Lutte Internationale TV
Taped at CHLT-TV, Sherbrooke, QC
August 4th, 1984
(The special opening credits for this week features the announcement of the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup and introduces the trophy that will be given to the winner of the tournament on August 29. We then go to the broadcast booth with the trophy standing behind Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier)
Guy Hauray: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this week’s edition of Lutte Internationale. As you can see, it’s a very special week for us since we can officially talk about the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup tournament that will take place in a little over 3 weeks at the Montreal Forum. 32 men representing 8 territories will vie to win this prestigious trophy behind me plus a check of $100,000 that they’re gonna bring back home as well. And Eddie, we have several names to announce over the next few weeks, starting with our representatives.
Édouard Carpentier: Indeed, Guy, and 3 of our 4 representatives will be in action this week. Promoter Frank Valois told us before we went on the air that of course, Jacques & Raymond Rougeau will enter the tournament, along with Frenchy’s Legion’s gatekeeper, George “The Animal” Steele and finally, Rick Martel.
Guy Hauray: Throughout the hour, we will unveil the representatives of 2 other territories, the AWA in Minneapolis as well as CWA in Memphis. We’ve got a loaded hour, featured by our main event as finally, the Rougeaus will get their hands on the Masked Cowboys! So let’s get to the action for our opening match.

Match #1
Doug Somers vs King Tonga (w/Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman)
Like if King Tonga couldn’t be in a fouler mood than he was last week after Sheik Ali cost him his match vs Gilles Poisson, Tonga is in an even worse mood and poor Doug Somers, as good as he is, can’t contain Tonga’s frustration and anger. Even though he can mount a bit of offense, Doug Somers falls prey to King Tonga’s Tongan Death Grip to secure the victory.
Winner: King Tonga
(As King Tonga leaves the ring with Eddy Creatchman, out comes Sherri Martel to the ring to check on Doug Somers. Somers seems to be confused but all seems clear once “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert stands outside the ring. Martel says something to Doug Somers and Somers decides to follow Sherri Martel and Eddie Gilbert outside and back to the locker room.)
Guy Hauray: I wonder what could Sherri have said to Doug Somers for him to follow her & Eddie Gilbert backstage, Eddie.
Édouard Carpentier: I don’t know but it looked like an interesting offer that Somers couldn’t pass up. This man has been searching for momentum ever since he stepped foot in Lutte Internationale but Sherri & Eddie Gilbert could represent his ticket to glory here.
Guy Hauray: Speaking of ticket to glory, Lutte Internationale’s superstars won’t be the only one looking to get some glory at the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup but representatives from the AWA will also be looking to win the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup. We can confirm now that representing the AWA for the tournament will be Ron Garvin, Tito Santana, Don Muraco and the up-and-coming sensation Al Perez!
Édouard Carpentier: What a great opportunity for all 4 men to make a statement. Especially for a kid like Al Perez, who’ll be getting in this tournament with nothing to lose. And we have to think that someone like Tito Santana, a current champion in the AWA, has a good shot at going far in the tournament.
Guy Hauray: And still to come, the Memphis delegation will be announced. But after the break, Carlos Colon and Leo Burke are in action!

Match #2
Carlos Colon vs Leo Burke
Both Carlos Colon and Leo Burke were part of Gino Brito’s exhibition showcase last week but this time, they’re in official singles competition. Colon and his tag partner from the Caribbean Connection, Chicky Starr, have been on a roll lately, but Colon also proves to be an excellent singles wrestler. But in the end, Carlos Colon tries one move too many as Burke counters a Colon attempted suplex and locks in a bearhug on Colon. Colon has no choice but to give up and Burke gets an important win.
Winner: Leo Burke
(After the match, Burke helps Colon back up and shakes hands with him. Burke leaves the ring and as Colon wants to do the same, here comes one half of the International Tag Team Champions, Afa, jumping Colon from behind. Eddy Creatchman isn’t too far behind and he’s directing traffic as Afa is choking the life out of Carlos Colon. Guy & Édouard mention that Chicky Starr isn’t here yet, as he’s scheduled to compete later today in an 8-Men Tag Match, so who will help Colon? It’s at this moment that the International TV Champion Gino Brito runs in for the save. Gino Brito asks for the ring announcer’s microphone)
(Translation : Creatchman, I don’t know if your savage understands French but you do so give him this message right now; if Afa is looking for a fight, he’s got his man. I’m even gonna put my TV title on the line right now against him!)
(It doesn’t take long for Eddy Creatchman to give Brito an answer. He simply nods yes and yells at Afa to get in the ring right now!)
Guy Hauray: How about that, Eddie? We’re gonna have an impromptu International TV Championship match!
Édouard Carpentier: And I wonder what “Dr. D” David Schultz will think about that. This can directly impact his International TV Championship on September 13 at the Forum!
Guy Hauray: Whether he likes it or not, it’s gonna happen right now as referee Adrien Desbois is already in the ring to start the match!
Match #3
International TV Championship
Gino Brito © vs Afa (w/Eddy “The Brain” Creatchman)
Right away, Gino Brito shows a mean streak and charges at one half of the International Tag Team Champions. Brito has control early in the match but it doesn’t take too long before Afa capitalizes on a missed high knee in the corner by Brito to regain the momentum. This proves to be the toughest title defense for Gino Brito yet, to the point where the broadcast team suggests that for the first time since its inception, the International TV Championship might to a TV time limit draw. The second half of the match is completely dominated by Afa and under the tutelage of The Brain outside, Afa is now moments away of adding the International TV Championship to his résumé. Afa sets up Brito with a scoop slam and goes for a second-rope headbutt but Brito dodges and Afa hits the mat. Brito comes back to his senses and mounts a spectacular comeback. The ring announcer indicates the last minute before the time limit expires and both competitors are in scrambling mode. Finally, Gino is able to lock in the Figure Four Leglock on Afa but the bell rings and unfortunately, the time limit expires and Gino Brito retains the championship.
Time limit draw – Gino Brito retains the International TV Championship
(Referee Adrien Desbois hands over the International TV Championship to Gino Brito and he leaves the ring; as Afa who does the same with Eddy Creatchman)
Guy Hauray: Gino Brito benefitting from the championship advantage but as we both know him, Eddie, he certainly wished he could’ve won it fair and square.
Édouard Carpentier: Gino is one tremendously proud competitor, like all Italians and I’m convinced he would’ve liked to prove to David Schultz that he doesn’t need a time limit to retain his championship.
Guy Hauray: More action when we come back.
***COMMERCIAL BREAK + PROMO AD FOR SHERBROOKE LIVE EVENT ON AUGUST 25 & JOHNNY ROUGEAU MEMORIAL CUP ON AUGUST 27-29***
Guy Hauray: Welcome back to Lutte Internationale and before we head to our next match, we will unveil the participants that will represent CWA in the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup. And for the occasion, they will send 2 tag teams but all 4 men are very formatable singles wrestlers.
Édouard Carpentier: Indeed. The Rock N’ Roll Express of Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson and the Dream Team of Austin Idol & Buddy Landell led by Johnny V will show up in Montreal with the intention of bringing the Johnny Rougeau Memorial Cup to promoter Jerry Jarrett. And it’s a very real possibility.
Guy Hauray: We never know what’s gonna happen and it’s anyone’s game. Next week, we will unveil the participants from Mid-Atlantic, USWA and WWF!

