Bob Caudle: Well, we’ve waited the entire show to hear from you about that sneak attack on Mike Graham and I hope you can provide an explanation, sir.
Kevin Kelly: It’s simple as this; Mike Graham, you might’ve won a battle but you’re far from having won the war. I don’t care what you say or what you do going forward but this was a reminder that you’ll always have to watch your back. But, if this is something that would make you feel better, Bob Caudle, I can tell you that it wasn’t my decision to do that.
Bob Caudle: What do you mean, not your decision? Can’t you own up for your actions?
Kevin Kelly: I always own up to what I do. What I meant is that I acted under someone’s advice. I did it at someone’s request.
Bob Caudle: And who would that person be?
Kevin Kelly: Well, look no further than this man right behind me.
(The camera pans behind Kevin Kelly to reveal.....JAMES J. DILLON!)
David Crockett: I cannot believe it, Bob! James J. Dillon here!
(JJ Dillon shakes hands with Kevin Kelly and stands in front of his new protégé.)
James J. Dillon: Let me make things perfectly clear, Bob Caudle. People tend to think that Mr. Magnificent’s attack was personal but Mike Graham fails to realize that it is nothing more than business. Mike, you’ve known me for so long. Back in the good days of your father Eddie in Florida, I’ve always done everything for business. Every man that I signed, every man that I managed, every man that I lead to a championship, it was business. For the past few months, I sat on the sidelines and advised Kevin Kelly the best I could. Everything he did to you for the past 3 months, he did it because James J. Dillon Enterprises Incorporated felt it was the right business move to do. I will tell you this in closing, Bob Caudle. I have my eyes on everything and everyone in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling. There will be a lot of jockeying for positions in the next couple of weeks and you better rest assured that I will do everything I can to make “Mr. Magnificent” the most talked about man in Mid-Atlantic.
(Dillon and Kelly walk away from the set)
Bob Caudle: We’re out of time and we’ll see you next week. Don’t miss Worldwide Wrestling tomorrow night!