Match #4
8-Men Tag Team Match
The Kay Brothers, Billy Robinson & George Steele (w/Frenchy Martin) vs Hercules Ayala, Dino Bravo, Chicky Starr & Armand Rougeau
Guy Hauray & Édouard Carpentier note that this is the first official TV match that involves both Billy Robinson & Dino Bravo at the same time and speculate if this will get out of hand. Billy Robinson does everything to avoid Dino Bravo in this match as Chicky Starr is getting worked on early in the match. But finally, Dino Bravo gets the hot tag and he immediately goes for Billy Robinson and whips him inside the ring. It’s raining fists and the crowd goes crazy as Bravo and Robinson are pummelling each other while their other teammates are trying to get involved to stop the melee. Referee Luigi Macera has no choice but to throw out the match.
No-Contest
(As chaos ensues in the ring, Armand Rougeau is backing away from the action, seeing that officials are getting things under control. But that’s the moment chosen by The Masked Cowboys to sneak in the ring and club Armand in the back with a branding iron! Armand goes down hard and The Masked Cowboys are doing a number on the youngest Rougeau. However, it doesn’t take long for Jacques & Raymond Rougeau to come to the ring and rescue their little brother! Crowd goes nuts as the Cowboys and Rougeaus are now trading fists.)
Guy Hauray: Finally, the Rougeaus couldn’t take any more of this and they’re now getting their hands on the Masked Cowboys.
Édouard Carpentier: The sooner the referee rings the bell, the sooner the Rougeaus will get this over with. And they’ve been waiting long enough!
(Finally, things are back into control and referee Luigi Macera has sent both teams in their respective partners. The bell is ring and we have our main event!)
Main Event
Match #5
The Masked Cowboys vs The Rougeau Brothers
Just like the preceding melee, this match is as chaotic. The Rougeaus are showing a more aggressive attitude in this match and are using their fists more than their scientific attitude. However, the Cowboys use the overload of emotions to their advantage and capitalize on a big mistake by Jacques who misses a dropkick in the middle of the ring. The Cowboys with frequent tags to keep each other fresh and they eventually are smelling victory. Cowboy #1 is setting up Jacques Rougeau for a piledriver but Jacques reverses and back body drops Cowboy #1. Jacques crawls towards his corner and finally tags in Raymond. Raymond is all over the Masked Cowboys and he has turned the tide for his team. Raymond signals for the end and Masked Cowboy #1 comes in to stop the Rougeaus but gets nailed with Raymond’s Savate Kick! Cowboy #1 rolls to the side and Raymond sets up Cowboy #2 and Jacques hits La Bombe Rougeau on Cowboy #2. Jacques covers #2 while Raymond holds off #1 to get the victory.
Winners: The Rougeau Brothers
(The Rougeaus celebrate but victory doesn’t seem to be enough. The Rougeaus tell the crowd that they’re gonna take the masks off now! Much to the crowd’s delight, the Rougeaus restrain the Masked Cowboys, who are still fighting, and after a few seconds, they pull off the masks – IT’S BOB ORTON & DICK SLATER FROM THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION!!!)
Guy Hauray: Eddie, are you seeing what I’m seeing???
Édouard Carpentier: I thought we would never see them back once they left Detroit but they are here! The Masked Cowboys were Bob Orton and Dick Slater all along!
(The Rougeaus stand in shock as Bob Orton and Dick Slater don’t seem defeated at all, for a team who just got beat. Instead, they’re just laughing and pointing at the Rougeaus. One of the premier tag teams in WWF instantly got inside the heads of the territory’s most beloved tag teams. This episode of Lutte Internationale concludes with the Rougeaus staring at the Masked Cowboys’ masks while Orton & Slater are retreating backstage with a big smile on their faces.)
